Yes get it checked out straight away before you blow your engine. Also have a bit more of a look around the NSW section as all the workshops hae been mentioned numerous times and we don't need yet another thread about it.

Knowing the story behind this I think that is a nicely restrained post. People can pm either of these people to gauge for themselves what the story is. We don't need a big shitfight here with everyone putting their 2 cents in.

Thinking about it.

It's the other way round.

I wouldn't have thought an exhaust leak would whistle though. More likely to be a ticking sound. Also, a noise on boost is indicative of an intake sound not exhaust as the exhaust side is still flowing when not on boost. I don't think those missing bolts are a problem at all.

R34 - 1st/2nd Gears; Lower Boost Than Other Gears?
Abo Bob replied to SS8_Gohan's topic in Engines & Forced Induction
I think you should get full boost while running stock in first gear but it is by no means a given further down the modification path but that doesn't matter because I think there is something wrong with your car. I would go over every hose and pipe in the intake system and check for things that haven't been tightened up properly. I wouldn't be surprised if one of your hose clamps was not tightened up properly or something like that. -
Bit small. Which exhuast housing are you looking at?

Thanks Liz Also, price for the April 29 day goes up tomorrow (although I think I could squeeze a few people in if you pay by monday). We did this to encourage people to pay early. This could quite possibly be the last time anyone will get to race on the grand prix track at Oran Park as they are pulling it all down soon. -
Ok as per the first post in the thread, the price goes up a few dollars tomorrow (but I could probably squeeze you in if you pay monday). This rule was to get people to pay early. A month to go guys. Those that want to come - get your money in and we'll sort out the rest over the coming weeks.

Far out! If anyone is wanting to know the answers to the questions posed in this thread you would do well to ignore all of the above posts. Please don't take offence people above me. There are a few correct facts but no one has it all right yet. All the skyline turbos (r33 and R34) are ball bearing. They all have ceramic exhaust wheels (except some super rare R34 ones that you and I are unlikely to ever see). This means that increasing the boost too much will delaminate the wheel and spit it into the cat. I did it at 12psi on the track. There is some argument about this but generally 12psi on the street and 10psi on the track is safe on an RB25. That said, it appears that when you put them on RB20's they can safely take more boost. I've heard of people happily running 1 bar for long periods of time. I guess that the heat involved in getting that much boost into an RB20 isn't as much as that involved in an RB25. Series one R33 turbos have steel compressor wheels. Series two R33 and R34 turbos have nylon. The nylon helps the turbo to spool up faster due to a lower mass but I've never heard of one melting because the exhaust wheels always let go first. The R34 turbo does have a bigger exhaust housing which will make it more laggy than an R33 turbo on your RB20 but I would say that the weak exhaust wheel doesn't let you take advantage of the extra exhaust flow so if I owned an Rb20 I'd put an R33 turbo on it. I think that's everything.

