usuckpoo.. theres a few problems with your argument. First of all, even though I know a substantial amount about cars, looking at cars, etc. I think that a highly trained professional inspector who looks at THOUSANDS of cars a week and is employed TO INSPECT CARS on behalf of his employers is going to know more than you or I. "Cars always look better in pics".. Every single inspection where there is cigarette burns on the seat, a spot of rust, dints, mechanical history.. all photo's are taken and everything is reported. These guys have no reason to lie like an import yard does.. they are not making a huge profit from selling you a dud.. they get paid a set amount to get you the best car for your money. What do you think import yards do? Buy the cars locally? No.. they get them in from Japan and make anywhere from $3,000 to $15,000 per car.. I'd rather keep that money for myself thanks! Second.. I agree, a lot of cars do come out of Japan which have had a haircut. Saying most or all is very extreme. It's highly believable to receive cars up to 10 years old with 60,000km's because most of them drive their cars a couple of km's to work and back every day. Japan is a very different place geographically compared to Australia, mainly due to population reasons. I have a friend who lives in the inner city (not in the suburbs) and he puts about 5,000km's a year on his BMW.. he works in the city, lives in the city.. plays in the city. Most Japanese are like this from my understanding.

What do you get after owning a Skyline???
pentae replied to legend's topic in R Series (R30, R31, R32, R33, R34)
Well to be honest i've never driven or raced an A4, I assumed it would have a similar level of acceleration to the A3 1.8T, which I know is Very quick. -
I'm just curious if there is any way you would have been able to determine the car had rust 'underneath' if you had actually bought the car locally? I would be more concerned buying a car from an import yard that has fixed the car up.. in most cases these guys have to buy the cheapest peice of junk in Japan for close to nothing, then fix it up to make a huge profit margin. At least these guys see the cars in the condition they are in before they are 'tizzed up' as most import yards have a tendancy to do.

Hey Tripharn, I'm in Brisbane and always keen for a cruise. Stay on this board and hang around some more you might like it.
-
I guess what we've really learnt is.. we should make friends with the guys from the Mazda forum, and after this crazy flame war invite them out cruising with us!
-
Alright alright.. Okay fair enough. I chose you as poster boy of the MX-6 crowd the second I saw the three letters GTR enter your posts is all. I'm chilled.
-
Oh and Tripharn? Don't even get me started on what I think of FWD's and 'sports/performance cars' in the same sentance.
-
My car is a 93. I noticed the stock figure is a little more than yours. I have so far beaten every MX-6 I have raced. My car also has 4WS (HICAS) power everything, a/c of course.. It cost me $12k and the muffler, air filter and boost controller all up cost $1500-$2000. So $13.7k. Or theres the S13 CA18DET which you can get as a 1991 for $8k, just take 20kw off the performance figures.. same price as your car, still wins the performance battle.
-
Hey Tripharn, For some reason you keep bringing it down to bang for your buck.. hello? Skylines are newer, better looking (according to most of the population), and more modern cars.. got airbags? Want to compare it to something more your league? Here's something for you to fight for. I drive an S13 SR20DET Silvia. Thats a 2 litre rear-driven turbo monster that would own your ass for the exact same money as your car. Here's some fast facts about what a RWD Nissan in the same price bracket can do to your car: Weight: 1220kg Power: 164kw Torque: 272nm Stock Qtr Mile Time: 14.3 My specs after a few grand of mods: Power: 180kw Torque: 290nm Qtr Mile: 13.4 Now look who's winning the bang for your buck race.. oh right the imported nissan. Sorry mazda fans.

black_tx5: I just thought i'd give you a heads up.. If you stand back and take a look at that post, it would seem to most people reading this thread that you are an immature young p plater who has not graduated from the school play ground yet.

WHOA HOLD THE PHONE! When you where born did your mother make you smoke CRACK? Let's not even bring GTR's into this argument.. your comparing an 80's fwd shitbox with one of the worlds top Spec-A racing car.. Which competes with Ferrari's, Porsches and the world's most exotic top performance cars.. And due to racing mods smokes their ass! First of all the GTR does NOT have 206kw. 206kw is a government handshake with Japanese car manufacturers. You won't know this because last time I checked mazda can't release anything more powerful than that figure. In reality a GTR has closer to 240kw-300kw stock. And mammoth torque, an amazing racing bred traction control system.. YES that means 7000rpm launches and it will dig into tarmac like a startled echidna. (thank my mates at Wheels Magazine for that line). May I also remind you the R32 GTR does a 12-13 second quarter mile time out of the box? Before you put an A/M Exhaust system and all the other shit your car has on it? Your entire ignorance of all these facts blows my mind. I think someone summed it up earlier.. "I love my car but I don't pretend its something its not." Another quote Jay said which I thought summed up this entire lame flame war pretty well: "It's funny that the Skylines seem to be used as a bench mark !"

If you park your car on the street.. they just arrive in their tow truck and tow your car off to a mates workshop and deal with the alarm there.

