Former Formula One world champion Mario Andretti took the first full lap around the new Circuit of the Americas on Sunday, pronouncing the 20-turn, 3.4-mile racetrack as "absolutely fantastic". http://uk.eurosport.yahoo.com/news/formula-1-texas-track-opened-ahead-f1-debut-082712271.html there's a video there but no onboard, i don't think it has hit the web yet (i can't find it).

  8. Formula 1 supremo Bernie Ecclestone remains fully behind plans for the New Jersey Grand Prix to take place in 2014, despite next year's event being dropped from the calendar. Race organisers announced on Friday that they have had to postpone their inaugural event because of construction issues at the venue. In a statement it said that some of the problems related to the development of facilities at the Hudson Riverfront venue, which included the pits and paddock. Although the delay has prompted doubts about the event ever taking place, Ecclestone has made it clear that he will do everything he can to ensure that the grand prix happens. "I remain totally committed to the Port Imperial race and its unique location and attributes, and we will continue to work closely together to realise our dream in 2014," he said. Race promoter Leo Hindery Jr said the decision to delay had come about because his staff wanted to ensure that when the race went ahead it was put on to the highest standard. "We are going to be racing at Port Imperial, unfortunately just not as soon as we hoped and expected," he explained. "We promised Governor Christie, the towns, the sport and its international fans the best possible experience, and unfortunately we need additional time to ensure that happens. "We remain 100 per cent committed to the Grand Prix of America at Port Imperial, and the race could have no better partner and friend than the CEO of Formula 1, Bernie Ecclestone. We benefit greatly from his experience and counsel and from his support." The loss of the New Jersey race means that there will be just 19 races on next year's calendar, with Ecclestone telling various media sources on Friday that he had no plans to find a replacement event. http://www.autosport.com/news/report.php/id/103548 so they have a track but no pit or paddock. f**ken americans..
  9. Vijay Mallya is free to attend next weekend's Indian Grand Prix after an arrest warrant against him was withdrawn. Last week it emerged that an arrest warrant has been issued against Mallya and others involved in his Kingfisher Airlines after failing to appear in court when summoned. The matter related to a case filed by GMR Hyderabad International Airport Ltd (GHIAL) after Kingfisher Airlines bounced four cheques worth over $1,9million to the consortium running the airport in the city. However, as the funds in question have now been paid in full the matter has been dropped. Kingfisher Airlines, though, remains a company in crisis as their planes have been grounded since the start of the month due to striking staff who have not been paid for several months. http://www.planetf1.com/driver/18227/8174737/Mallya-arrest-warrant-dropped Michael Schumacher says he will not compete in any other forms of motor racing after he leaves Formula 1 at the end of the season. http://www.autosport.com/news/report.php/id/103506

  11. Thailand's government sports authority says it has struck an in-principle deal to host a Formula One race in Bangkok in 2014, with negotiations ongoing about the hosting fee, according to a report in The Nation newspaper. Kanokphand Chulakasem, governor of the Sports Authority of Thailand, was quoted as saying "Formula One has decided to include Thailand in its 2014 season calendar" with a race slated for November. He said the government will fund 60 percent of the cost, with the rest coming from sponsors including Red Bull - half Thai-owned - and the Singha brewing group. The SAT governor said talks were proceeding between F1 supremo Bernie Ecclestone and representatives of Red Bull chief Chalerm Yoovidhya. "Once the negotiations are complete, we will bring this before the cabinet for discussion and approval," Kanokphand was quoted as saying. "We will sign a deal only after we get the nod from the government." He said the hosting fee would not be more than that paid by Singapore in its just-completed contract, which he said was 1.2 billion baht ($39.2 million) per year. Areas reportedly under consideration for a circuit include the historic Rajdamnoen government district in central Bangkok, the city's Klong Toei port area or the northern suburb of Muang Thong Thani. Kanokphand said there had been feasibility talks with F1 officials about the prospective areas. http://www.planetf1.com/driver/18227/8174418/-Thailand-agrees-F1-deal- i wonder which track is going to get the axe.
  12. Felipe Massa has had a kerb at the Buddh International Circuit named after him, but for all the wrong reasons. The inaugural Indian GP last year was Massa's 150th grand prix start, but the Ferrari driver will remember the race for making a couple of wrong moves. The Brazilian hit the high kerb on the inside of Turn 8, breaking his right-front suspension and sending him into the barriers during qualifying and he was again at it on the Sunday as too much kissing of the other side of the kerb caused damage to his left-front suspension and forced him to retire. Massa immediately urged authorities to make sure that they look at the area ahead of the 2012 race and the race officials have heeded those calls. They have not only dubbed it the "Massa kerb", but Turns 6-7 and 8-9 have been extended from 5m width to 15m. "We have added additional sausage kerbs to deter the drivers even more," a BIC official told the Times Of India. "Last year there were questions raised by Ferrari but Massa's broken suspension had nothing to do with the kerbs." Another change at the BIC will see astroturf lining to provide additional safety to run-off areas at Turns 2-3 and 7-8. http://www.planetf1....named-after-him The London Grand Prix remains a pipe dream with Bernie Ecclestone admitting the race is unlikely to get support from the government. http://www.planetf1....g-into-problems Formula 1 engine supplier Cosworth has put itself up for sale after relinquishing hopes of floating on the stock market. The Times newspaper reports Cosworth had instructed JP Morgan Cazenove to seek an initial public offering some 18 months ago, but the move has been ruled out because of the instability of the market. http://www.autosport...t.php/id/103495

  15. Felipe Massa has signed a new one-year deal with Ferrari, the Italian team have confirmed. The Brazilian's future at Ferrari has been the subject of great speculation throughout the season, with a poor start to the campaign appearing as if it may cost him his seat. However, a resurgence that has seen him finish in the top five in four of the last five races - including a second place finish in Japan - appears to have been enough to secure his spot with the Maranello outfit. "Scuderia Ferrari announces it has renewed its contract with the driver Felipe Massa to the end of the 2013 race season," the team said in a statement. "The Scuderia's driver line-up for next year is therefore made up of Fernando Alonso and the aforementioned Felipe Massa." Massa admitted his delight at signing the deal and committed himself to the cause. "Ferrari is my sports family. First, I want to thank President Montezemolo and (team principal) Stefano Domenicali, who gave me confidence which I have always maintained, even in the most difficult moments," said the 31-year-old. "Both the team and the fans can be assured I will do all that is in my power to help the Scuderia to achieve the goals that arise every year." http://www.planetf1.com/news/3213/8169046/Ferrari-Stick-With-Improving-Massa

  23. Ferrari President Luca di Montezemolo has denied signing Sebastian Vettel, saying that would only create "instability" within the team. Fresh reports emerged on Monday in which a 'source inside Ferrari' told the BBC that Vettel is expected to head to the Italian stable in 2014. 'Sources inside Ferrari say they have signed a contract with Vettel, 25, with an option to join in 2014 depending on their results,' reported the Beeb, who added that the German's arrival had been 'sanctioned' by Fernando Alonso. However, di Montezemolo was quick to deny the claims, insisting that two very strong drivers at Ferrari would cause more harm than good. "I've always said that I don't want two roosters in the hen-house," the Ferrari president told Italian radio station, RAI. "I don't like that and it creates instability in the team." But while Vettel is out, it appears as if Felipe Massa, whose form as improved of late resulting in a top-three finish in Japan, is in. Asked about the Brazilian's future, di Montezemolo revealed that he would talk with Massa at length on Tuesday "and then we'll make a decision." http://www.planetf1.com/news/3213/8166139/Big-Boss-Rejects-Seb-To-Ferrari-Claims
