  1. it's a tall order to expect to be able to tell the difference if several things are changed at once, esp when the changes are meant to make the car run smoother, like plugs and air filter, the oil change difference can be dwarfed by them. also, you're going from group IV 8100 to group V 300V after only 3000km ( ? can't remember exactly), both good oils with a lot of performance fans. if you really want to know what everyone else on here is talking about with oil perception, put something really shitty in for 500km and see if you can tell. i recommend magnatec lol.
  2. mines in kg/m2, but yeah they're known for inaccuracy. thanks mad, will try to track a pump down
  3. have you done the run yet maddowse? or did you pass on that idea once you knew what the actuator was set at? i think i'll take my actuator off and see if i can check the pressure it's set at at work, good times lol
  4. legend, thanks mate, appreciate it. now i just have to figure out how to put a known pressure into it to see how accurate it is (it's displaying 12-13 and i have no idea why)
  5. hey guys, where exactly does the boost pressure gauge in the r34 get its pressure from? the manual says its from the circled bit in the pic below, but i unplugged it and the gauge still have a reading. any ideas? thanks
  6. heya, i know this isn't the place to ask but wanted to get some fresh opinions (ie: ones that aren't 7 years old) as a band-aid solution, how does wrapping electrical tape round the coilpacks rate as a temporary fix?
  7. omfg that's intense!!
  8. could a leaking line to or from the carbon canister affect the displayed boost pressure on the stock gauge? cheers
  9. ahh that would be awesome but im up in sydney, sorry mate. i've been putting off the vacuum piping for shear fear of the job hahaha, so many pipes, so many sizes
  10. places like supercheap don't seem to have generic logbooks anymore, but they're available from autobarn
  11. dont shoot me down too bad for this, but what affects quality of front/dump pipes? ps maddowse how intensive is it to replace all the air piping?
  12. oh, and that's with the restrictor plate cutting power down to 2/3, with a bit of practise you can go unrestricted and have the very sticky tyres and make the restricted guys look like billykarts.
  13. lol thanks for the bump. depends on gearing, which depends on track, (and on talent, but most importantly practise) but well over 120km/h at the end of an UP HILL 160m straight at the newcastle track. the straight line speed is awesome, but it's the cornering that tears your face off, its fantastic lol. i really, REALLY miss it but just don't have the time. on a good lap of the 16 corner in less than 1100m twisty newcastle circuit you average 75km/h, which is fast when sitting 2cm above the ground. but the best thing, and i mean the BEST thing, is being able to drive fast, like you want, and tailgate, and speed, and it's all what you're supposed to do. imagine sitting only just above the gound watching the grass go by at 125km/h and holding your foot to the floor while turning into corner 1. haha it's terrifying (and really hard the first time) i love karting, it's real racing, real stuff, but im finishing off a 5 year degree in chem eng and in maths and going into graduate medicine (hopefully) nex year so have to focus on that in the near future.
  14. wiki mate, great for the basics, and i posted those threads above so you'd have more info, this has all been well covered in their last few pages. mx6 has one of the highest non-turbo power to weight ratios for a good price, and with a subtle body kit they actually look pretty good, do a google images search. subaru impreza's, the 2.5's, are actually light and powerful if you get the right generation of rs or rx, but they're expensive. there are also some 90s civics which rev high and pull a good few kw, they're popular for races (cant remember the formula) mx5's are known as the classic roadster, top gear love them. they're small and 2 seat, just like the mr2 (mid engined) both are no doubt heaps of fun. i love track stuff, but ive only done karting (haha selling one if you want some real speed ) but when funds are available and im not at uni i'll prob get into something like mx5/mr2/whatever racing. there are dedicated formulas for mx5's and maybe some others, worth looking up if you're keen. on the awd vs rwd thing, one day you'll be driving down a highway in insane rain and if you're in a rwd you'll be wondering if awd was the way to go. happened to me last week on the syd-to-newcastle highway, was quite scary in my gtt haha. r31's are old and don't have abs and airbags (i drive heaps so im keen on these), the sss pulsar has the amazing sr20 and the ae86 is ridiculously nimble. just make sure you test drive a bunch of cars and you'll know what suits you. if you want big speed tho, its supra or skyline, haven't ever seen someone boasting track times in a na 300zx tho, but maybe i haven't been looking hard enough. the 2 door manual na 300zx has a pretty big power-to-weight ratio good luck. test drive, its the key
  15. ++1 when i flushed my coolant i had so many close calls haha
  16. similar topic covered in http://www.skylinesaustralia.com/forums/In...20#entry5283527
  17. sorry for the simpleton question, but would it be a different situation if it was an r34 gtr?
  18. ahh, yeah probably should have mentioned that it's exactly those noises that we're listening for to determine how an oil is. if you hear loud tappets when you change to a new oil how long will you put up with it? same if your engine literally sounds louder and harsher. i do reckon my car felt slower to accelerate with really shite oil, just from watching the rpm. maybe i was paying more attention cos the engine sounded terrible, but even if there's less than a second in it it's noticeable when ou drive the car a lot. in terms of actual feel, that comes down to confidence with your engine tho, and unless you're an f1 driver it is unlikely your backside will notice the difference of 0.5 seconds between 0 and 60km/h (for example)
  19. bell mouth vs split i was comparing their only main difference: what happens to the exhaust gases when the wastegate opens. the bell mouth will have higher pressure on the exhaust side of the exhaust turbine right? since pressure effects will die off over distance and the split pipe moves that re-entering pressure further away from the exhaust turbine, the pressure on the exhaust side of the exhaust turbine will be lower on a split than a bell mouth right? im pretty sure thats right in theory (tho i am epically tired lol), but would it make any difference to response?
  20. also the gtt can run mega small front tyres and save friction, not sure if its worth much. this thread is insane!!! those power figures are just out of this world haha btw ~150k spent on the car? i think i just won't mod mine lol :'(
  21. ahh you've given me an idea, i might see if i can see what mines set to, means i have to take the bastard off again, hope its easier the second time or my nuckles will never recover! haha just want to add this in, maddowse has been looking at front/dump pipes for several months at least. i'm still learning so much about skylines and cars in general every week and when it comes to brands and prices and what's a waste in money and what's any good it becomes a pretty steep learning curve just a theoretical question: would the split be better for response as it keeps pressure lower (well either lower or the same) after the exhaust turbine which means the pressure difference when you suddenly plant the throttle will be higher and the turbine will spin faster? or is this entirely negligible?
  22. who doesn't? any argument of whether UOA's or feel are a better indicator is irrelevant as we're all just looking for the best oil. btw you have a 170rwkw mx5?! holy crap i bet that goes!!!!
  23. so was that the cause of your boosting mate? if you add the dump/front will you be boosting too much more for the turbo? cheers
  24. or an mx6, tight, fun, quickish (the v6 anyways), comfortable and has a back seat
  25. we all make mistakes mate. before i found these forums i had no idea how exactly to learn about all this stuff, hadn't even done an oil change before haha
