Pga-sa Interclub Dyno Day #3 - 14th March 2009!
whatsisname replied to car_fanatica's topic in South Australia
They are well deserved, Dan. Short of a major commitment elsewhere I will be there next year - I might not compete but I will certainly be keen to attend. I spoke to Anthony for quite a bit at the end of the day and there is no doubt his 20B GT42 powered Mazda has a lot more in it, a lot more! Well into the 400+rwkw region on BP98 and 500rwkw should be achieveable on E85. His car has 8 sec' potential. -

Krishy, thanks for the kind words. If you can cope with limited access to E85 currently (only two service stations that stock E85 on pump at the moment) then I couldn't recommend it more highly. -

Okay, I finally have a spare moment to write a few words. Firstly, I'd like to make amends for my shocking attempt at a 'speech' during the awards - I'll blame 3hrs sleep and fatigue for sounding like a mumbling idiot. I’d like to pass on my congratulations to all the organisers and helpers on the day, it was a first class event and the effort involved was highly evident. Daniel (BLU555) and the other PGA members – apologies for not listing your names - I would be very proud of your achievements, it is not easy running an event to this standard. Brett and the staff at Graham West Workshops, thank you for your patience and professionalism. It was my first visit to GWW and it is now obvious that the positive reports I had heard were true. Finally to all the sponsors of the event, well done on supporting an event of this nature - particularly under the current economic climate. A huge thanks to Lee and… Michelle? , Luke (Lee’s brother), Shaun (this man can change a wheel just as well as he can detail a car for a show in situ’) and the rest of the SAU attendees that lent a hand when and where required. Without Lee, I wouldn’t have been able to run the car to it potential – mate I owe you big time! It was also good to see a few familiar faces, Pete (SLED), Krishy, Andrew (Nightcrawler) and so on. Lee, it sure was those rears of yours mate. How much of a shit do I feel? You lend me your rears, put in a big effort to provide the tools and muscle to help swap them over whilst your very patient other half stands guard, I then tell you ‘yep mate, you’ve got this in the bag’, only to pip you by a handful of kilowatts… using your own rear wheels and tyres! Give me a few more hours and I’ll be sending you a PM. TheRogue, sorry I didn’t catch your name (Joel? As in ‘the’ Joel), thanks for the kind words mate. E85 indeed Daniel (BLU555) thanks mate. I’ll shoot you a PM tomorrow sometime when I get a chance. Pete, thanks mate. To be honest, it’s not that much of a handful when I drive it like a Nanna 99.9% of the time I’m in the drivers seat. That kind of power is really only for track use. Marko, due to my complete lack of know how, could I trouble you to e-mail me copies of the video from both dyno runs? I can PM you my e-mail address. Thanks mate! Gav/Pete, drag orientated semi-slicks (MT, Hoosiers, BFG etc.) will not get grip on the knurled metal dyno rollers, in fact if you have enough power they will literally start shredding to pieces once torque starts to build. My initial run saw pieces of rubber tearing off the MT’s. The car reached just under 250rwkw @ 129km/h in 4th (~4,500-5000rpm) whilst rubber was flying off the rears and then the 10A injector fuse decided the Siemens injectors were drawing too much current and blew, which shut the car down. The extremely soft tread compound of a top of the line drag radial will be torn to pieces by the knurled metal roller and the soft sidewall deforms and robs power, even if you don’t lose traction. A hard sidewall semi-comp’ on the other hand is fine – my RE540S rears were fine when I ran those on the rear, useless for getting grip on the strip though. Oh and just quickly, Lee, I'll post up my dyno sheet as soon as I get a chance mate. Last but not least... my wife and I and some friends went and watched Eric Bana's Love The Beast a few hours after the dyno day had wrapped up. For what it is it is an excellent film, and a perfect way to end the day. Cheers, Matt -

Guilt-toy Now Running On E85 !
whatsisname replied to Guilt-Toy's topic in Engines & Forced Induction
Not bad for stock cams and stock manifolds! Yep, I'm good to go for the 14th. I'll have to get my entry in. However, there's one slight issue, one that may or may not be a show-stopper for me, my rear rubber. MT ET's don't handle knurled dyno rollers well at all, and I'm not all that keen on stuffing around swapping rears for the sake of a quick dyno shootout. I'll have a chat to Shaun and see if he reckons they can give an accurate reading for one or two quick runs. We had to borrow a set of 'normal' rubber for the recent tune work. I'll be at the dyno day no matter what, it's just a matter of will I or won't I run the '33. -

