  1. Tim, Yeah... in a roundabout way that's who I mean mate. Cheers GM. I think we share some common ground on this topic. Still on the topic of road rules and there enforcement, notice that 50km/h speed zones are about to be extended across Adelaide. Naturally the statistics have shown the 50kay zones are working.... they're pulling in the bucks big time!!!
  2. Oh I've heeded it, and it's not falling on deaf ears at all. I completely understand the points you've made. I too can see it from the others perspective, as I am in the RAAF. You'd be surprised just how many enlisted Defence Force personnel there is on SAU. I think in the big scheme of things we do tend to "shoot the messenger", and quite a number of them probably deserve it! But yes there are those that don't. The policy makers and those that push the police to enforce defect "blitzes" (and choose the focus of said blitzes) are the ones that I have zero respect for. Police Officers that get on a power trip and take it upon themselves to “rid our roads of these young smart arse idiots and their cars” aren’t much better.
  3. Yeah I noticed the weather shaping up nicely Henry.
  4. Just think, you could potentially get defected for having a defect sticker obscuring your forward vision
  5. No damn it, I'm not finished yet!!! ADR's are there to give guidance as to what can and can't be done legally to a vehicle on "ALL" Australian roads, yes? So why then is it that one state can have one interpretation of these rules (such as QLD's relaxed policy) and yet other states differ markedly? Does this mean that QLD has higher levels of road related accidents due to massive amounts of “potentially” defective vehicles? Not bloody likely! But I'll bet they don't rely on as large a percentage of budget income from defects either. Right, I’m driving home now……GRRRRRRRR………….repeat to self - “don’t drive angry”
  6. I daresay having a flare installed in your car would be a defectable offence
  7. Erica, what you've said is of course completely correct, if we don't play by the rules (ADR's) then we can expect to get defected, no argument there. But if the law enforcers want to they can play those rules at hard as hell... and they can quite literally defect almost ANY car on the road in SA. Search the fine print hard enough and there will always be something to defect. Even if it isn't a defectable item, so what, the onus is on YOU, the owner, to prove it IS legal. Pray you never piss off the wrong police officer, because they can, have and WILL make your days driving the Cheeky mobile living hell. I've seen it happen in NSW. Sure you can put it back to stock as a rock, but as I've said above, it won't stop you being defected for a "suspected" non-compliance to ADR's. As for police stereotyping of imported car owners/drivers.... "Don’t blame the gun, it's the bastard who pulled the trigger!" Hence my comment about police discretion. I don't disagree with the need to police vehicle compliance on South Australian roads. What I DO disagree with is the obvious targeting of certain vehicle and owner types. Why is there such as large Defect Station presence on Adelaide roads? Why don't we have MUCH harsher penalties for dangerous driving on the states roads? This latter point would help stamp out a large amount of the idiot behaviour that has given modified vehicle owners a bad name in the first place. Why don't the police actively work with the community, workshops and the Transport Authority to improve the standard of cars on the states road? I'll tell you why... because NONE of these points will generate revenue over the long run, it will only cost it! Make the general public "think" you're doing something about a problem and then work out the cheapest way to do it. Lots of defected cars ='s cash and the average Joe thinking the roads will be a safer place - complete rubbish!
  8. WTF!? Dean there must be two of 'em!!! Mine was safely tucked away in the garage at that time, well I sure hope it was!? I didn't even get home in the Sigma till 7pm. No one else (and I mean NO ONE!) has a spare key. Besides I wouldn't hammer it on Main North, I'm a good boy
  9. Found an interesting little read on drag racing calculators here - http://www.stealth316.com/2-calc-hp-et-mph.htm Note the predicted ET and TS vs. the actuals!
  10. Looks like you've got yourself a factory ECU that likes to play the game! Very lucky! My factory ECU headed for sub 10's A/FR territory as soon as any additional AFM voltage was recorded (i.e more boost, cam adjustments and so on...)
