  3. Red Bull driver Mark Webber has revealed that whether or not he remains with the team will be determined by the results he achieves this season. The Australian's future at the Championship-winning team has been the topic of much discussion - both this season and last - as he failed to match the performances of his team-mate, Sebastian Vettel. As Webber only works on one-year deals with Red Bull, his contract comes up for renewal each season and this only adds to the speculation surrounding his position. The 35-year-old reveals that it is purely results that will determine if he stays with the Milton Keynes outfit. "The situation depends on the results I get this year," Webber is quoted as saying by Autosprint. "They've been very inconsistent this year. Up to the Monaco GP I hadn't even been on the podium, then I won. But qualifying has so far gone very well for me. "As far as I'm concerned, I'm driving very well, and I see no difference with last year's situation. "Obviously there's plenty of people who would like to come to Red Bull, but the question we have to ask ourselves is: does the team really want to change? "For sure that's a question for Christian (Horner) and Adrian (Newey). And for Dietrich (Mateschitz) and Helmut (Marko). Let's see what happens. I can only control what I do and so far I think I have done that very well. "At the moment I don't have a contract for next year, just like at this time last year and just like the year before that," he added. "Let's see how it ends up, but it can be the same again this year. That's what I mean, we don't need to go on the market because results speak for themselves." Should Webber leave Red Bull, he has been linked with a move to Ferrari to replace the under-achieving Felipe Massa. However, Webber insists that no contact has been made with the Italian outfit. "There's been nothing up to now," he asserted. "I have no offers from Ferrari. I know people were talking a lot about that, at least until Felipe [Massa] had a good weekend in Monte Carlo. But if it was all true, then Ferrari would need to field eight cars next year!" http://www.planetf1.com/driver/18227/7829143/Webber-New-deal-based-on-performance Fernando Alonso's standing as the top earner in Formula One has been reinforced by his 19th spot on Forbes Magazine's highest-paid athletes list. Earlier in the month, Business Book GP 2012 had Alonso earning almost double that of his nearest competitors in a figure that did not include endorsements. In the Forbes list (which does include endorsements), the Spaniard once again leads the way. Alonso is ranked 19th in the sports world, with total earnings of $32 million between June 2011 and June 2012. $29 million of this was made up of salary and winnings with an additional $3 million coming through endorsements. While Lewis Hamilton and Jenson Button were joint second on Business Book's list, it's Michael Schumacher who clocks in at joint 20th position overall and as the second-highest paid F1 driver according to Forbes. The German made $30 million - $20 million through salary and winnings and $10 million in endorsements. Hamilton was in 24th position on the list with $28 million in earnings, $5 million of which comes through endorsements. No other drivers feature in the top 100. Boxer Floyd Mayweather topped the list. http://www.planetf1.com/driver/18227/7829019/Alonso-heads-another-F1-rich-list

  6. Sky Sport's commentator Anthony Davidson remains in hospital after breaking his back in a high-speed accident at the Le Mans 24 hours. Taking part in the legendary endurance race in a Toyota TS030 Hybrid, Davidson's car flipped at the entry to Mulsanne Corner when the Ferrari he was lapping turned in on him. The impact sent Davidson careering into the barriers at high speed. The 33-year-old was taken to the circuit's medical centre and then transferred to the hospital where scans revealed he had broken two vertebrae in the impact. "I have felt better, that's for sure," Davidson, who will remain in hospital until Wednesday, said in an interview with Toyota Motorsport. "I am in a bit of pain, in my lumber area, the middle area of my back. That's the only thing that hurts really so I've been lucky. "Basically I have two broken vertebrae; T11 and T12. The doctors say the average recovery time is three months, but that's an average person not a professional sportsman or athlete. "That estimate is to get back to an absolutely healed bone; as strong as it was before. It's more like three weeks until the pain subsides and I get my mobility back fully." Describing the accident, the former F1 driver said: "I was almost completely past the car after the apex of the kink. I passed a Corvette and a Ferrari with the pro driver sticker on. They were fighting each