Blitz: That's a fairly common generalisation. Like most generalisations a lot of the time its true, but for those members who are looking to buy a GTR.. high quality bargains can be found if you are persistent and look hard. I agree with R_thirty_four. I have seen 60k r33 gtr's that even though they had low km's.. you could tell they had been driven as a racing car their entire life. The white one I drove had a stuffed gearbox, the engine was flogged and had laggy and inconsistent boost spool.. it had a big bodykit and all the nismo + apexi GFB's. Load exhaust.. massive BOV's.. I didnt want to pay some idiot for their modifications. The two R33 GTR's i've inspected have both been very close to stock. One even still had the original exhaust system. Low kilometers, very smooth drive.. tidy interiors, no massive gauges or holes in the dash.. and had been regularly serviced, at least since it had landed in Australia. Both had been desperate to sell.. they'd had their cars listed for 40-50 for months with no buyers, only tyre kickers. I know this because I am in the market to buy one quite soon, and have done MUCH tyre kicking. LOL Also i'm sure you could get Greg over at Prestige Motorsport to import one of these cars for you, for his fixed price service fee, at this cost.. and it would be a bloody excellent GTR. You're not paying a broker or middleman, helping a car yard pay the rent and wages.. you just pay a fixed $1000 importing fee. Of course its a long wait until May next year

I think neon's are just like wings, body kits, wheels, gauges, turbo timers, stereo setups, performance addons. They are a way of making your car identifiable to your personality, and seperate your car from the crowd.. even if it's a 91 hyundai excel with an oversized wing and chrome hubcaps. I think guys that drive those cars are great.. the car tells me they are a wanker before i've even met them. It all comes down to personal preference.. anyone critisising people for rice is just as much the attention craving whore as the riceboys themselves.. If we all drove boring stock shitbox commodores, the world would be a very boring place.
-
you should make your avatar 'Mr Tight Arse' !! hahaha paying less than 200 bucks for a blow off valve means your going to get a very poor quality bov. I didnt even know you could find them for under 100 bucks. I would not fit a cheap BOV to a nice, expensive R34. Sorry but it will probably somehow damage your car. Go and buy a high quality second hand BOV if you can't afford a good quality part.

looks like the NEC e606 from 3 Mobile.. just a better one.

Hey Tony, I agree.. keeping any performance car on the road (running costs) can be dear, but I don't really see how a GTR could be all that much more to keep on the road than a GTST.. Assuming you get an oil change every 6000km's and don't go overboard with performance mods, and treat the car with respect.. not dumping at 6000rpm at every set of lights or winding the boost up to ridiculous levels. But the same applies to a GTST Personally with a GTR i'd be less inclined to wind the boost up or do masssive clutch dump's because the GTR in base form is such a powerful drive. I know guys who have Silvias (as well as other cars..) and are constantly getting new clutches, gearboxes, new turbo's after blowing them all up. I've probably done 100,000km's between my two Silvias and never had to replace any of those parts. I drive quickly but smoothly, and respect my car. And yeah.. i do the ocassional launch.. and I rarely get beaten at the lights..but I still have the same clutch ps. this is mechanical repairs.. yes our insurance for these cars stinks.
-
not that i'm aware of.. but turbo timers on manual cars make them easier to roll away and smash into things when the handbrake fails. This has happened to me twice.. my recommendation is just to go easy on your car a few blocks before you get home.

Sounds badass. Rezz, can give us an example of what kind of price point comparison we'll be looking at for the non-mainstream japanese go fast bits?

pentae replied to legend's topic in R Series (R30, R31, R32, R33, R34)
NEVER underestimate how fast those little Audi A3 and A4 1.8T's can go guys. I dare say stock, they will smoke a GTST. -
Not quite the replies you wanted eh? - Spend 5-10% of the value of your car on your alarm.. Get a car alarm that will go off when an intruder enters the 'bubble of space' inside the interior (like a viper alarm).. and/or has remote immobilisation. - If you can't afford full comprehensive insurance get third party property. - Keep your car garaged as often as possible - Don't leave items lying visibly in the car to tempt thieves.. like cd wallets, laptops, walkmans, mp3 players, large amounts of cash on your seat.. tuck it all away before leaving your car unattended., And you minimise your risk substantially.
-
My advice: - try higher quality oil and lubricants - try higher quality petrol (optimax or BP Ultimate) - take it to an IMPORT SPECIALIST for servicing.

You're not looking hard enough. If you look very hard you can find a r33 GTR for as low as $34,000 and an r32 GTR for as low as $25,000. The reason they are coming down is because: a) the R34 GTR has come down in price, pushing the price down. B) the 15 year rule will soon have R32 GTR's coming in for as low as $14k which are pulling down the prices in anticipation c) the car is getting older and less mysterious d) riceboy kids in their GTST's are putting on GTR body kits, badging their car up as a GTR and bringing down the value of GTRs' in general.. the general publics best friends son has a gtr! duh! ps. if you know one of these kids.. do all GTR owners and future GTR owners a favour.. take a baseball bat and beat him down like you are Tony Soprano.

Not to mention turbo models of cars usually have other tweaks that would cost you a fortune to add on.. like suspension and brake upgrades.
