ed, The Navtrack is being fitted to my new car - The skyline will be sold soon, and rather than re-fit the QT to the new car - I'm starting from scratch. The New car is a MX83 Cressida that is getting a 2JZ GTE transplant (Twin Turbo 3.0L from the Supra) Yes, definitely an insurance requirement - but more so for my own piece of mind.

My experiences with QuikTrak are varied. I get a call when my car was in my driveway saying the shock sensor is set off when there is thunder or fireworks, but I didn't get a call when it got hailed on ? I get calls when I leave my lights on, and the battery goes flat, thanks guys - always too late - but at least I know to call the NRMA before I get to my car I was enjoying a movie at Warriewood cinemas, my phone was off (as it should be) and when I turn it on, there are two calls from the QRC (QuikTrak response centre) saying they got a shock sensor detection - I run down stairs to find - yes, someone had reveresed into it, no biggie. I call them to say hey, no worries, here I am - my car is fine and the convo went like this Me - Hi, this is Jason, I got a call, my rego is XXX, password is XXX QRC - Yes, that's right, we got a shock sensor trigger Me - Yes, looks like someone bumped into it - there is a little bit of bumper damage - no biggie - thanks for the call QRC - Ummmm, OK.. can you reset your QuikTrak Me - Yep, no worries ( turn off... Turn on...) QRC - OK, when you are ready Me - I just did - I'll do it again (turn off) - OK, off now... QRC - yep, now back on Me (Turn on) - Yep, done QRC - Hmmm, OK, can you do me a favor Me - sure, name it QRC - can you tell me where your car is ? Me - What ?? QRC - Can you tell me where you are at the moment Me - Umm, where the car's been for the last 3 hrs QRC - and where is that exactly Me - In the car park on the cinema - I havn't moved it. QRC - Ohh OK< so you are not at your home at XXXXXXX Me - (Laughing) Err, No, unless I am having a bad dream QRC - Ohh OK, well.... umm, well because I can't actually find your car Me - (still laughing) Thats OK, I'm not pissed - I remember where I parked it QRC - No - you don't understand - I have dispatched a patrol to your house to check on your car....and I... Me - Really - That will be interesting - I bet you he tells you it's not there. I was still laughing at this stage until I was then told that because their could not "see" my car when the sensor was triggered - and they couldn't contact me - they dispatched a security guard to my house, and that I would have to pay $66.00 for the patrol. At this stage they still did not know where my car was and the system was searching for it for about 5 mins. I was parked at Warriewood cinemas, Vuko Place in Warriewood, there is no underground car park as such, but the car was parked "under cover" under one of the awnings of the building. So now - when ever I have to park my car and turn off my phone -I call the QRC and ask if they can "See" my car before I turn my phone off. If they can - No worries and I ask them to tell me - If they can't - and I am not able to change where I park it - I give them detailed instructions as to the EXACT location, so if they have to send a patrol around - at least they will be directed to where my car is / was. Apparently the alarm signal is send via different method than the "tracking" signal - so to these people who have had calls when thier cars is in underground car parks - chances are they can not SEE your car, but they can HEAR it. If they can't get in contact with you - then your car is a sitting duck. - BTW, I have not paid the $66 patrol fee, it's not my fault that they "thought" it was outside my house or in my garage.

I currently have a QuikTrak that I am removing and selling - It is being replaced by a Navtrack. as for which one is better - well, for me - Navtrack is better. I have had a QuikTrack continuously now for about 3 years and my car hasn't been stolen, so maybe it's worked - maybe no one's been interested in stealing it - but carrying around $60,000+ worth of video Cameras and equipment - I didn't want to take the chance. I guess that's the thing about the whole security thing, you only ever know if it's been 100% unsuccessful - anyway - I digress. There are currently 4 Tracking systems currently on the market, and it's up to the individual to do their homework as to the best one for thier application. QuikTrak are tower based and cover Syd, Melb and BNE/GC metro areas only basically - you can see their coverage maps at their website. If you go outside the coverage area, it's just an alarm/immobiliser until the car re-enters coverage. - Expect to pay about $2,000 retail Navtrak New in Australia from the UK, they are the largest telematics company and Tracking company in the UK and plan on becoming number one in Australia too. Their system uses GPS and GSM for coverage. - Also called "Turbo Trak" and sold thru Brant. - Priced at $1950 retail Guardian On paper, the Guardian from Rojone Pty Ltd looks like a Great system - lots of extra features that can be used to make sure if you lend your car to a mate - and they thrash it (too much speed/boost/throttle etc) the system will contact you and tell you. This system uses GPS and GSM also, and is self monitored, so there is no third party monitoring your car. Sadly - it's not 100% insurance approved for this reason - and it's unlikey they will comply. whilst this may sound good ( self monitoring) - imagine if your car gets broken into, and your phone battery is flat, or turned off at the movies or you sleep thru it. The theif gets away and nobody knows about it until you charge the battery/turn the phone on/wake up in the morning/walk out and find your car gone. Smart Track Novatronics have a great system called Smart track and it's similar to the Guardian in the number of extra inputs that can be monitored, and the great thing is that the Smart Track is third party monitored - so it is Insurance approved. But you can also set it up to be self monitored, or both. On paper it looks like the best system (I am yet to be given a demonstration), but it does cost more - nearly $2800

