  1. So much right in that statement. Just because someone makes something and their marketing says you need it - does not mean you buy it. For that size of turbo, which really isn't big, stock cams would still be a pretty damn good choice if you needed to spend money elsewhere like: Brakes / Suspension / Diff / Clutch - starting point of total spend is around 8k. And if you haven't spent money in those 4 areas - you should be before touching the cams because you'll actually get decent benefits of being able to stop better, actually drive around a corner with the added power and/or actually put said power to the ground. All are critically important, far more so than a few kw here/there on a graph.
  2. Except Nistune (and PFC) users are not actually having a problem that a trigger kit to fix anything. It's the higher sampling/resolution ECUs that are like Haltech, Motec, Autronic, Link etc - and it seems like only CERTAIN instances as well (those making BIG power). So probably over 90% of users here, won't require it at all. Glad someone else said what I was going to Read the above and really there is nothing to say you WILL actually have a problem. Don't panic about something that doesn't exist yet. It's very select instances from not a lot of people. For this reason it's more of a reactive fix than a pro-active one due to costs (although costs being reduced here to affordable levels). None the less - 100% props to murrayis for undergoing this project for those that require it. A great initiative indeed. Some of the kits on the market, realistically, are overpriced for what they are if you look at overall costs simply due to there being limited competition. So a bit of that might see a price realignment given there are limited options (around 6-7 separate places are doing them, some won't even re-sell). Keen to see this progress for sure! Keep the updates coming, thread has been an excellent read thus far.
  3. After a 15min hills run mine IT temp was 10-15c above ambient on your standard evening, and that's with the shitty factory sensor that gets a LOT of heat soak and takes a while to cool off... As have many other GT-Rs around the 350-380rwkw marker. Problem is most people go for a 5min drive with a GT-R, see the IT temp hasn't really moved - but that's because it's in a terrible position. You need to give a solid 10-15mins of airflow to get it to the actual reading. Or install an aftermarket one and be surprised.
  4. Second is better than last!
  5. For anything under 350rwkw. Money is far better off being spend on diff, brakes, suspension etc.
  6. It's not 3k a service. Totally depends on what you are getting done, replaced due to wear etc etc.
  7. I dunno about you, but I've gotta regularly pull over in my VF to turn the car on/off again so the whole system starts working again. Car won't idle stable 1 day in every 10 without the same process lol. Utter pile of over-technological junk I tell you. Was bound to happen with a new electrical system but yeah, they've got no answers for it. But I do get what you are saying, and agree as long as you need the refinements it offers. (comparing a PFC to a HQ / Haltech to VF did make me chuckle)
  8. Absolutely. Turbos are the most important thing to choose. They decide everything in a set-up in a stock-ish scenario. You are talking about $1,200 or so. So like I said if you plan on not rebuilding etc for 2 years or more - then change it out when the time comes. I've had both -9, -5s and modified -9s... The -5s around town, hill runs, motorkhana etc as stated, are tedious on a 2.6l. -9s win for a car doing that type of work hands down. -5s come into their own above 120km/h-150km/h+. You just gotta ask yourself how much time are you spending above that? And go from there. Much more research needed. The Garrett -9s and HKS GT-SS are the same turbo, just a different branding. HKS "kit" just comes with everything you need to bolt on, oh and a much higher price tag.
  9. Thread closed. Believe it or not, but since SAU started more than 7 years ago, this topic has been discussed before. Please use the search function in future. 10. So you just get a notice to come for inspection at a later time. There is NO way out of it, stop looking for one, it doesn't exist.
  11. I came... SECOND You lying kent, you told me I missed out.
  12. Ooo yeah... 100+ person event, every year. See everyone there
  13. Yeah it doesn't mean a non-recommendation. For most people the issue won't be there as a run of the mill set-up won't bring up these problems in most cases. Certainly not a common problem with a Haltech, plenty of people around here using them without a problem at all for their setup. Same for all newer ECUs. Just that the issue exists, think about it as part of the choice, if you've got a bit power dealio coming
  14. Of course it is - such is the joy of playing with 20yo motors. But talking crank triggers and so on isn't just talking a simple ECU change, which in itself isn't cheap. It's now going towards a 3-4k+++ adventure. The issue has always been there - but why has it come about? Because of the ECU speed. You didn't see it with the older/slower ones in such a prevalent manner
  15. Just get the -9s. Sell the -9s if you ever decide to go for 400rwkw and get 2530s in 2/3/4 years (or more) and enjoy the -9s for their application for now because realistically 2530s is motor out/rebuild time anyway. So changing turbos isn't a big expense.
  16. If the wheel spec - to - spec comparison is correct, the Garrett wheels are different sizes... So this copy turbo wouldn't perform the same way. Given the smaller wheel etc it would make less power.
  17. Oh yeah, and good to see everyone last night Sorry I couldn't stick around, 14hr day got the better of me in the end and bailed.
  18. Are the overall standings posted anywhere yet? I know I missed out on silverware (poop), but I know a few classes were close! Wanted to know who won what in the end for some shit stirring next week
  19. Think about how many PFCs exist in RBs around the world without problemo in that department due to the speed of the thing itself... None have become damaged or otherwise... If it was the problem would be stupidly well documented for such a popular piece of equipment
  20. Yeah I am too - but are the others non-current versions of IPB? (last 12 months). Or are they vbulletin, phpBB, SMF which are the other top choices? SAU is the only forum I use that is actually IPB, oddly enough.
  21. Perhaps - but that is above my domain in terms of being able to help... I'm sure I could but time/access, that's C's job haha. I've let him know to have a look
  22. Best post in this thread. For me the deciding factor comes down to the need (or not) of auxiliary/extra inputs. AUX for things things like a E85 flex-fuel tune and so on. If you don't plan on that, then there is not a lot of benefit to spending $1500+ on the change over. New ECU & inputs etc - $1800 - $2200 Tuning - $600+ Minus resale of PFC - $600 Leaves around $1500-$1800 depending. IF you wanted E85/Flex (or things like launch control, oil temp/pressure ECU cut out), it is total no brainer - change the ECU 100%. Interestingly my PFC Pro never had that issue. My original PFC did, but it was once every 3-4 months (and I drove daily). Hell my current car, 18 months old, has more coughing/shit bugs
  23. There is no peak to be gained. As much about dyno variance and a tuner putting in a bit more time than anything else.
  24. Yep it's not good. This is the issue with a newer/faster ECU mating to old tech/speed of the CAS however. Using like for like (PFC/CAS), PFC isn't actually seeing said variation... So you aren't actually having a problem with timing.
  25. I'm not sure IPB actively support the latest IE though? There are many people complaining over the internet about IPB boards and compatibility with IE11... SAU is certainly not an isolated instance of these problems.