Ok I'll try to give as many answers as I can here. BWA - no you are not the only girl going to this track day. There is already 2 booked in with another one or two possibilities. DIF - There's your answer too. Does your boyfriend enjoy wanking more than sex because that's the kind of sttitude he seems to have? Sam - Dan is right in that official timing and more supervision are the main things. On an SAU/RENEW day the newbies, and anyone else who wants to call themselves a newbie for the day, go out in the instructors cars for the first short session then they go out in their own cars with the instructors in the passenger seat. The instructors are the experienced guys like me, Dan - Majanal, Duncan and others who have spent at least a couple of years doing track days. We will show you things like the racing lines and braking distances, what causes oversteer and understeer and how to recognise what your car is telling you in terms of brakes, tyres, heat, etc. The great thing about going with an instructor is learning what your car is and isn't capable of. I remember nearly crapping myself in the passenger seat of Duncan's old pretty much stock GTST thinking there was no way we were going to pull up in time then when we did accusing him of having upgraded the brakes. He replied that they were stock brakes with only Bendix Ultimate pads. The other thing you learn is how and why you will lose it and therefore how to stop it. It's quite usual for the car to go the opposite way to what a beginner would expect and we will explain to you how this happens and what to do in emergency situations. The closer to stock your car is the safer it is to take to the track. Stock brakes and suspension on Skylines are very good. Ok so we've dealt with hitting walls; rule of thumb is - if you are a dickhead and also you ignore everything we tell you, you have a reasonable chance of hitting the wall. If you are a reasonable person, out to have some fast fun and you listen to what we tell you, your chances of hitting a wall are minimal at worst. Right - Tyres. 50% tread wear in one track day is no chance. I got 7 track days and around 10-15,000 km out of my compliance tyres and even then they got stolen or I would have tried for another track day. So yes you can bring your daily tyres and although you will experience accelerated wear, it's no big deal. Mechanical breakages. Generally the more stock you are the better off you will be. While my car was stock I broke nothing. I wore out my stock rotors after about 6 track days though. If you normally run your stock turbo at 12psi on the street, turn it down to 10psi for the track day and consider putting a cheap bottle of octane boost in the tank. $9 insurance. More highly modified cars can have heat issues if they don't have extra cooling devices but you can still turn the boost down or just go out for 4-5 laps then cool down then straight back out. You need about 50% meat left on your brake pads just to be safe. You should bleed your brakes if they haven't been done in a while or ever to your 100% certain knowledge. All you need is two people, a bottle of brake fluid (about $12 super dot 4 will do), a 10mm spanner, an empty dolmio or similar and read up on the forums as to what to do. (BTW you have to take the wheels off one by one to do it.) An oil change afterwards and possibly before if it's been a while. Don't worry too much about the filter if you are doing a couple of quick changes. That should do you. As for safety on the track. We do segregate people according to speed and ability and there are strict rules on overtaking to ensure everyone's safety. Dangerous people will be warned once and then kicked off if they continue their unwanted behaviour. Stay away from S15's and you should be right. You do need a helmet which you can borrow or buy second hand from cash converters or buy new from $150 at a motorbike shop. You need this for drag or anything really so it's worth owning one in the long run. My car has always been a daily driver although I do generally catch the bus to work, it is my only car though. If you follow my, and others, advice, you are unlikely to hurt your car. That's about it for now. Keep the comments coming if you've got something new or not addressed yet. -
Who Likes Track Days? Who's Scared Of 'em? Who Can't Afford It?
Abo Bob replied to Abo Bob's topic in New South Wales
No offence taken sam. One of the reasons why our days are relatively expensive is that we generally have them on a weekend to suit the availability of most people and the tracks and every one else charge more for weekends because they are more popular and they can get away with it. I'm not sure what the SAU Wakefield day will cost but it will definitely be more than $90. We do have a skidpan day/motorkhana in the pipelines atm too. In all the track days I've been to I've never seen a Skyline crash. S15's and wrx's crash - not us. :D It certainly is possible for us to help out people who are scared of breaking something or crashing. It's just not an issue once you understand what goes on and what to do. In this regard I will write up something for people soon to update what I wrote after my first two track days. But as for cost - we do our best and there's not too much else we can do unfortunately. All I can say is that it definitely is a better run day with us than a Wakefield no speed limit day but it just cost a lot more - especially for the other tracks like Oran Park and Eastern Creek. -
I know this is not constructive but nice write up mate. This is what I used to get those two bolts on the top of the bell housing. The long extension bar cost me $10 from a cheapo tools place. That's a universal joint bit in between the extension bars and the socket. I think there would be 4 bolts holding the torque converter on rather than 3 unless it's different between models but I'm sure people will figure that out when they get there.

Turbo 'whistling' Under High Boost On 1999 R34
Abo Bob replied to Haxorz's topic in Engines & Forced Induction
My R34 stock turbo whistled from the day I got it. Other people also said that most others don't do it but mine was fine. I'm sure it had nothing to do with was made it blow in the end so I wouldn't worry. -
Hi guys, I'm just wondering if we as a club are doing anything wrong. I mean, we've organised a track day (see my sig for details) but we haven't exactly been bowled over by payments. Now I know about 5 or 6 people I trust have told me they are definites but I would still have expected about another 10-15 people paying and entering by now. So what I want to know is why? Why haven't you entered yet? Why are you not interested? That sort of thing. Be completely honest please because we as a club are trying to put the events on that you want to go to at a price that's affordable. As far as price is concerned we try our absolute best to make it as cheap as we can. So talk to me. Lots of track talk in SAU land but not so many people putting their money and their car where their mouth is. Thanks. Adam.
