What Have You Done To Your Stagea Lately?
Commsman replied to Hanso's topic in Four Door Family & Wagoneers
So what's the deal with upgraded brakes? Do you guys want to track your cars? I know mine is going to need new new discs sometime as they shudder/vibrate slightly (I've heard that is typical of M35's), but I was thinking of a simple disc replacement, not going to all the effort/cost some of you seem to be heading towards. Yesterday I had to stop suddenly when an idiot decided they weren't going to turn right and pulled back into my lane. I actually locked up a front tyre (maybe both) for an instant before the ABS kicked in & my son reckoned he nearly passed out with the negative G's . Now I could be way off here, but if standard brakes can activate the ABS, then your maximum braking depends on the grip coefficient of your tyres on the road surface. So I think you'd be better off spending money on better tyres. Of course, the standard brakes aren't going to stop like that again & again (eg. on the track) & won't have the nicer feel of some of these upgraded brake packages, but I wonder if it is worth ~ $1.5 - $2K for the feel? Anyway, just my mind pondering the universe & Stagea's brakes. Always an interesting read. Keep up the good work guys. -
Ahh.. but I don't have the gauge so have no indication of what the car thinks it's doing. I agree it is predominantly G force related.

How does that work......? It's just not right. You'll find some others tho. -
I've heard of some guys running lower octane fuel when the other wasn't available and not had any problems. If you car is fairly standard you could probably get away with it, especially if you drive it conservatively whilst using the lower spec fuel. Otherwise you could carry some bottles of octane booster and add those. However, I haven't had any experience with this so don't know how good they are or if any brand is better than another. I had a skyline once that was perfectly happy on regular until I changed the exhaust. Then it just ran rough & farted & carried on unless on premium. The VQ25DET engine is a highly specced engine, much more so than a tractor.

You may be right . I was on an isolated country road last night and so I'm glad the other variety weren't around as I would've attracted some unwanted attention. And that is so unlike me.

That's pretty much I expected from my car. 4WD with grippy tyres should = no wheel spin. Maybe a little in very greasy conditions.... It's been wet here so that is my experience for now. And yes, around a low speed corner it seems very easy, but I got the feeling that my fronts weren't doing a lot & that the rears would just keep on spinning. One time I was way past 3300rpm (closer to redline) and they were still going. Actually, I haven't tried that yet. Last night I was idling thru an inch of water over a road and when I came out the other side the road was dryish (but tyres soaked). I accelerated briskly (but not tromped) and off course the rears let go (this time a straight line BTW). I backed off before the auto changed into 2nd, but they were still spinning well past 5000+ rpm. The thing is the car was still accelerating pretty hard, which it wouldn't do if it was only RWD & they were spinning. So there must be some torque transfer to the fronts, but not enough for my liking (& safety). So I'm still not 100% sure if there is something aftermarket controlling the torque in my car, but it appears that it's not quite normal.

I'm reviving an old thread of mine that I found when searching for info on torque split controllers. I've had most of my dash out a number of times in recent months & not come across anything resembling an aftermarket controller. Since changing the exhaust (& with some km's for the ECU to learn new parameters) the rear tyres are lighting up too easily for what I think a full 4WD system should allow. Is this what others have found and I'm expecting too much from my attessa or should I not be able to do this with just an exhaust change? Was wondering if the torque split controllers sold on E-bay for GTRs and C34's work on M35's? (Might just ask the seller & see if he knows.) As fun as it can be, I really need more front & less rear torque.

Glad to see you found & fixed the problem. Was it a sensor or something that caused the ECU to go into limp mode? Would love to hear the details. Cheers, Leon.

I like all those new goodies Aaron. Nice buy. -
Nice economy there A few forum members have been getting better than 10L/100km on trips recently. I reckon that's pretty darn good all things considered...
-
Wow, yours were frozen in by the sound of it. I got mine out this arvo first go. Took about 10 minutes in all That's good to know. I'll put the bracket back in when I get the hi-flow cat and that will finish off the exhaust system.
-
Cheers Dale, I'll give that a go. I like the idea of having a little more support. If Nissan thought it necessary then who am I to argue?
-
Is there anyone who has replaced the dump pipe concerned that there is nothing supporting the exhaust till the hangers near the rear diff? The factory system has a bracket bolted to the bell housing that goes across to the bottom of the dump pipe, and that isn't used now. Could there be too much load placed on the turbo housing or transferred further up the line? Mine seems very strong but not sure about long term resiliance to vibration etc.

Spotted you again mate. Heading south (homeward bound?) at west Ballina this afternoon. You seem to be everywhere
-
No, not me. I went past you on the LHS shoulder/turning lane in my X-trail towing a trailer. Was getting landscaping supplies from Industrial estate. You were stopped in the very long queue heading into town. I may even have spotted you on friday morning about 8am heading north on the highway near the Macadamia Castle (Knockrow), but didn't get a close look other than a gold M35. That was my first ever M35 spotted in this area, and then again today . We drive a rare breed for around these parts.

This is an indication of just how small our ceramic turbine is (and wastegate too I guess). Here I still have one stud to be removed before reversing the process to put it all back with new bits. I'll take a few more pics later.

Good on ya Josh. Glad you got that sorted. I'll put the replacement back. Cheers, Leon. -
Hey Matty, do you drive a gold M35 with exhaust and Nismo sticker on the back? I saw that one this morning heading into Byron near the industrial estate at maybe 10am.

I'll send you another so you can swap it out to test. Could also be a stray 'hair' of the shield braid touching the centre conductor on one of the aerial coaxs, but will be easier to fault find with another tuner. -

Was it the f-type aerial connector on the new tuner that broke Josh? If it was faulty let me know & I'll send you another one. You should get good reception pretty much all over Brisbane. There may be a few dead spots behind big buildings & hills, but my (very brief) testing there showed great results. -

You'll be fine I'm sure. Just give me a yell if you have any questions. Good luck. -
Haha... next time? I hope there's not a next time. I'm hoping my turbo lasts (cough) for the life of my car so there should be no need to take the dump pipe off again. Mmm, the next level. Can't wait to get it screwed back together & take it for a spin to feel what the 'next level' feels like.

Scotty. I have it out now, but that was my problem. I was a bit short one end on the extensions . In the end I found a couple of short ones to go with my longer one and it just cleared and I wrestled the nuts off. After eye fulls of exhaust crap, cut, crushed & bleeding fingers/knuckles, this job as almost taken the shine off DIY'ing, but not quite . I must say I feel more at home with the electronics.

I'm about to throw my dump pipe right now Lowered the gearbox and all, just can't get to the top bolt nor the one closest to the passenger side. Just no flippin room in there. Having just re-read some of these posts, there's a couple of tricks I haven't tried yet. So after I calm down I'll go back out & have another go. There's a bright & shiny new Blitz NUR Spec Touring system to go in, so pretty keen to get these last nuts off.
