1989 5 Spd. 240SX MOTOR AND MODS: 1990 Silver R32 RB20DET HYBRID FMIC KIT MEGAN RACING 3" CATBACK WALBORO FUEL PUMP (2) 12" VETTE FANS 300ZX FUEL FILTER NEW 300ZX CLUTCH Koyo KA24DET Radiator Hey Guys, I just bought a 1989 240SX (Silvia) w/ RB20DET swap for my little brother. I also own a RB26DETT S14, that maybe some of you have seen. www.underground-motorsports.com These are the current mods listed above, but I am hoping to take his car to about 250rwkw, which I have been told is the max at a stock engine. We don't have any way to get cams, etc here. So, I'd like to push the internals as much as possible, without blowing them. I am working with Innovative Turbo on this car here in the States. They sponsored my RB26 S14, and have recommended this turbo, http://innovativeturbo.com/cgi-bin/htmlos....121082412330414 However, they are going to be building it with a .63 a/r and 360 degree thrust bearings. Could you guys give me an idea on your recommended upgrade path? What sort of times would you guess with these mods? Also, what ECU would you recommend? I've seen Microtech, but I have got varied reviews. Thanks! Chris

Hey, We need help sourcing Garrett turbos for our R33 GTR motor. I have spent the last week trying to get part #'s here in the states, but its a lost cause. Garrett USA doesn't know crap about their own product line. I am looking for bolt-on Garrett turbo's, true boltons. Not the turbo's that only one flange bolts up and the call it a bolton, catch my drift? Any help would be great appreicated GTR owners. I have to order them today! Thanks! Chris
-
Could you confirm that the turbo's you have listed are actually a bolton. The techs I spoke with here in the states say that none of those are boltons for the RB26. We are using the stock manifolds, I would love to have the GT28RS Disco Potato turbo, but they said it wouldn't be a direct bolt-on. They said that we would have to have custom downpies, etc made for it to work. I believe you, I just want to make sure they will work. I am going to be ordering my turbo's on Monday morning. Thanks! Chris

Hi, I'm trying to find out which Garrett turbo's will bolt to the stock manifold and downpipes? I have been told here in the USA that our only option for a bolt-on is a Garrett T28R, non ball-bearing turbo. I have a really hard time believing this. Does anybody have any ideas? I also need part numbers if at all possible, even Australian part numbers will be fine. Thanks for your help! Chris Underground-Motorsports.com

Very cool, McKinney Motorsports, here in the United States, has done three RB26 240's. Two TT's and one running a big single setup. They make the motor mounts, tranny mounts, custome driveshaft, custom downpipe, etc. Their setup puts the motor where the stock motor sits. The shifter sits in its stock location and you wont have to shave the hood. You should check out their stuff if you have time, we are running their products on our car, www.mckinneymotorsports.com Let us know what you run in your car, I believe 11 sec 1/4 is about right. We have heard that there are several RB26 Silvia running in the 11 sec range stock in Japan. Chris Underground

We are using Carrillo Rods, I need to update the page. I'll look into the ARP products, we were planning to use some of the items listed in your list. What customer is in Florida? Are you with Tilbrook Auto and Dyno? They were mentioning a RB30 motor being built for a customer here in the states. Take care! Chris Underground

Hey Guys, Just wanted to show you the latest photos and update on our car. www.underground-motorsports.com We are dropping the motor in next week. What kind of horsepower can we expect on stock turbo's running Apexi PowerFC, AVC-R, 600x300x100 Subzero Intercooler, 850cc injectors, everything else stock. Basically what is the max boost you would want to run on stock turbos safely and what kind of KW, HP would you make? Chris Underground Motorsports

I guess my question is what do you think it would take for the Silvia/240SX to get into the 10's? The skylines do have the AWD advantage, but at the same time, this is a fairly large difference in weight. We have guys here running KA-T (stock 240SX US motor turbocharged) in the 10's, so I know that the RB26DETT motor shouldn't take too much power to make it into these times. I know there are several other factors, but I'm trying to get an idea based on the Silvia platform. Thanks!

I definately agree that traction is going to be our biggest problem. We are running the Apexi N1 Type V Drag Coilovers and have Cusco adjustable control arms, tie rods, etc. We are putting in a 10-point chromoly roll cage and are looking at having the chassis spot-welded. I'm more worried right now with the motor and getting it setup. We've had many shops tell us that a 9 sec RB26 Silvia would be easily attainable. However, I've never seen a 9 sec car that was easily built. Would anyone like to expand on HP numbers we would probably need to hit the 10 sec, 9 sec range? Thanks for your info!

