  1. yeah I forgot to ask about other things to fix/replace whilst the motor is out? Is it wise to use a head gasket to drop the compression a little when rebuilding? or is it only needed on big hp engines?
  2. hahahaha sooo true, mine is a bit like the kid you knew at school who is always away sick... Feel free to whore this thread people... I'm bored and Mondays suck!
  3. no wife, children, or house... just a broken skyline:( I thought I would squish the car bug before I started on the house... at this rate I may never get there...lol
  4. hey guys has anyone got a quote from High Octane on their RB25/30 kits? going to call them anyway just wanted to know if anyone has had any experiences with them or their kits?
  5. on a motor that is already out of the car there is minimal labour costs to install cams (esp. when your getting mates rates) so that just leaves the cost of the cams...approx $1,000+ but a minor turbo upgrade including support systems, fuel etc is going to cost $2,500+ cmon Bass Junky...you know you want to... sooo... cams now, turbo later?
  6. great!...providing the head doesn't require any TLC i can fit a set of these into my budget...yay another question (I'm going to whore my own thread) What power output would justify going for forged pistons? I am going to leave rods standard as I can't forsee ever wanting 300rwkw+ If the pistons are in good shape would you bother changing them to the aftermarket variety...? Thanks for the input guys :jump:
  7. okay so my motor is currently being pulled out to get at the spun big end bearing...doh my question is this, whilst the motor is open and the bottom end is getting a makeover should I upgrade the cams with something like the tomei poncams? Is there sufficient gains to be made with aftermarket cams on a car running the stock turbo? Would the money be better spent elsewhere? Also it is my understanding that I will lose the advantage of the VVT if I upgrade cams? is there a way around this? My mechanic has an opinion on this I just wanted to hear what everyone else has to say... thanks (motor is an RB25DET)
  8. That sucks major ass... glad you are okay, nothing else you could have done so don't beat yourself up over it... (...BTW I am starting a skyline club for people with smashed body work and blown engines, we will have a cruise soon... Just have to get everyone to tow their cars to my house, then we can sit in them, get obscenely drunk and abuse people with cars that run...)
  9. ahh its all good... the beast shall rise again! muhahahaha
  10. thanks Adz, now I'm even more depressed that I have to sell it... :Bang:
  11. sorry guys...its sold... pending payment, delivery etc... I will let you know if the sale falls through thanks, Nick
  12. yeah I've got quotes on dropping a new (wrecker) engine in and pretty much know how much it will cost. I'm not too stressed about that as I know I can have that work done cheaply and reliably and be back on the road relatively quickly. I just want to weigh that up against going for a rebuild and I really haven't got an solid quotes on that to have made a decision yet. It would be a shame to spend $2xxx on putting it back the way it was...when for a couple of extra grand I could have a relatively stock but tough and tourquey 3L motor? I guess the first decision is whether or not to pay to have the engine stripped to see exactly what the damage is? ... or just out with the old... in with the new... thanks for the comments guys...
  13. Don't quote me but I would say it would be ideal for cars running stock or highflowed turbos... For big turbos I would go something larger like the HKS range of coolers, that are like 600 x 300 x 75
  14. Thanks that helps alot... my gf's dad would qualify as an 'old' mechanic lol... maybe time to tow it to his shop... If it does end up being a terminal problem would you go with renowned import specialists and pay the $$$ or go with the family member mechanic who will make the labour costs minimal (is not experienced with modern turbos, though still a good mechanic)?
  15. hmmm... it apparently had the wrong oil filter when it came over from Japan a year ago, so perhaps the damage was already done by the previous owner and it just hung in there long enough for me to break it? I would know if I had starved it of oil because the oil pressure would indicate this? ie driving around with unacceptably low oil pressure. I will definately make sure it is as terminal as suspected before I replace or rebuild but it was diagnosed by 2 very experienced import gurus... so I have been scratching my head... a lot. What is the best method of diagnosis, compression test? leakdown test?
  16. hi guys... I have a suspected, stuffed big end bearing in my RB25DET. I'm keen to rebuild it and from reading this very informative thread I'm convinced that replacing the bottom end with the RB30 is the way to go. What is the best way to tell if the head has sustained any damage without paying $$$ to have the motor stripped down? As I do not have the time or expertise to do the labour myself and would be getting my workshop to do the work how much would I expect the labour to set me back, ballpark (including all the machining of parts etc)? Am I correct in understanding that I will only require the standard RB30DE rods and pistons as my motor is running the stock turbo and I can't see myself wanting to uprgrade over the 250rwkw mark (for the next year or 2 at least) So the only major parts costs will be the RB30 rods, pistons, block + crank and probably a PowerFC to run it? Would the result be a more reliable package than going with a late series 2, low mileage, R33 RB25DET and just dropping it in? Sorry for the boring questions, just my motor gave up on me at stock boost, driving at 50km/h in traffic, lightly modded, and been well looked after by me with little abuse...so I am a little paranoid:/
  17. Is it registered?
  18. so who wants to lend me an engine for the day... I'll give it back...honest;)
  19. no sorry... all as a kit
  20. thanks for clearing that up!
  21. again probably with some modification of the mounts, but I can't say 100%

    Oh dear :/

I would like to see if the head is still okay and then would consider bolting it on to a RB30 bottom end but as for a RB30ET I would much rather spending more and getting an RB25. That way if I decide to sell it I don't have to explain why my R33 has a VL engine...lol I think if I can get hold of a recently rebuilt RB25, that I know has been done well I will start there... (JAPCAB you have PM) Otherwise compare those costs with the cost of a full 3L bottom end rebuild. And lastly tow it to my gf dad's garage (he is a mechanic) get him to drop in a RB25, detail it and sell it. Just seems like a shame to spend $3,500 on it just to sell it

    Oh dear :/

lol... everybody seems to have equally good ideas. Probably shouldn't go to autosalon on the weekend though, I'll end up selling my kidney to put in an RB26... I'm seriously considering getting an RB30 bottom end, but the build time will mean I'm on public transport for a couple of months... I could also just chuck in a new motor and be done in a couple of weeks... but I still like the idea of 3L even without the big bolt on mods...decisions, decisions funny thing was before I knew it was broken I was at a panel beaters and a guy there was offering to buy my car and I just laughed at him...How stupid am I.
