  1. Eff, time flies. Finally got around to trying put R31 discs/calipers onto R30 struts. Short story is it doesn't appear to work. First problem is the much deeper grease seal (assembly?) on the hub has a diameter that is too large to pass through the hole in the baffle/backing plate. Took a few photos to compare easy fit over R30 hub but not R31 and the diffferent approach to sealing the hub but they're too big for upload. Anyway easy solution would be to relieve this baffle/backing plate, except for the next problem... The there is not enough clearance between the torque member and the knuckle arm when the brake is used. Cruddy photo below shows it hitting the knuckle arm. Only really allows a few mm of movement. So you could have bigger brakes but not be able to use full pedal pressure because you'd foul your steering. You could of course relieve some of the (what appears to be cast iron) knuckle arm, but not sure what that would do for its strength... Good points are that (without the baffle/backing plate) the disc slots onto the spindle perfectly with the inner and outer bearings lining up perfectly. The caliper bolt spacings are also an exact match (but you'd have use the longer R31 bolts) and the R31 brake lines also graft onto the R30 system perfectly. I would also say this system would have to perform better than the original CL22V calipers as they act over a wider area on the disc and the discs themselves feel quite a bit heavier with more vents so most probably could accumulate more heat and disburse it more easily. So the conversion has a few positives. I know others say they've done it before so I'd love to know what enabled them to complete the conversion. Perhaps there's a really simple thing I'm missing here; bits, brains whatever? If it matters, my R30 is complied/built Sept 84 so is update with sharper-edged bumpers etc. Can't speak to the R31 parts but they appear the same as those I've seen in photos of R31 brake systems.
  2. D, You're right that a simple seal kit may all that's needed but the likelihood is that the pistons are not serviceable, given the age of car and the amount of leaking. Therefore piston will most likely need replacing and if you have a look around, these parts aren't readily available any more; check out PBR site for instance. And, if I'm going to spend a bit on the R30 brakes, it's may actually be more cost effective to put on the more common and, relatively, more abundant R31 parts. Although R31 parts are getting a bit rarer, no matter which way you slice or dice it, they're usually 2/3s the price of R30 parts. As for the interchangeability of parts, a quick internet research suggests that, while piston diameter may be the same, R30 and R31 pistons are sufficiently different for them to have different part codes - which increases the likelihood they're not the same part. However happy for you to tell me they're the same part and completely interchangable! Cheers, baz
  3. Thanks Marc. Might keep it in mind (but I'm sure you'll get a few takers before I make up my mind)! Strangely, I'm interested in making sure the factory 14" steelies fit over the top of whatever I get...
  4. Gain w/ r31 brakes is that you can get parts for the things! Have you done this conversion before? Apart from getting a set of discs, calipers and perhaps bearings, is anything else needed?
  5. Hi, Front brakes on my r30 (Aust delivered L24 engined, prob built Aug 1984) are leaking so a bit of work has to be done to repair them. Seem to remember that people have grafted R31 front brakes onto RMR30 struts. Has anyone done this? How easy is it and are any additional parts needed? Not interested doing the S13 strut/brake upgrade - really just looking to put on some brakes that look reasonably original and where parts are readily available. Grateful for any help! thanks.
  6. You tough bugger. No way i'm working on a car in -2 deg. Good work. Hope to see (and hear) it round the 'berra.
  7. Ha ha, easy fix. Just tightened the hose clamp at the top of the hose where it meets the rail. Previous own said he'd replaced inj's 1 and 2. I guess he didn't tighten up the clamps properly. MAG86, still interested in the R31 replacment though - just for reference.
  8. JH, so slice it length-ways with soldering iron to get it off. Then push new hose on and then the screwed down 'rail' keeps it all together? Have you done this?
  9. Any recommendations on where to source them? In one of the old posts there was a link to www.injectorsonline.com. They seem to sell L24E injectors for about $80 - what do you reckon? Have you heard anything about this mob? Also, I saw in an old post you had some troubles removing the oil pressure sensor. How did you go removing it and presumably replacing it? Was it a tough job?
  10. Guys, Number 2 injector is leaking on my L24E, probably from the hose. What's the recommended fix? A quick search of the forum suggests that RB30 hose/tail are straight swap but there seems to be some uncertainty if RB30 are the correct impedance.
  11. It is definitely an MR30. It was bought by an old guy in '84 who didn't option PS or A/C. It was obviously a bad summer in 87/88 as he went back to Nissan dealer and coughed up about $900 to get factory air installed. I have all the reciepts and the 'Genuine Nissan Air' sticker he never put on the car. Anyway I was also under the assumption all MRs had these features too. Really looking to get the parts (at some point in the near future) and have a go at it myself. Have you replaced these parts yourself? Is it an easy job?
  12. Mag86, the car I bought doesn't have power steering. So was thinking about getting parts needed for conversion (steering box, column, pump, mounts and anything else necessary). Does anyone know whether this is easily achievable or is there some quirk/weirdness - such as lack of mounting points - standing in my way?
  13. Jh, intentions were some type of multithrottle set up, with improvements to chassis to cope i.e. firm up suspension, better front brakes. Except for the intake set, nothing too radical - just something nice, straight and perhaps a bit retro.
  14. Where did you get 'hotplated'?
  15. Mag86, had a look for you at the show and shine by the lake a couple of weekends ago. Hung around the car a couple of times, poked and prodded it to see if you'd turn up, but you must have been busy looking at other cars. you sure do have a nice Skyline, it is as you say immaculate. Good luck with the conversion. Let me know what parts out of the donor car you don't want. Also, what to people think of the parts thread? Some of the posts are a bit old now. Any comments on good places to get R30 parts in 2009?
