NZ R33 Long Term Build

So the FPG aircon kit has been ordered and will hopefully be shipped next week. I had previously noted I planned on utilising the PDM/ECU to control the compressor and the aux fan. @Duncan this is what I’m thinking: - install a haltech pressure switch instead of the supplied trinary switch and connect to ECU - run the compressor and fan directly from the PDM, then remove all relays. i already have the ac demand switch wired to the ECU, so then the ECU can control the compressor and fans based on coolant temp/pressure. From what I see in the wiring diagram, the compressor just remains on when ac is on and doesn’t change state with air temp etc (other than pressure change)?? -

I run the FPG hat and it’s awesome. I only crimped mine (DT-P terminals) and I have had no issues. Note that I run my pump ( Walbro 460) direct from the PDM. My understanding is the DT-P style pin can handle 25A. I find the deutsch style pins much nicer to crimp. Converting the fuel level sender to a dt plug was super simple. -
It goes ok, as I never was after huge bass. If I ran it on a separate more powerful monoblock amp it would be better. I’m not sure an under seat sub would be powerful enough there..
-
I’m keen to see how you get on. I just relocated the HICAS ECU for my sound system and would love to remove it completely.
-
No worries. I’ll create a copy tomorrow without my wiring notes on it.

Nice work! there’s a R33 wiring diagram floating round the internets, which is really useful (assuming you don’t already have it). I can send if needed.

The guy I got my keypad mount off also makes these neat little ctek terminal charger mount/holder things for the front fusebox. I had this lying round for ages and finally installed it: funnily enough, I noticed that the car has two 30a ABS fuses (small green ones near terminal), yet this was never an ABS car… maybe they all just have these? I checked the vehicle wiring diagram and couldn’t see any other use for them. Anyone else with a non-ABS R33 have the same? I’ll run the new aircon via the PD16, so I can actually remove most the relays in the box, so I may look to install something a bit smaller/neater in the new year. -
It makes a huge difference. Really makes it feel like a modern car. I haven’t done the roof, so yours will be even better!

Sound deadening is now complete. What a difference this makes! Not just for road/vehicle noise (which is almost non existent) but also for the speakers. I can crank the tunes with the sub and nothing can be heard from the outside and there is not one rattle. The new sounds are great! I will get/borrow an oscilloscope to tune properly, but my amp gains are set to real low, so I don’t foresee an issue. I’m just waiting on my 3d printed door sail panels with integrated tweeters. If they turn out ok, I’ll try get the file for others to print. I have decided I will pull the trigger on a frenchys performance aircon kit (they have just released one for the 33) and their power steering pump kit over the holidays. The PS pump isn’t 100% required, but on the quest of modernising I may as well just do it.. fortunately I ran additional wires in the loom for aircon from the PDM, so I will use that instead of relays. -
Awesome work! The sound deadning makes a huge difference! Have you done your whole back seat and doors too?

Good tip thanks! I know nothing about setting up the amp and speakers, so I have been looking on the youtubes. -

The quest for more comfort / less discomfort continues.. I purchased another big bulk pack of Dynamat, so I have added it to the back seat (double layered), boot lid and the panels either side of the back seat. All that’s left is the roof and under the front seats. the sounds install is coming along nicely. I had to move the HICAS ECU from under the parcel tray to above the right rear shock, as it was just getting in the way of the sub I have a mate that is going to 3d print me some nice new sail panels for the doors, which will incorporate the tweeters at a nice angle to the driver and passenger. im routing all the RCA and speaker cables down the right side of the car to avoid any interference with power cables, as the fuel pump and main PDM cable run down the left side. i have also mounted up the reverse camera as stealth as possible it always seems to be slow going working on the car, with work and family life! But am keen to get this wrapped up and back on the road! -

Final result: I mean, I’m sure it could be better but I’m pretty stoked with the outcome! -

I have been using the car as a bit of a daily the last few weeks, i drop my son and the next door neighbours two boys off to school most mornings, which they love! This got me thinking about how I was going to mount the amp. I was originally thinking under the passenger seat but the boot is a much safer option away from feet. I have been following a page called ‘12v clean wire club ‘ on Facebook, which provided some inspo for some amp racks, so I decided to give it a go. I don’t have any boot trim left (I’m actively looking out for some), so I decided to install on the LHS as close to the battery as possible. Step 1 - Cardboard template: I made sure to leave enough room to still access the jack Step 2 - Transfer template to 18mm MDF The panel is mounted with 3 M6 bolts secured with riv-nuts Step 3 - Wire management I also used a router to round off all sharp edges, ready for some carpet to be glued on. I still need to add all the speaker cable, route the cabling and install the speakers.. but one step closer! It also looks like the sub fits perfectly under the parcel tray but I will need to relocate the HICAS ecu. -

After putting up with my rubbish sounds in the car, with only speakers in the front door I have decided to further take advantage of some sales: basically all kicker speakers (KS), small 8inch tube sub and 5-channel JBL amp. Nothing too crazy. The plan is to mount the sub above fuel pump cover, so it won’t compromise boot space. The amp is quite small, so should be easy to hide away. -

For those who want the keypad ashtray mount. It is now up for sale: https://www.iee.nz/product-page/r33-ashtray-location-2x4-keypad-holder Nice quality, highly recommended. Just remember the keypad is mounted upside down, so when you spend hours trying to find out why the car won’t start, button 1 is now button 8… -

I got a great deal on some dba brake rotors today at 50% off for Black Friday. I went with the slotted rotors. The rotors and pads I have are 10yr old… what’s the go-to with pads these days? @Dose Pipe Sutututu your an intimate fan boy? -

I may have done it wrong but I just set it as a turbocharged vehicle (in the general settings), enabled the map prediction and disabled the old one. Although I could be wrong.. I saw haltech have released this on their support site, which may help: https://support.haltech.com/portal/en/kb/articles/fuel-film-model-map-prediction otherwise our local haltech support @Dose Pipe Sutututu can clarify.. -

I’m not sure but at the same time I don’t expect them to be amazing, as they are a budget coil-over.. I’ll eventually get round to improving them/replacing them one day, they are just not the top of the list at this stage as things like AC is more of a priority… I believe there are a couple of local Australian firms that make quality coilovers MCA and another? What would be a decent recommendation? -

Honestly, the F80 M3 isn’t the comfiest either.. I think it’s because I go from the kodiaq or the Carnival to the 33, which is like going from a couch to sitting on the pointy end of a coke bottle.. I do run white line adjustable sway bars but they are set to the softest.. it’s probably the spring rates, as I’m just running BC golds with the standard springs -

I will definitely go a black bracket. Ideally I’d like a nice moulded 3d printed piece that everything just fits into but that may be rev2, as I don’t have a 3d printer (my mate does). I just wish there were products like an FPR with ethanol content/pressure/temp sensors built in.. -

You would really have to know what your looking for to spot that… you could just remove the white writing? also, every time I drive mine I always end up googling “R33 air suspension”. I have been using it as a daily for the past few weeks, so the thought is there quite frequently lol.
