I think you should make the video, you will get more replies that way from people who could help you, sounds like a poor engine build to me.
-
Does not sound good, who built the engine was it you? if a bit more detail would help.
-
Have you had the crank machined and measured up? what size bearings? looks like next time you'll be picking up engine bits off the road it you don,t do a proper rebuild.
-
Looked every were for the camera cable, yes have pics and will try to post today, the car is at Nizpro under going a long list of changers and its a long hike from were I live so I'm eager to compare the two turbos, Simon can then have a good look and hopefully identify them if I can't solve it before hand, after all that I'm going back to what I thought I may have had in the first place, 2860-5s
-
Thanks Discopotato, yer its a bit confusing, I should be picking up the dash 10s next week from the workshop to compare, when he measured the compressor wheel he just said it measures up as a 2871-3 but it wasn't till I got home that I checked the garrett web site and found that although he was correct, the housings were different, Ill take the dash 3s to the workshop next week so we can both have a good look at them and maybe solve what has been a two and a half year mystery for me When I get to the bottom of this Ill post a thread for those who remember, Thanks Guys!

Hi Discopotato and thanks, my understanding is the GT2871-10s are the same turbos as a HKS GTR-S with the only difference being the 71.2mm major Dia opposed to a 71.0 major on the Garrett, and a 0.64 A/R with the option of a 0.86 A/R, I'm no expert with turbos so I don't understand what the compressor trim 48 to 52 is, the Dia on the compressor housing is 52mm which reducers down to accommodate the 49.2mm inducer on the compressor wheel, could it be reasonable to assume that my dash 3s are just the same as the dash-10s with a smaller inducer with a housing to suit the dash 3 compressor wheel, supplied by Garrett at the workshops request? I rang Sydney were I'm sure they came from and the guy wasn't sure what I was talking about, I do remember the guy who supplied them saying that Garrett hate's these types of orders, and also the word custom being used, I just don't want to make a Goose of myself if I move them on down the track.

That's the one, if you compare the housings (click for flange dimensions) you will see they are not the same yet my dash 3s are bolt on's.

Hi Guy's, around a couple of year's ago I purchased a pair of Garrett 350hp 2860 turbos for the R, punching out an 11.8 on a near stock engine at Calder made my night, with my tune shop no longer trading and having been bitten by the bug I had a new engine built, with only a few thousand km on the turbos and an engine being built, the new workshop suggested I have the turbos checked out, he asked me if they were dash 5 or 10s this was all new to me at the time. Having the turbos returned to me fully rebuilt (not even a phone call) he told me they were custom dash 8s (not listed) and that the 10s rated at 400hp would have given me around 40kw more with a full dyno tune. Skip ahead, dash 10s fitted WTF! only 5kw extra, headed to Bayswater for the answer, dash 10s are really GT2871-10, big bastards! rated at 460hp the dash 8s turned out to be GT2871-3, with a Ind 49.2mm and 71.0 Exd on the compressor, almost the same frigging Turbos! What I find odd is the 2871-3 are listed with a different compressor housing the tube type like on the RS' model, my one's bolt straight on like the dash 10s so maybe they are a custom or special order turbo, can anyone shead any light on this. Thanks

Planning A Power Upgrade To R33 Gt-r
Ziller replied to Shinrai's topic in R Series (R30, R31, R32, R33, R34)
When the bug bite's it bite's hard! It would be turbos only for me!, next upgrades, fuel pump, injectors, cams, cam gears, AFM, dumps, clutch, catch can, gearbox, suspension etc = $$$$ + possible shit heap on the road, I would keep it simple for now, enjoy and maybe wait till you do an engine. -
Just a long shot, there may be other business in the street that have some footage, a guy came to our work not long ago asking us to check on a car accident he had at night 3 weeks prior, Bingo!, we burnt him a copy of it, never heard back from the prick thou. Really, you should be able to get it under the freedom of information act, the lawyers sound like duds already, try another one if there is nothing they can do. In the mean time, get on the phone and don't stop until you get results, the lawyers will charge you for everything they can, even go to your local MP for advice, they are a Government department and should be very helpful in advising you on how to go about applying for the footage you need, or a good phone number to start the ball rolling. Good Luck!

The bearings and rod combo wont mean much if the engines not built right, pick the best known engine builder in your state, don't get sucked in to using some shit talking show pony, and do some good RESEARCH on this one as it will make all the difference in the end, it also depends on your expectations with the engine build and budget, the rest should fall in to place, as far as choice goes ill leave that to others.

Just use a little dab of copper coat or never seize paste on your studs if you want to remove them later.

I have a pair off a r33 gtr, nothing wrong with them, PM if interested.

I beam or H beam?, I don't really know I'm not an engine builder, but I do know as a tradesman working in the building industry for many years, by sheer weight and design all the load bearing metal structure's that are built tend to use the H beam design, It;s been done that way for over 100 years, just my 2c

Timing Belt, Question For The Mechanically Minded
Ziller replied to haleja's topic in General Maintenance
I had new Tomei cam gears, Idler bearings and a Gates timing belt installed along with a new N1 water pump installed, before i even picked up the car, they had to replace the idler bearings again, said one was faulty, around 7500kms later the cam gears look worn out, the belt was as stiff as a board and way to tight, you should be able to twist it 90 degrease. Also coolants can play a big role in the life of you water pump, and engine, i have seen corrosion test done on water pumps and some of the more expensive coolants failed the test reducing the pumps flow output's, the wynns brand was by far the best, factory coolants would be my choice. -
Hi moneypit, sorry to hear of your engine failure, it must have pissed you off, so what did you end up doing, rebuild?, was just wondering if you have any pic's of your bearings so I can compare them with my bearings, mine is a pic of a big end bearing with around 2000kms on the engine, I had a check done on the engine at another workshop and this is what was found, the mains are worse, the engine has now been pulled down and is being measured and inspected as we speak, so far things are not looking good, I will know more soon on how this came to be, I cant wait to get the car back on the road for the summer, good luck with your car.

Easy to install, its not like it needs a rebuild, just like buying a new one, not even a scratch!

Bad mouthing, Posting crap on public threads, Good Guy, Defamatory, Board Rules, talk about kick a guy when hes down, isnt this guy just wanting his coilovers since this Nam (PAYING VIC MEMBER) guy who has taken his hard earned money 3 Months ago and still no coilovers, What!, so this Nam couldnt make a simple phone call, not even to tell him if there has been a delay in that 3 Months , GET REAL, Maybe someone should also explain "The Rules" and the expected Code of Conduct to Nam about the not delivery of Paid Goods and that he could also be listed on the forums Bad Traders list if this continues, as for the other side of the story, lets hand it back over to Nam.

No such thing as a 2860-10, I had to explain this to my past tuner and engine builder, it is really a 2871-10 the same as a HKS GTR-S which has as 71mm compressor, which gives you the 2871, some silly bugger has read the box it comes in which is 707160-0010, which is the same number as a garrett 2860, the myth grows!