Whilst I am not 100% interested in buying these (I need 17's to clear the brakes I am fitting) I will be constructive in suggesting a way that they can be sold far easier, for the price you want. and to also let the others who are offing rediculous amounts, just how cheaply these can be made to look BRAND NEW. Sand blasting the rims will cost you about $25.00 per rim Powdercoating them will cost you about $35.00 Per rim and you can chose ANY colour you want I know that $60.00 per rim is maybe more than you want to spend, but you will find people will be far more receptive to Silver, Black, Charcoal etc than yellow. These prices are what they quoted me to have more complex 15" rims done about 12 mths ago - so prices may have come up a bit - but shop around, offer cash, tell them that there is no rush, and to take a couple of weeks if they can fit them in next time they are doing rims etc and you will find the prices are a lot more "negotiable" if you are more Flexible Best of luck selling them - -

How come you sit up in the repeater channels ?? (31 to 38) - It's technically illegal, but more so, it pisses others off... Repeater Output - Channels 1 to 8 inclusive, Repeater Input - Channels 31 to 38 inclusive. -------------------------------------------------------------- How do you work through a repeater?. All modern UHF CB transceivers have the function of being able to select duplex on channels 1 to 8. What this does is configure the transceiver to transmit on a channel 30 channels higher in frequency (called the repeater offset), every time you press your microphone button to transmit, but still receive on the channel you have selected. Therein lies the clue to the way repeaters operate - receiving your transmissions on the higher frequency, say in the case of a channel 4 repeater, channel 34, and retransmitting your transmission on the lower frequency, channel 4, so that all transceivers tuned to channel 4 in the footprint of the repeater will hear your transmission, as relayed from the repeater. The downside of repeaters is that they tend to attract the "moronic" element due to their large coverage area. As the Authorities seem little interested to contribute to any policing of the band, it is largely up to the UHF operators to conduct themselves in a proper manner on the air and in doing so set a good example to others. There will always be that rebel element who, when behind the anonymity of a microphone cause trouble. Just remember that to respond to these individuals is to reinforce their very existence. Getting responses back can only increase their satisfaction of what they do. So the moral of the story is DO NOT RESPOND. It is the only weapon the responsible operator has of maintaining some degree of control over the quality of the UHF CB band.

As I said - I thought that may be the case... The recent increase in the targeting of these vehicles for theft (both professionally and opportunistically) means that for insurers to have any hope of making money, they have to reduce the theft risk of the cars. The best (but most expensive) way is to Demand Vehicle tracking systems be fitted otherwise no theft cover. Other ways include not providing (overnight) theft cover if it's parked on the street. Unfortunately it's a sign of the times and the climate of theft that we live in... People just don't take their vehicle security seriously enough.

It's Awesome that these guys are so cheap and willing to insure modified imports. Just a word of warning though from someone in the industry, and I and not trying to rain on the parade or make out they are nasty or anything ( as it certainly sounds like they are not), but the reason the premiums are so expensive at most other companies is because they have had the claims and realised the risk. For a company to price match and beat competitors premiums, it shows that perhaps they have not got their rating stucture 100% correct ( which is a good thing for you guys now) but remember that if they start getting lots and lots of claims from all these new people insuring with them, then they will soon realise that they will have to stop the price matching - and possible put up their premiums. Now don't get all shitty with them if they have to do that - just take advantage of their cheaps rates as they are available. It's all swings and roundabouts when it comes to shopping for the best insurance deal... And please take the security of your car seriously, spend the money and get a decent immobiliser/alarm/tracker - it protects your pride and joy, saves you money in the long run, and helps keep insurance rates down - which again - saves you money.... Anyway - enough from me - just wanted to let you know that you should take advantage while it lasts - I hope they can maintain the cheap rates - the import scene needs it Phil, I think you will find that it may be a condition that they place on all high theft risk vehicles - ie, WRX, 200SX, HSV, EVO etc. By removing (or at least reducing) the chance that they have to pay for the theft of the vehicle, they can afford to quote cheaper rates.

