  5. Niki Lauda has ruled out Mercedes trying to sign Sebastian Vettel as they already have the "best" driver pairing. "Forget it," he told Austrian newspaper, Osterreich. "We are not trying to get Vettel, as he has signed a contract with Red Bull until forever. "With Hamilton and Nico Rosberg we already have the best driver pairing. The two push each other forward positively. Our driver change has motivated the whole team who are all inspired." http://www.planetf1.com/driver/18227/8700688/Lauda-rules-out-signing-Vettel "There is Jenson Button has revealed the McLaren MP4-28 will look very different when the upgraded car hits the track during practice for the Spanish Grand Prix. a lot that is different, you will be able to see [the changes to] the aerodynamics of the car and you will understand the difference in airflow of the car," said Button. "It is still the same colour, but the edges have changed. "There are some really cool-looking little bits on the car but I don't think it is going to be enough to fight right at the front. "We will see an improvement and hopefully that will help us understand the airflow of the car a little bit better." http://www.autosport.com/news/report.php/id/107286
  6. Lotus have revealed that Nick Chester will take over as technical director following James Allison's departure. "We are pleased to announce Nick Chester as our next technical director," Boullier said. "Nick is well known to everyone at Enstone having been with the team for over twelve years. He is already directly involved with this and next year's cars, ensuring a smooth transition which has been underway for some time. "It's an illustration of the strength and breadth of talent at Enstone that we can draw on personnel of the calibre of Nick and it's something of an Enstone tradition for new technical directors to be promoted from within. He assumes his new position at a tremendously exciting time for the sport. "The 2014 technical regulation changes present many challenges, while our current position of second place in both the constructors' and drivers' world championships mean we cannot lose sight of this year's development battle. Nick really has his work cut out, but we know he is more than capable of handling the tasks ahead. As a team and individually, we would all like to thank James Allison for his efforts during his three stints at Enstone and wish him all the best in his future endeavours." Chester added: "I have worked at Enstone for over twelve years and am delighted to take on the role of Technical Director. I am grateful to the management at Enstone for the faith they have in promoting me to this position. I am very aware of our need to keep pushing development of this year's E21 whilst developing next year's car to a set of very different regulations. There are some exciting times ahead for Enstone and I'm honoured to be part of it." http://www.planetf1.com/news/3213/8698940/Lotus-Move-To-Replace-Allison
  7. Helmut Marko believes that Daniel Ricciardo has what it takes to partner Sebastian Vettel at Red Bull. As has been the case every season, Mark Webber has to renegotiated his one-year deal with the team but now more so than ever the Australian's future at the team appears in jeopardy. It comes as no surprise that Vettel's decision to disobey instructions from team principal Christian Horner and pass Webber to take victory in Sepang did not go down well with Webber, with the team's failure to publically discipline Vettel sure to have added to tensions. As a result the rumour mill has gone into overdrive regarding whether the German will have new team-mate next season. Red Bull have said they are in no rush to make any decisions regarding their line-up, but team advisor Marko has weighed in with his opinion, asserting that either one of the Toro Rosso drivers could make the step up, but with Ricciardo the better option than Jean-Eric Vergne "Many drivers want to drive for Red Bull, and we have two very good juniors," Marko told APA. "I'm not worried that we will have something other than two top drivers in the end. "In general we are happy with both drivers," Marko added of the Toro Rosso duo. "Ricciardo is currently the better one. Vergne is too impetuous, asking too much of these sensitive tyres in qualifying." http://www.planetf1.com/driver/18227/8683901/Marko-backing-Ricciardo-for-Red-Bull

  14. Thailand is making progress with its plans to hold an inaugural Formula 1 race in 2015 after local authorities approved the layout for the proposed Bangkok track this week. The Sports Authority of Thailand met on Thursday to discuss the concept, and confirmed that a 5.995 kilometre circuit would be created near the Royal Thai Naval Dockyard in Bangkok. The circuit will run past several major tourist destinations, including the Grand Palace, the Temple of Dawn and Victory Monument. Final approval for the track configuration is now set to go to government for sign-off within the next few months. Thailand has been chasing the race for several years, with Red Bull a keen backer to hold a night race in the country's capital. The event will almost certainly attract a bumper crowd, with Mark Webber having drawn 100,000 spectators to a street demo in the city back in 2010. http://www.autosport.com/news/report.php/id/107055