  11. Lach, I had ~1.35bar on board for the power run above. It was limited by the leaking BOV , even after we tightened the crap out of it. My tune isn't too aggressive, total timing is only 2 degrees above stock. EDIT: Oops... forgot to add... I couldn't agree more with Freebaggin re the Microtech LT12. I'm absolutely amazed at how well it runs my car! I love the LT12 and the options it gives me. To be totally honest I was expect it to be a POS given the bagging people seem to give Microtech, boy was I wrong! Maybe I'm a tad selfish, but I hope people continue to bag Microtech, that way they'll keep the prices down and work hard to make as many low cost features and upgrades as possible
  12. Garage Menace, you wouldn't happen to be a police officer or have friends/family who are by any chance? I agree in part to what a lot of people have said above. Including you GM. But what I don't understand is... if police manning is at a level where prompt follow-up to "minor offences" is not possible (in most cases) then why is it that there's always plenty of time and spare officers to man defect stations all around the streets of Adelaide? To further justify my point… why is it that at the vast number of defect stations I see in my travels around Adelaide there are always imported and/or modified cars being given a complete going over. Yet in the time spent to do this numerous, old, obviously unroadworthy and down right dangerous clunkers pass right on by without so much as a second glance!? Isn’t it these vehicles that are the ones that should be targeted? I’m not saying that import and/or modified vehicle owners should be totally ignored, but how about a bit of discretion on the part of the police? My guess is… that defecting modified vehicles generates faaar too much revenue to reduce the time, money and officer numbers currently dedicated to that task.
  13. Henry/Bob, I'll see you lads there then!
  14. Total hijack here - but BelGarion I love your sig' mate. Bloody classic!
  15. I'll probably go for an absolute max of 22psi (~1.5bar) Last meet I used ~19-20psi (~1.3-1.35bar) Boost cut is now set at 25psi (1.7bar) I'm sure I could go even higher, but the internal MAP sensor of the LT12 Microtech isn't up to the task. I'd need to upgrade to a 3bar external MAP sensor, and I'm not keen to run 25psi (or over) anyway. Can't wait to see you and Joel out there running quick times mate! I'm pretty much ready to go back to spectating now
  16. I 99.9% sure I'll be running again.
  17. 6. Cam gears - the standard NVCS "inlet" gear can be adjusted anyway. I'm sure a few people have already had a look at this dyno sheet but below is the back-to-back comparison (same dyno, same day) btw a GT3040 (internal gate) a HKS GT2835ProS, HKS GT3037S and my bitza T3/T4: Freebaggin - GT3040 Grepin - HKS GT2835ProS whatsisname - T3/T4 Steve - HKS 3037S
  18. Does having your tuner/workshop owner of choice tuning your car @ 11.30pm - 1am on a Friday night/Sat morning count? Good to see John and the UAS crew looking after SAU members. Well done John!
  19. rbs13, Yep mate my turbo uses a VL style T3 exh housing, I think Freebaggin's uses the same VL T3 style housing too? I'd say my turbo combo wouldn't be too bad on an RB20DET. Naturally it'd be laggier. You'd certainly have boost by 3500-4000 though. On the dyno, thanks to a leaking BOV, I've "only" used ~1.35bar. I have ran as high as 1.7bar (not record any dyno numbers on this much boost though) The latest drag passes were using 1.35-1.38bar 4door, No mate my turbo uses the VLT T3 ext housing (as per above) with a Garrett core and T04E housing. It was built by Precision Turbochargers to a Vince Rigoli spec. Yeah I don't know how Matt's and my turbo were like compared to each other. Pity he wasn't still in Adelaide when we had the SA SAU dyno day a month or so back! I haven't heard how his new engine went power wise? By the sounds of things quite well (300rwkw) !
  20. If you can get your hands on a few rusty horseshoes and some 6" roofing nails then there's a rough chance you could use your pitch fork and fence palings to set-up the old trusty Armish horsepower measuring device. I've seen these used to great effect. But they do top out fairly easily. The good thing is though, if it doesn't work, you can use the bits to make a small barn for crop storage. Thanks dude rjay, Very impressive interior from the looks of it mate. On 1bar 203rwkw it isn't toooo bad a figure. As the others have mentioned above you may find your turbo combo doesn't start to really make the numbers until you wind a bit more boost into it?