[email protected] The short version is that as you are the third party in the claim, the other parties insurance company company is not legally allowed to pay you until they have approval and payment from their insured. Be very careful about acting on information that you get from some people on here as they are not really that well informed when they suggest some of the things they do.

$2500 on a $25000+ car is pretty cheap for a Yound Driver, with low NCB, sports/performance car that is an import etc. It's not the insurance companies making it hard, its all the drivers crashing them and not taking adequate security measures to stop them being stolen that forces the prices up. My premium is about $500 on a $6,000 R31 Skyline - so as you can see, I still manage to pay about 10% of the car value etc. As for only having Third Party Property - that is a big call to make - I know I certainly wouldn't do it unless I could afford to just replace my car if something ever happened to it. There are lots of examples I could give where you have no claim against anyone to repair / replace your car if it was damaged or stolen if you have no insurance. My preference for a tracker is Navtrak - They cost from $1950 which covers your first year monitoring and installation. I currently have a Quik Trak, but will be pulling that out soon and fitting a Navtrak as they offer greater coverage.

Just to give you an idea - Two brand new G2's have recently sold on ebay for $1350 and $1300 (in australia) with only the single 32Mb card, so $1000 with the extra card is about right.. If I had the money - I would buy another one... but I am currently waiting for my D60 SLR to arrive if you want to see some of the pics taken with a G2 ( mostly resized, for space and d/l speed) check out www.pbase.com/driftking/natcap These were taken by my girlfriend who had never used the camera before, and that was the first rally she had been to. She was told to leave it on "auto" and just try and get the cars / subject in the view finder. I was very impressed at the results considering her skill level and "auto" setting for motorsport.

If you are towing - and want to do it with a Skyline, Then your best bet is an R31 Skyline Silhouette - comes with an LSD as standard as well as the trip computer and more comfortable seats. The List goes GX - (Base Model with Pwr steer std) Executive - (Basically a GX with A/C and Auto std) GXE - better cloth trim, A/C standard Silhouette - "sports" model - alloys, better seats, LSD. Two tone Paint, trip computer, boot lid spoiler etc. TI - Top line - loses the spoiler, two tone paint and LSD in favour of cruise control, power windows and velour trim.

District by district they are moving over to the digital system. D district ( Northern Beaches, North Shore and Ku-Ring-Gai etc) will be the last district to get transferred due to the sheer size of the area and the number of new transmitters/repeater towers required. Some areas are already transferred over - Bankstown/Lakemba etc..

The actual fitting of a turbo timer itself is not illegal The law reads quite funny, but if the police want to be anal - they can (and have) book/ed people. The action of leaving a car parked, whilst not in gear (or Park, for an automatic) and the handbrake firmly applied is the law that is being broken. Obviously a manual Vehicle with the engine running, is not able to be left parked in gear. - hence the "legality issues" I know two people that have been booked for running turbo timers, and strangely enough, one of them was an automatic transmission.

There are many reasons. most companies work on a poinst system - you ask the questions - add up the points and there is the premium.. other reasons may include, 1. The operators may be making mistakes - if the car you want to insure is an import, then it won't be listed in the Dealers Guide, or on their system etc, so they have to look it up manually, If they are not "into" cars - they may not pick the exact correct car (ie, 180SX with 1.8L might be different points to a 180SX with 2.0L, then there are turbo vs Normally asprirated etc 2. The value that they put on the car - eg - there are sum insured brackets - if your car is insured for $14990, it may be a lot cheaper than $15000 because that is there the next bracket starts. for example - their sum insured brackets might look like this $0,000 to $4,999 = 10 pts $5,000 to $9,999 = 15 pts $10,000 to $12,999 = 17 pts $13,000 to $14,999 = 20 pts $15,000 to $17,990 = 24 pts if they asked how much you paid and you said $14,500 then that gets 20 pts, but the book value (market value) might be $15,000 and they use that which gives you 4 points extra. 3. They might have forgotten to include the GST or Fire Service Levy etc With (on average) most companies using about 12 to 15 different rating factors, there is lots of room for error if the exact same information is not entered/looked up. Hope this helps you understand a bit more trust me - it's not easy training "non car enthusists" to understand the many types of cars there are, as well as modifications and what they mean etc. Sometimes errors happen - they are only human after all -