Yet another outstanding result, Lee. Congrat's. And to think, only a few months ago it was making almost 100rwkw less It looks like the 3037 (0.68) is starting to reach the limit with your current set-up (cams/head etc) given the mild 9-10rwkw gain from a 3-4psi increase in boost. But with near enough to 350rwkw, and very good response, you couldn't ask for much more. Time to upgrade those cams now. -

G'day Matt! Welcome to the forums. I've been meaning to get back to you about the rest of the R33 engine bay parts (fuse box cover, dipstick, ABS cover etc) Will call you in a few days. Once it's all done I'll stick a bunch of photos up on here and get the ball rolling Good luck with the dirt circuit racing venture, and the new car. Any info' on when we can go and watch some of this kind of racing? -
Please place your request in the Wanted To Buy section.

Guilt-toy Now Running On E85 !
whatsisname replied to Guilt-Toy's topic in Engines & Forced Induction
Mate, if I have traction issues in 3rd, with the A/C on full blast, on a 37-39'c day, running 275 MT Radials, about -0.3 rear camber, and with less grunt, you've got no chance ha-ha. Cool temp's are going to be interesting. It's not looking all that good at the moment. How long have I got before they close the entries? Knowing my luck I won't be free... and 3 to 4 days out the schedule will change and I will be free! Congrat's Hamish. Nice result! Nice and responsive too. -

Can't fault that logic, GT. Full credit to you for doing the hands-on and giving the rest of us very valuable feed back. -
Chalk up one more spotted for Pete's old beast. The new owner either works for the Aust' Defence Force, or is a serving member - I spotted it parked on base near work.
-
Yep, that's about what I would expect for those modifications on the Boostworx dyno. You have almost doubled the stock boost level (7psi + 6psi) completely opened up the restrictive exhaust and cooled the inlet air charge. I would guess that your '33 GTS25t is a series 2? The series 2 ECU responds quite well to basic mod's.
-
A standard R33 RB25DET wouldn't even get close to 170rwkw on Shaun's current DD dyno. Not a hope in hell. When I state standard, I am talking about stock exhaust, stock 7psi boost, stock everything. Even the old Boostworx dyno wouldn't have recorded 170rwkw for completely standard '33. The old dyno was about 15rwkw high - so a standard RB25DET '33 would record ~145rwkw. On the current Boostworx DD dyno a standard R33 RB25DET will record ~130-135rwkw, much more than this and you have a freak or it is not standard.

This make me even happier that I opted for the overkill 910cc Siemens - not that my current exhaust housing/wheel combo' will support 380-400rwkw, but we all know how things usually go Lee, good luck mate. Stick a top of the range LSD under the rear, get some ET Street Radials on there, dial out as much negative camber on the rear as you can... and it will still struggle. Traction in 4th should be good though. -
Guilt-toy Now Running On E85 !
whatsisname replied to Guilt-Toy's topic in Engines & Forced Induction
I probably should add that my '33 has a dual core 53mm alloy radiator, 16" thermo' fan and a second smaller fan, a header tank, and one or two other cooling aids. -
Yep, spot on, Steve. A completely standard R33 GTS25t (and I would assume RS4 in RWD) on the factory setting of 7 psi boost will return 125-135rwkw on DD dyno. At 9-10 psi with basic supporting modifications (exhaust and filter) that figure should increase to 145-150rwkw. I have a DD dyno sheet from back in 1999, at the time my '33 had a pod filter, cat-back Trust exhaust, and was running 10psi via a bleed valve. From memory it recorded 148rwkw.

I've know Shaun since pre-Boostworx days (well before) and I can't speak more highly of him. The business grew strongly in those early days from word of mouth alone. The Boostworx crew is: Shaun - owner and tuning guru Troy Adam - apprentice Andrew Ha-ha, apologies Nick, it was I that killed the print head - a week or so back. It was already a bit dodgy, but after scrolling though heaps of dyno log data and printing off a few sheets I managed to kill it completely. From my experience with completely standard RB25DET R33 engines the average power figure on a Dyno Dynamics dyno is 130-135rwkw.