other and I just assumed the Ferrari ahead was part of their group and therefore another pro. "The car was all the way to the left as you would expect a pro driver to do. It was only when I got right up to the back that I realised it was one of the amateur-stickered cars. "But I still wasn't alarmed, I still felt it was a completely legitimate move and thought he would stay to the left, which it looked like he was doing. I made the apex of the corner, started to brake and I was almost out of the corner when I felt contact on the left rear. "Instantly it spun the car, pivoted round to the left, then took off and turned upside down. At that point I felt I was in an aeroplane out of control. I knew how close the barriers were, and travelling at that speed I was going to be there in no time. That part of the crash was pretty petrifying. "It crashed back down to the ground, I felt an almighty punch up my spine when the car hit back down on four wheels. I still had my eyes closed and my hands off the wheels, in the brace position. Half a second after that I had the forward impact into the barrier." He added: "I reopened my eyes and realised I was still here, albeit in a bit of pain. I had feeling and could move my feet; everything was working. I know I should stay in the car, especially with back pain, but initially I felt full of panic and claustrophobia, I just had to get out of the car. It was really odd. I banged the door open and clambered out carefully because I knew I was in pain. I had to stretch out and the closest point was the side of the car, then the medics came over." http://www.planetf1.com/driver/18227/7822310/Davidson-remains-in-hospital

  16. Lewis Hamilton continued to set the pace in Canada as the McLaren driver finished a mere 0.054s ahead of Fernando Alonso on Friday afternoon. Jean-Eric Vergne got proceedings underway with a 1:21.108 but within five minutes was outside the top ten with Kamui Kobayashi, Kimi Raikkonen and Nico Rosberg taking the P1 slot. The benchmark was down to 1:16.738. Pastor Maldonado was the next to lead the way as Timo Glock had the sessions first incident as he spun his Marussia at Turn 1 and came to a halt in the middle of the track facing the wrong direction. Thankfully everyone was aware he was there and avoided him before he spun around and continued on his way. Rosberg returned to the front before losing out to Fernando Alonso. Minutes later the Spaniard became the latest in a long list to get it wrong at Turn 8. But while most cut the grass, Alonso put his F2012 into a full 360' across the grass and returned to the action at Turn 9. Lewis Hamilton took over at the front on the super soft tyres and lap by lap lowered his lap time to a 1:15.439. With drivers switching to longer runs, Hamilton was secure in the P1 slot when the session was red flagged. With 40 minutes remaining in practice, Bruno Senna lost the back end of his Williams into the Turn 14, the infamous Wall of Champions. The Brazilian, who was testing the latest rear wing, hit it backwards hard before his FW34 rebounded to hit the wall again with the front right. Back underway with 30 minutes left, the drivers were quickly out on track. The two Ferraris were the big movers with Alonso taking second place, 0.054s down on Hamilton, and Felipe Massa third. Practice Two ended with Hamilton in the P1 slot with a 1:15.259 followed by the two Ferraris. Sebastian Vettel was fourth while a late appearance from Jenson Button after a gearbox change put him down in 13th place. 17. Williams to run aggressive new rear wing design in practice for Canadian GP Pastor Maldonado will evaluate an aggressive new rear wing design for Williams during free practice for the Canadian Grand Prix. The team has admitted that the performance of its DRS has held it back at times this year, particularly in qualifying. Maldonado added that the new design, which has a more curved profile than its predecessor, is part of a raft of updates for this weekend. "In Barcelona it was OK," Maldonado told reporters about the performance of the DRS. "We have a new rear wing here, and I hope it will be better for the DRS but also for all the weekend. "It's all to discover. We need to test tomorrow and analyse many things on the car. We have a completely new aero package, so let's see." At the Chinese Grand Prix earlier this season, Maldonado's team-mate Bruno Senna said that he felt the team could make big gains with an improved DRS. "If you can get three tenths from the DRS effect, which is not impossible, then you are already jumping three or four positions," said Senna. "We know all the other teams have a bigger effect [from DRS], so on tracks with long straights it is hard." http://www.autosport.com/news/report.php/id/100177 Dany Bahar dismissed