  15. Pirelli will change their hard compound tyres ahead of the Spanish Grand Prix following a consultation with the Formula One teams. Several teams have expressed dissatisfaction with this year's more aggressive compounds with reigning World Champions Red Bull leading the call for change. However, others have come out in support of Pirelli's motorsport director Paul Hembery recently revealing that eight of the 11 outfits are against major changes. As such, and after deliberation back in Milan, the Italian tyre manufacturer has decided to change only the hard compound tyres. "After evaluating tyre performance over the balance of the first four races, we took the decision - in consultation with all of the teams - to change the hard compound from Spain onwards, as we did in Barcelona two years ago when we also introduced a new hard tyre for the rest of the season," Hembery said. "This latest version of the hard compound is much closer to the 2012 tyre, with the aim of giving the teams more opportunity to run a wider range of strategies in combination with the other compounds, which remain unchanged." The updated hard compound will be in action for the first time at the Spanish GP where the medium tyres will also be in use. One race later, Monaco, it will be the soft and supersoft tyres while in Canada the drivers will race on the medium and supersoft tyres. http://www.planetf1.com/news/3213/8670557/Pirelli-Alter-Hard-Compound Michael Schumacher will be back behind the wheel of an F1 car on May 19th when the German drives the historic Nurburgring Nordschleife circuit. Schumacher will drive the team's 2011 F1 car, the W02, around the legendary German track next month as part of the build-up to this year's Nurburgring 24 Hours. "I have a lot of fond memories of the Nurburgring and am really looking forward to giving fans and friends from my home town of Kerpen - which is quite close to the Nurburgring - something to remember as they see me drive by," he said. "But it will be a fantastic experience for me too, driving along the Nordschleife in a state-of-the-art Formula One Silver Arrow, particularly in view of the fact that the Silver Arrow's legend began here. "Posting a lap in a modern Silver Arrow on the most beautiful and most testing circuit in the world, what a brilliant mix - it's every motor racing driver's dream!" http://www.planetf1.com/driver/18227/8670669/Schumi-to-drive-the-Nordschleife

  18. Jenson Button says Sergio Perez needs to "calm down" before his "dirty" driving results in "something serious" happening."I was so angry and you have to be careful," Button told the Telegraph. "Being in Formula One for so long, you learn how to control your anger, but you still get close to your limit and it was one of those days. "I'm not used to driving along a straight and having a team-mate coming alongside me and wiggling his wheels at me, and banging wheels at 300 kilometres an hour. "That isn't normally the way I go racing. Maybe it's the way we go racing now, but it's not the way I want to. He touched me from behind and he touched me on the side going in a straight line at 300 kilometres an hour. That's dangerous. "I've had some tough fights in F1, but not quite as dirty as that. Something serious will happen soon, so he has to calm down." http://www.planetf1.com/news/3213/8664937/Button-Accuses-Perez-Of-Dirty-Driving Helmut Marko has backed Sebastian Vettel in the 'Multi21' affair, saying it's points and not friends that count in F1."A driver sometimes begins to develop his own character. This is not always easy but it's a must," Marko told the Bild am Sonntag. "Sebastian is not a politician who has to win an election. "In F1 you don't count your friends; only your points." http://www.planetf1.com/news/3213/8662764/-Points-Matter-Not-Friends-
  19. Bahrain Grand Prix organisers are considering holding a night race next year. With the 2014 grand prix marking 10th anniversary of the inaugural Sakhir Formula 1 event, track chiefs are determined to do something to mark the occasion. Although nothing has been finalised yet, Bahrain Grand Prix chairman Zayed Al Zayani has revealed that several possibilities are being considered - including a night race. "We are looking at many options. A night race could be one of them, but it is not the only one," Zayani told AUTOSPORT. "It is our tenth race, and our tenth anniversary, so we want to do something different. "But different doesn't necessarily mean we will race at night. "There are pros and cons to doing it, and all options are open." AUTOSPORT understands that if plans for a night race are given the green light, then the lighting infrastructure will be made permanent so the facility can utilise it all year around. Bahrain is also pushing for its event to become the first race of 2014 as well, which would fit in well with the desire of teams and tyre supplier Pirelli to hold at least one test in the Middle East before the start of the campaign. Zayani said that no decision had been made yet about where Bahrain would slot into next year's schedule, but he said the venue was prepared for a test and the opening round if required. "We are ready," he said. "We have had a first race before, we have had a third race before, and fourth race before. "But it is premature to say when we will be. We will know probably between July and September or October. "We would love to have the teams here for testing as well. But at the end of the day, that is a decision for them, not us." http://www.autosport.com/news/report.php/id/106989