I'd love to! If we had a genuine Adelaide based drag strip. I think DWTuning should build a drag/test facility (and I'm not talking about a place to dress up in womens clothing ) I enjoy corners, but I'd love to be able to go in a straight line again. Any news on re-mapping the Golf TSI/GT yet mate?

Guilt-toy Now Running On E85 !

Quick bit of info' from me; I always knew that running high ethanol content (and certainly methanol) fuels reduced engine temp's / coolant temp's etc. But I guess until you see it for your own eyes it doesn't sink in. I just did a trip to the motor trimmer (40km drive) which is the first decent drive I've done since the switch to E85, and today is a mild 26'c humid yet sunny Adelaide day. My coolant temperature pre-E85 would normally sit at 80-82'c with a peak of 88-90'c A/C on at full blast under these conditions. Today... 72'-74'c and peaking at 80-82'c with A/C on and sitting in traffic. A very impressive by-product of running E85! -
Speaking of missing the point, Fishpaste… Your last paragraph is exactly what I've have been saying on this very forum for the last four years. Unfortunately attempting to get a fairer system by choosing a starting point of two Port Adelaide Police Station officers (at the lower end of the rank structure) is like trying to fell a tree with a nail file. They are merely officers at the coalface with a job to do and within the laws and structures that are in place in this state. Want a fairer system? Then start lobbying the South Australian government until they cannot take it any more and do something about it. Write a letter a day for then next 5 years, address it directly to the SA Minister for Transport etc. (ala Shawshank Redemption style)You'll have a better chance of seeing that fairer system. As far as what are and aren't legal modifications, well, in this state you have ADRs and then you have whatever Regency Park decide. Show me the hard and fast legal vehicle modification laws applicable for South Australian registered vehicles and then try and compare them to ADRs... I bet you'll be surprised.

The funniest thing about the whole SAPOL/defect issue is the fact that there are Adelaide (and surrounding areas) based police officers with illegally modified cars themselves – this isn't a stab in dark, it's a cold hard fact. I doubt the above-mentioned modified car owners are out there attempting to liaise with the traffic enforcement branch about ways to 'do the right thing'. Instead, they go about their private business and remain as low key as they can, because they too know how 'it' works, and these guys/girls have avenues open to them for clearing potential defects that most other modified car owners could only dream of. Trying to change the status quo from this angle is largely futile; however, I can certainly appreciate the effort and the determination to be a positive influence. The key to any change is tackling it at the crux of the issue. The entire light vehicle modification system in South Australia is in need of an overhaul. End of story. Is this likely to happen? Not unless someone wants to run as an independent candidate in the next state election – and you had better start working on some damn good policies. The saddest thing of all is the fact that we/us are the ones to blame for the ever-increasing police scrutiny - those that lack the common sense to exercise judgment on the roads, those that do stupid things in the wrong place and at the wrong time. Go back no more than 5-6 years ago and it wasn't uncommon to have a 15-20 car SAU/LS1.com combined cruise (hell even a 40-50 car cruise) that could traverse the city and surrounding suburbs without a single hassle at all. Why have things changed so radically? There are more imports out there on the roads (and more late model LS1 Commodores for that matter) and the cars are cheaper and far more readily available to those that lack the common sense and maturity to control themselves.

Whats The Difference Between The Best Oils
whatsisname replied to =premo='s topic in Engines & Forced Induction
I have used Motul 300V 'Competition' 15W50 and 'Chrono' 10W40 and would gladly recommend the 300V line to anyone looking for a quality engine oil. I used nothing but the above two oils from 1998 through until 2008. I do regular 5,000kms changes and when the engine was stripped down for a rebuild in 2003 (ring land failure) apart from the detonation damage the engine was in excellent condition! It had done a genuine (confirmed) 50,000km. Late last year I decided to switch to Royal Purple's new XPR 10W40 http://www.royalpurple.com/xpr-racing-oil-rh.html No particular reason, other than it was available for a reasonable price through an online trader and I had heard a lot of positive feed back from other users.