Hey Guys, We are located in the U.S. and are building a 1998 240SX with RB26DETT. We have a ton of work done to the car and motor, so I will attach a link instead of writing it all out for you to read. http://www.underground-motorsports.com/abo...-projectcar.htm My questions are: We are hoping to build a 10 sec. street car, and are wondering whether you'd recommend the single or twin turbo setup on the RB26DETT. Right now we have are trying a prototype Turbo out of Australia that we are planning to run a TT setup with. It features a .7 a/r housing and we are told that they should be good for 400HP each. They are making 420 HP on a SR20DET with just one from what we've been told... Please look over our stats and give us some suggestions. We'd appreciate all the help we can get. Take care! Power FC D-Jetro? How Hard to tune?
underground replied to underground's topic in General Automotive Discussion
None of the Silvia's can be imported as the SR20DET motor does not meet emission standards here in the USA. Motorex has been able to import the Skyline after years of tests, etc. Nobody unfortunately is going to go to the expense of crash testing a $15000 car...I wish they would, it would be my dream car.... -
Hi, We are doing the R33 RB26DETT motor swap into a US Spec 1998 240SX (S14), and we are going with the Apexi Power FC. I know that the D-Jetro uses the MAP sensors, which would be great for the ultimate tuning control, but does anyone have experience with the tuning? I have talked with several shops in the USA who won't tune it unless we convert to a single throttle body setup. Could anybody share their knowledge or recommend a better setup? Thanks! Chris

10 sec. RB26DETT Powered S14 Silviia

Thanks for the info. As for now, I don't want to change out pistons, rods, valve springs, etc. I want to simply do some "bolton" items until I can afford to really do a nice upgrade. My knowledge of cam selection is very minimal, which is why I'm asking for guidance. I have been told by several shops that to make 600whp all I need to change is cams, headgasket, injectors, bigger fuel pump, and bigger turbos. I have everything except for the headgasket and cams. I still don't know whether the .86mm T=1.1 or 1.5 headgasket would be better for our current goals. My second questions is :Would changing out the stock cams (which are 8.9 lift currently I believe) and replacing them with the same lift but higher duration such as a 264/272 be beneficial. Or should I just wait and run the stock cams for now and get high lift cams later. I just don't want to hurt the motor in any way. Your suggestions are appreciated. Chris (P.S.- The car will first appear in the March issue of HCI magazine, unfortunately it's a magazine that isn't sold in Australia. I will try to scan the articles and post them as they appear throughout the 2004 issues. Thanks!) -
10 sec. RB26DETT Powered S14 Silviia

I should have explained what a "sponsorship" actually means. I am partially sponsored, meaning I get products at or near cost. Apexi USA has been very good to us throughout the whole process. Their turbo's are made by IHI and their discounts aren't very deep. I could actually get HKS turbo's cheaper than Apexi turbo's even being sponsored. That was the one part that they told me they couldn't really help me on. The reason we went with the Hybrid Intercooler and turbo's was because they were FREE and they asked that we "test" these turbo's for them. They have not been released to the public yet, and are still in the test stage. I think they are due out later this year. I have only got positive feedback from our customers on their intercoolers, but the turbo's are new to us. Thanks for letting me clear up your questions. I still need answers though on cam selection, etc from the Skyline Pro's, lol! Thanks! Chris -
Hi, We are building our shops project car at the moment, a 98 240SX with RB26DETT Motor. We are using Hybrid's (Australia company) new turbo upgrade for the RB26DETT that they are fixing to release in both Australia and the USA. It's a GT28R .7 a/r housing non-ball bearing turbo that they say is good for 400HP. I saw a dyno where it made 420HP on a SR20DET. We are keeping the twin turbo setup and are trying to figure out what the best upgrades would be to make 600HP reliably. I don't want to go into the internals of the motor any more than I have to. I'm not trying to create a beast, I want a 10 sec. daily driver. Our motor sponsor is Apexi, so every part that we can get from them, we will. My question is the sizing of the headgasket, camshafts, etc. I know you guys are the masters for advice and we just need to figure out what parts are needed to build a reliable motor. Camshafts: I don't want to change the head, so my options from Apexi are 8.9 lift, 260/270/280 duration, any ideas on best duration selection? FMIC: Hybrid Power 600x300x76 (Bar and Plate design) Oil Cooler: Apexi Pro-Max Oil Cooler Headgastet? .86 mm, options are T=1.1, 1.5, 1.8 Injectors: 850cc Sard x6 Clutch: Exedy Twin Plate clutch (NM032SD) Computer: Apexi Power FC D-Jetro w/ commander Boost Controller: Apexi AVC-R Suspension: Apexi N1 Pro System Wheels: FN01R-C 18x8 Front, 18x10 Rear Nitrous: NX Direct Port Kit 120 shot (20x6) Roll Cage: Cusco Chromoly 8 pt. cage+ 2 side bar addons Radiator: Fluidyne Racing Radiator Any other suggestions? Thanks for you guidance, Chris Riggs Underground-Motorsports.com

RB26DETT 240SX, HCI Magazine Project Car
underground posted a topic in General Automotive Discussion
Hi guys, I am with Underground-Motorsports.com, a 240SX/Silvia performance shop in Little Rock, AR USA. We are currently building a 1998 240SX with RB26DETT for HCI Magazine as their 2004 Project Car. The motorset is due to arrive in two weeks and we are trying to get an idea of what mods would best suit the motor to obtain 600rwhp. I am aware that the stock internals can handle alot of power, but I'm curious as to what the first mods to the engine should be. Cams, rods, pistons, etc? From our studies so far, our two biggest challenges are going to be keeping traction and chassis flex. Because there is little information on the RB26DETT motor on American websites, I am hoping you can give us a suggestion of some basic mods we can do to the engine immediately upon arrival. I know that this engine can handle well over 1000+ hp, but I don't think the 240SX will. I will begin posting pics of the swap soon to keep everyone updated on our progress. Any help you can give would be highly appreciated. Chris Riggs Underground-Motorsports.com
