The method I described is for an R34. You have an R33.
I have seen a method, described for an R33 and claimed to work on an R34 - it did not.
Each model has a unique method. Some are just plain ridiculous.
Re setting off the airbag - I will eventually put up a post describing how I disarmed and removed the airbag - to replace an R34 steering wheel.
I note differing opinions on the safe handling of airbags, a mechanic friend of mine will not touch them, but panelbeaters replace them regularly.

In my case, I disconnected the battery and did other things for 20 minutes - a delay of 2 minutes is sometimes suggested; I left it longer.
Then, from the side of the steering wheel, I removed one of the two access panels and disconnected the airbag plug.
