New GTR on the way, a few questions.
whatsisname replied to Ethan_R32's topic in R Series (R30, R31, R32, R33, R34)
Glad to see she's back in action already Barks. Might need to add a set of Z32 AFM's to your list too mate. -
R32 or RX7 Series 5?
whatsisname replied to R32 Skyline's topic in R Series (R30, R31, R32, R33, R34)
Not that I'm a huge rotary fan myself but I disagree that rotaries are straight liners. Don't forget the RX7's that won in the early/mid 90's 24hr Bathurst showroom show downs! BP Visco 5000 & Triple M sponsored series 6's that ended up giving us the RX7 SP. -
R32 or RX7 Series 5?
whatsisname replied to R32 Skyline's topic in R Series (R30, R31, R32, R33, R34)
Real nice bloke you are! Pay your car (it's power level) a compliment about it running straight into the 11's & skipping 12's & you come back laughin' @ me. Well to you! Bah! The Corty doesn't have the power to run a 12 J/K Either that or the blower belt will come flying off @ 1/2 track Tell him to hurry up & get that GT-R g/box fixed & run a 10. My new goal is to keep getting higher & higher trap speeds (118-120mph) but keep in the low 13's You know start my own drag racing trend :burnout: -
hippy, Go with the top of the range Motul brake fluid - RBF600. RBF600 (Race Brake Fluid ~600'F) has a 312'c dry boiling point & a wet boiling point of 216'c - It's pretty cheap @ $25per bottle (500ml) As previously mentioned, 1 bottle for a basic change, 2 bottles for full flush. Motul Dot 5.1 is rated @ 185'c wet boiling point (they don't list the dry bp?) You can get RBF600 @ Autobarn in Mild End

R32 or RX7 Series 5?
whatsisname replied to R32 Skyline's topic in R Series (R30, R31, R32, R33, R34)
With the power you're making she should be real quick mate! Not a lot of weight too. I'm guessing you won't be getting into the 12's before me, 'cause you'll skip right past 12's & into the 11's -
Project 12sec R33 GTST Daily Driver
whatsisname replied to rev210's topic in Engines & Forced Induction
Rev, Yep mate knew all that. I still think you'll could run into misfires if you open the gap to 1.0-1.1mm with your engine set-up as is. Hmmmm? Hang on! Now I look @ your low boost (10psi) you probably shouldn't have needed to gap down at all. One more thing to add to the list of misfire causes - increased cylinder pressure or blowing the flame out. Fouled plugs (even just slightly) & a large plug gap will cause misfires very quickly. Even moreso if the cylinder pressures are getting up there, ie. increased boost levels. -

whatsisname replied to rev210's topic in Engines & Forced Induction
Rev, Regardless of heat range - open that gap back up to 1.0-1.1mm & I'll give you a 90% likelyhood of misfiring within 2 days! I've been down this road & in the end it's better to go with 0.85-0.90mm max than have to pull plugs all the time. Try 1.1mm anyway mate, not like it's hard to gap down again if need be. 7's is a v/good idea though. -
R32 or RX7 Series 5?

SLOW78U, Did you include the cost of your previous motor, g'box & diff in that $3800 build price? Actually considering how much Rob "enjoys" his cars it's a testament to the Series IV RX7 it's still going strong. When are you going to give that thing a run over the 1/4 @ EC mate? I agree with Rob. Treat the engine/car right & it'll be reliable. "Providing" it's healthy to start with! This is a Skyline forum so I'm thinking the majority are going to suggest keeping your R32, I would But if you like the RX7 in question, don't mind the "BRAP BRAP BRAP" sound, the thing goes well & is in decent nick, why not go for it!? You'll be in a better financial postion too. Cheers, Matt -
Couldn't agree more on both points mate!