from Group Lotus role Dany Bahar has been dismissed from his role as CEO of Group Lotus with immediate effect, the Malaysian-owned sportscar manufacturer announced on Thursday. Just a fortnight after it was revealed that Bahar was being suspended following a complaint about his conduct, Group Lotus said that his employment contract had been terminated. In a statement issued by Group Lotus, it said: "The decision was made by the Board of Group Lotus plc following the results of an investigation into a complaint made against him by the company's penultimate holding company, DRB-HICOM Berhad." Bahar was the man who spearheaded the idea of rebranding the Renault team as Lotus for this season. That plan put him in conflict with the ambitions of current Caterham team principal Tony Fernandes - who embarked on reviving the Lotus name before Bahar joined Group Lotus at the end of 2009. Group Lotus said that Aslam Farikullah would be its new Chief Operating Officer. Group Lotus' owners DRB-Hicom insist that they remain fully focused on securing a bright future for Group Lotus, despite speculation that it was open to selling the sportscar company. Dato' Sri Haji Mohd Khamil Jamil, Group Managing Director of DRB-HICOM Berhad said: "I would like to assure you that we remain committed to ensure the ongoing and future business operations of the Lotus Group as we take the Lotus Group to the next level to remain relevant in the global automotive industry. "I look forward to bringing mutual benefits to not only DRB-HICOM and PROTON Holdings Berhad but also the Lotus Group and its employees as well as contribute to the growth of the British automotive industry." http://www.autosport.com/news/report.php/id/100172

  19. Kubica undergoes surgery to damaged elbow Robert Kubica has undergone surgery in order to improve the mobility of his arm following his accident last year. The Pole, who continues recovering from the horrific crash he was involved in during a rally at the start of last year, had surgery at the Pederzoli hospital at the end of last month, when parts of his elbow were replaced with two prosthesis. According to the doctor in charge of the operation, that will allow Kubica to fully handle the steering wheel of a car. The doctor also said that the Polish driver had been carrying out tests in a simulator prior to the operation. "This way the driver will be able to fully handle the steering wheel, while before he was unable to rotate the palm down, so he was forced to release the steering wheel in order to turn left," head surgeon Ruggero Testoni was quoted as saying by Italian media. "The surgery was preceded by a series of tests in a car simulator. It will take at least one month in order to stabilize." http://www.autosport.com/news/report.php/id/100151
  20. Fernando Alonso is reportedly Formula One's highest-paid driver, bringing home a staggering €14 million more than McLaren's drivers. According to a French publication, the Business Book GP 2012, Alonso is netting an estimated €30 million per annum - and that does not include any sponsorship deals. The next on the list are the two McLaren drivers with both Lewis Hamilton and Jenson Button pulling in €16 million. So it's no wonder Sebastian Vettel may or may not be considering a switch to Ferrari one day as for now he's only earning €10 million per season, a vast difference to what Alonso is bringing home. The reigning World Champ, though, is on a par with Ferrari's second driver, Felipe Massa, while Michael Schumacher, who used to be F1's biggest earner back in his Ferrari days, is now eighth on the list, €2 million below his Mercedes team-mate Nico Rosberg. 21. Red Bull forced to change floor design as FIA clarifies regulation over holes Red Bull will be forced to modify the controversial holes in the floor of its RB8 after the FIA clarified its position and deemed the design was not permissible. The ruling, sent by the FIA to all the teams, will apply from next weekend's Canadian Grand Prix onwards and does not affect Mark Webber's Monaco Grand Prix victory. AUTOSPORT understands Red Bull does not plan to contest the ruling, and will modify its car accordingly for Canada. Ferrari, McLaren and Mercedes had all expressed doubts about the legality of the holes ahead of the rear wheels of the Red Bull in Monaco, although they decided against a post-race protest. Red Bull believed there was a grey area in the rulebook concerning the design of the holes, which were not believed to have provided a significant performance advantage. The FIA has moved to outlaw the design however, saying that the rule book makes it implicit that fully enclosed holes may not be located in the bodywork just ahead of the rear wheels. http://www.autosport.com/news/report.php/id/100074