  21. Dave your just making this even more confusing now!!! I just about had it all figured out and my head was getting around this whole issue... And now you bring in this new information! Was the stale piece of bread recently calibrated? Are we using the hubs of the welder, or the wheels? It the welder a US model or Aussie made? What is the loss ratio between the welder and the bread? How stale does the bread need to be? I've seen Tip Top bread show higher numbers, but only on US made welders. Sorry I couldn't help myself. I'm very bad, I know! But I did post a very long and completely serious post above
  22. G'day gobiz, my turbo is a bit of a bitza. Sorry I can't give you any hard and fast data on it Here's what I do know: It's a plain bearing Garrett based T3/T4 with a T04E 0.60 comp housing and a 0.64 exhaust housing. The exh wheel is quite large and it's been backcut. The exh housing has been machined out to fit. It has what those in the know stated as a very big comp wheel squeezed into the T04E housing. On my engine the turbo has damn near the same response as a HKS GT2835ProS. With a touch more power and a quite a bit more peak torque (similar boost). Same dyno same day.
  23. Ben and SK, the one fundamental flaw (or floor if that's your bag ) in the proven examples, is that they don't include ALL the timeslip data. Nor do they have additional info on how the car went on the pass. Of course if you isolate the ET and TS it's going to be a poor indication. Look at your own results Ben. You've run as fast as 100mph yet your best ET is a 14.1. You know that your car is good for 13.5, and others (with quicker 60's) have reached that 13.5 @ 100mph. If you were to compare both timeslips you'd see why the 13.5 car ran the quicker ET. My guess is... both your car and the 13.5 @ 100mph car would be making very similar power. A perfect example, as you've given above, is the following: 12.4 @ 111mph 12.6 @ 120mph These two sets of figures on their own tell us very little. The 12.4sec car may have got off it well before the traps? Hence the lower trap speed. But if you add the 60ft, 330ft, 660ft, 660ft mph, 1000ft and so on and so on... and THEN you include the drivers comments on top of that, such as "had a lot of wheel spin in 2nd and 3rd, missed a gear, backed out of it ~50m before the line etc... You can piece the whole picture together. A timeslip with "ALL" details, a driver that can feel what the car is doing on the strip (i.e amount of wheel spin past the 60ft mark - which obviously the slip won't show) and a bit of a clue on how to interpret that information will give a "reasonable" idea as to the potential horsepower. I believe it's a better one than any dyno figure, or dyno power curve for that matter, will give. It's not a new theory you know. Take a look at the various drag racing calculators out there. Look at the Americans, they've been using these drag racing calculators for YEARS! And they are often pretty damn close, provided ALL data is included. As with any figures, the more sets of data you have to base your info on the more accurate the result. If you take one single 1/4 pass and use that as your basis (for power potential) you "may" well be a bit off. But if you use 10-15 or more passes you'll start to get a bit more of an idea. I have a shite load of timeslips from 4yrs of drag racing my car and I can see the mph has gone up steadly with each power increase. The average mph gain at each level of modifications is very obvious. Has my ET improved? Yeah a little bit. So why only a modest improvement in ET? Because my 60ft, 330ft, 660ft and so on... have only improved a little. in other words "I" need to improve my driving skills. But by looking at the mph readings in conjunction with the ET figures, and recalling how the car was hooking up throughout the pass, I can see how the extra horsepower has gained me mph. It goes without saying that big mph doesn't necessarily equal a quick ET. But I said it anyway. Having said all that, yes I do agree that both the dyno AND drag racing calculators are at best a rough guide to estimating horsepower. Hey one things for sure, it's damn hard to fudge a 0-400m pass! Short of the timing gear faulting, the car lining up on the rears (and the officals not picking it up) or an act of god, 400m in a straight line is 400m. At the end of the day as long as you're having fun, be it on the drag strip or the dyno
  24. Auto GTS25t RB25DET's are rated 5ps lower to start with (245ps auto vs. 250ps manual). rjay, As a few others have mentioned, your dyno figure should only be used as a rough guide. A dyno figure (or even better a dyno power curve) is great if you want to compare before and after results. Go hit the strip and see how you go? The time slip will give you a good indication as to how much power you're making.
