Sway Bars And Their Effect On Ride Comfort
nuffsaid replied to nuffsaid's topic in Suspension, braking, tyres and drivetrain
Okay removed the Whiteline 24mm front and 20mm rear sway bar. Obviously some more body roll, and less direct steering feedback. However oddly, there is DRAMATICALLY much more comfort. So when someone says sway bars have next to no affect on comfort, I'd tend to disagree now. On rough roads, there is a significant improvement, and on the smoother ones, its better also. Strangely even on speed humps when the 2 wheels land together, it seems to be a softer hit than with the bars on. Learn something new everyday aye. -

Bilsteins On A R34 Gtt With Stock Springs?
nuffsaid replied to nuffsaid's topic in Suspension, braking, tyres and drivetrain
Thanks Gary Does that mean that the whiteline springs lower the car 24+15mm = 39mm in total? but for a stagea which is different for a GTT? What would be the height difference between 24mm using the lowest circlip, or whiteline on the standard circlip on a R34 GTT? To me, comfortable is the Toyota Camry type ride haha not necessarily one that bounces a couple of times after hitting a bump. It is more something that absorbs the bumps nicely, instead of hitting a small bump and having the car pushed around. Unfortuantely comfort has a very personal interpretation and it seems that for you, comfortable = firm and not boaty. So comfortable to you = uncomfortable to others haha and vice versa of course. I think that just because something is floaty, doesnt mean its uncomfortable. It probably better takes the bad roads that a car that is not floaty, ie. has less shaking and rattling ** What I would ideally like to achieve is a lowered setup, with the same level of comfort as say 20,000km old stock shocks on stock springs. I dont mean for it to get any less "sportier" than the stock feel as I understand that the car is still a sports car, I dont intend to change this. However at the same time, do not want to go much "sportier" either. Just trying to suss out what the options are and whether the Bilsteins be better matched to the stock feel lowered with stock springs / or Whiteline springs? (both achieve a decent height change, but would of course drive very differently?) -

Hi dudes 1) Does anyone know whether the SK Bilstein shocks are the same ones that are delivered from Bilstein Germany? I heard from people that they used to get revalved to SK specs when they arrived from Germany a couple of years back, but now Germany just sends all Bilsteins with SK specs by default to all Aussie suppliers? 2) What would be the difference in ride comfort (only concerned with comfort here) between the 2 options below: - Bilstein shocks with stock springs lowered on the lowest circlip (so I think that makes 24mm lower) - Bilstein shocks with Whiteline/King springs on the normal circlip It seems like stock springs on lowest circlips may run out of travel perhaps and bottom out on big hits hence possibly resulting in a harsher bumpier ride especially since the springs and shocks arent matched. Is this true? or will the Bilsteins effectively control the stock springs? Thanks for your help

Rear Sits Higher Then Front After Lowering
nuffsaid replied to Hargow's topic in Suspension, braking, tyres and drivetrain
I wouldnt rush out and buy them yet, if they should be 350mm front and 340mm rear and yours is 340mm front and 360mm rear then there is def. something wrong there. -

Sway Bars And Their Effect On Ride Comfort
nuffsaid replied to nuffsaid's topic in Suspension, braking, tyres and drivetrain
Sounds good. care to elaborate Roy? how did is the car different on rough roads? So there is a noticeable difference, still decent ride but not quite the "no effect" feeling that most people seem to reiterate -

Thanks Gary Ill switch out the sway bars and report back on the difference. Anyone else have a similar experience before I attempt to put the stockers back on? -
Sway Bars And Their Effect On Ride Comfort
nuffsaid replied to nuffsaid's topic in Suspension, braking, tyres and drivetrain
Cheers for that salad Pretty certain it is not bottoming out as I have also trimmed quite a fair bit off the bump stops but will give that a shot. It's not even really the big hits, but also the small undulations and so forth that feel uncontrolled. Maybe with the higher effective spring rates, the stock shocks just cant control and smooth the rapid movements. -
Sway Bars And Their Effect On Ride Comfort

PS: car is a pure daily that occasionally sees some spirited driving. it is a daily on some crap roads haha no track work planned for this vehicle -
Hi all What effect do larger diameter sway bars have on ride comfort? Now I know that we are all told that they are not supposed to have any effect in the perfect road where it is flat and smooth, and where the bumps occur on each side at the same time, but as you may be aware, most city roads are quite honestly all over the place. You'll get huge bumps and dips that occur only on one side at any point in time. A good quote "if the wheels try to move independently, as with a single-wheel bump, or in opposite directions when the car rolls then the anti-roll bar resists this tendency. Roll is reduced as intended but comfort suffers as the effective spring rate of each wheel is increased in the individual single-wheel bumps, although the combined spring rate of the two wheels is unchanged over joint disturbances" I also feel that the harder poly links may stiffen up things. I am currently using Whiteline 24mm front and 20mm rear sway bars + castor and camber bushes. Springs are reset factory ones, stock shocks. Compared to another R34 GTT with the same springs and shocks but without swaybars/castor/camber bushes, mine seems a little bumpier and uncontrolled. Of course the other car has slightly more roll, but it is much much more like factory plush. (i have gained the granny syndrome and want a nicer riding car now hahaha) So with these sway bars, what is the effective spring rates? Thanks

Come grab em! -
I'm on usually granny mode and get around 12-14 L / 100km usually. Most of the driving is start in the morning, drive 10 minutes, stop. Then start in the evening, 10 mins, stop. So very short trips off a cold engine usually. Over the past few months it has been hitting the 14 area more often than Id like it to. Full exhaust and pod.

where abouts exactly are you dudes meeting?

I'm keen, lets take a quieter section of the carpark and get away from the hoon types.

I thought the same thing. Was told a lower temp thermostat is terrific and makes the car run much better (by seat of pants feel) At the same time, you are probably not making optimal power / fuel efficiency until temps are at a certain level. So by running a lower temp thermo, its going to take you longer to get to the optimal temperature, meaning you'll make less power, drink more fuel, and possibly damaging some part of the engine?