Malaysian driver booked doing773km/hr
whatsisname replied to 400HP's topic in General Automotive Discussion
Stick a set of JATO packs on the roof & it'd do that speed, but it'd only do it ONCE! JATO ='s Jet Assisted Take Off rocket packs. Used for getting C130 Hercules off the ground in very short spaces. A guy in the US tried this very same trick in an old Chev. He got plenty of speed (500km/h+ from memory?) but after attempting to brake (brakes cook & failed instantly!) the car lifted off the road & hit a cliff face @ full speed. -
Sounds like a good idea.
-
S16 hey!? Good old Nissan, listening to what the people want Had a quick look @ the new Z outside North East Nissan on the way home yesterday, looks ok in the flesh! That drag Corty is impressive. 200+hp of nitrous would be fun in a motor built for it . "BANG" in a motor that wasn't!
-
Andy, I'd have thought the costs involved to do a custom turbo install on a new Z would be considerably higher than upgrading your S15. Plus the S15 is the last of its kind!
-
EnricoPalazzo, I've had Cartest 5.1 for a few yrs, it's fun. If you gather ALL the info it's actually fairly accurate for the straight line stuff! Andy, The worlds first S15 Commodore I'm going to go against the grain here mate - keep the S15 & spend $$$ on it, the new Z is cool but stick with turbo power!
-
Matt/Andy, Having just looked at the MPG footage of the drags I realise you guys were still there after my last pass! I thought you'd left , so I did too! Sorry Edit: Thanks again for the vid footage Andy! Looks good mate. Geeze my car looks slow Gotta' love the commentators, "yep you just buy one of these off the lot, up the boost & away you go" Wish I could've run low 13's on a bit of extra boost
-
Clint, Yeah mate we can do side by side 13sec 1/4's with 110+mph trap speeds I had 30psi in the rear 540's - didn't bother dropping the pressure Hopefully they go back to monthly SM's? Fortnightly would be nice! Yeah a decent clutch has just landed @ number one on my to do list, once $$$ are available.
-
Brad, Yeah mate I know exactly where your coming from, not telling me anything I didn't already know. Traction & 60' is EVERYTHING in drag racing! Your cars modest power level (mind you low weight too) its 1/4 gearing & suspension set-up is a perfect example of how it's done. Still 107mph isn't hanging around! Gearing & good power to weight is the big factors in the 107mph TS. I guess it comes down to how much we're willing to compromise the set-up of our cars. Me? I like a fast car in every sense of the word. 1/4 mile, cornering, high speed & yeah I'll admit it I like it to look fast too . This means of course that I either change btw each set-up to suit (not worth it at my level, I'm just having fun & don't have the $$$) or I just set-up my car to be a compromise btw the lot! I'm also not prepared to trash the crap out of my car to run XXX time. This is "my" compromise - Drive out of the garage, fill with pump fuel. Do the above & nothing else (not even change tyre pressure) & run 12sec 1/4's with good trap speed on road legal tyres. Do well over 250km/h. Tackle a bit of twisty stuff. Look good. Drive from Sydney to Adelaide no fuss. Handle everyday bumper-to-bumper peak hour regardless of weather. Be able to do some hands-on modifying. Oh yeah & keep the cost below $30-40k Hmmm.... An R32 GT-R sounds perfect Won't be seeing any mechanic's for a while, don't have $$$ for a new clutch ATM. Andy, Good to see you & Matt out there mate. Bummer that Matt couldn't run Thanks for the vid's dude I'm off to have a look @ how shit I drive down the 1/4
-
Sydneykid, Thanks for the info on the R34. I thought it would have had a pretty decent 60' to run a 12.4 1.8 60' is awesome for a street legal tyre. Nothing special on a MT slick though. I notice Ben's R34 has fairly low TS's for the ET's it's been running. Most of the published drag info on the car have shown quite low TS's for 240rwkw? With slicks he ran 12.4 (1.71 60') With Falken Azenis ST115's he ran 13.4 @ 103mph (2.098 60') And now on NT555 Nitto's it's best published time is 13.10 @ 104mph (1.904 60') I guess the low tyre pressures would possibly hurt his TS but not by more than 1-2mph max. The weight of the R34 would be a contributing factor too (in comparison to the R33 GTS25t). I would have expected higher TS's given the power it's making? Cheers, Matt

 Gotta' laugh, just found this quote I made in Oct'02 about my 1/4 times with the extra power. How right I was! Last line, 5th post from the top (by me). http://www.skylinesaustralia.com/forums/sh...hlight=dyno+day
-
Yeah it's reasonably loud, if you aren't listen for anything in particular you'd probably never notice it, if you are then you'll hear it for sure. Next time you start your car bring the rev's up over 1400rpm & then back to idle, you'll hear it.
-
I need one of these clutch & flywheel set-ups! Just need to find the dollars At the rate I'm going I'll be hitting trap speeds of 120mph before I run a 12
-
Trust me here guys the item your talking about IS the VCT solenoid If you free rev' the motor in neutral @ 1400rpm you'll hear it turn on, "CLICK", then as the rev's drop below 1400rpm you'll hear it "CLICK" again as it turns off. I've had a small test globe connected to the VCT plug & watched the light go on & off to see what it was doing.
-
The click you're hearing is indeed the VCT solenoid (on @ 1400rpm - off @ 4500rpm from memory?) VCT on the RB25DET is for low/mid range torque. The solenoid & plug is as you described it, mounted behind the inlet cam gear on the LHS of the motor.

Sydneykid, Any idea of the 60' & terminal speed over the 1/4 for this car? And what tyres was it using? Thanks mate
