  6. Caterham shrugs off Heikki Kovalainen's engine blow-up in Monaco Grand Prix practice Caterham's technical director Mark Smith downplayed the significance of Heikki Kovalainen's engine failure during first practice for the Monaco Grand Prix. The Finn's session came to a halt some five minutes from the end when his Renault power unit blew up spectacularly while driving through the tunnel. Smith said, however, that the engine was due to be replaced for Saturday and, with the problem happening at the end of the session, Kovalainen did not lose any track time. "Even though Heikki's FP1 was cut short by the engine failure it was at the end of the session and we did not lose any track time as the session was red-flagged," said Smith. "The new engine he ran in FP2 was due to go on his car tomorrow anyway, it had covered more than 2,000kms, so it really was not a big problem for us to see his morning session end that spectacularly!" Kovalainen, 21st quickest in the afternoon, was pleased with the updates introduced by his team this weekend. "This morning's session went pretty well," he said. "We tried a new suspension part early on that felt pretty good, and then we ran through a normal FP1 session on the primes until the engine let go as I was entering the tunnel towards the end of the session. "As soon as I engaged neutral the rear axle locked up and that brought FP1 to a slightly early end." http://www.autosport.com/news/report.php/id/99810

  9. Mercedes boss Ross Brawn is confident Michael Schumacher will make it onto the podium this year, saying the team are to blame for some of his poor displays. Fresh questions have been raised over the seven-time World Champion's future in the sport following his third DNF of the season in Spain a fortnight ago. The 43-year-old slammed into the back of Bruno Senna and then called the Brazilian an "idiot" over the team radio, but the stewards found that he was the guilty party and slapped him with a five-race grid penalty for this weekend's Monaco Grand Prix. It has been the story of his season though as he has picked up just two points from the first five races which is in stark contrast to team-mate Nico Rosberg who has 41 points behind his name following a race win in China. Schumacher, though, still has the backing of his team boss as Brawn feels they haven't exactly helped the German's cause. "Much has been said and written after his accident in Spain, but we should not forget that WE - the team - have let him down in three of the five races by not delivering the best job possible," he told Bild. "We must do better. I saw Michael's real driving quality in the first race. Therefore, I believe that we will still se Michael on the podium this year." Schumacher's three-year contract with the Brackley squad runs out at the end of the season and Brawn says "when the time comes, we will sit down together and talk about Michael's future". http://www.planetf1.com/news/3213/7772882/-Merc-Have-Let-Schumi-Down- ..........
  10. Mercedes says Paul di Resta could replace Michael Schumacher in 2013, if the seven-time champion quits Paul di Resta is a contender for a Mercedes seat if Michael Schumacher does not continue in Formula 1 next year, team CEO Nick Fry has confirmed. Speaking to Sky Sports News, Fry insisted that no decision had been taken on Schumacher's future but said the Force India driver is an obvious candidate. "Paul's on our radar," Fry said. "He has done a fantastic job, he's a nice guy, he's a great team player and he would be one of the drivers undoubtedly that, if Michael were to decide he didn't want to continue, we would look at. "We haven't reached that time in our thinking yet, but we have all got a lot of admiration for Paul." Former McLaren AUTOSPORT BRDC Award winner di Resta has a long-term association with Mercedes. He won the F3 Euro Series title in 2006 with Mercedes and went on to win the DTM with the marque in 2010. http://www.autosport.com/news/report.php/id/99742 to early to say ''roy was right''?

  12. Despite rumours that he could be axed this season, Ferrari insist they could yet retain Felipe Massa for next year's Championship. Massa, who last won a grand prix back in 2008 at his home race in Brazil, has struggled in recent seasons. After a massively disappointing campaign in 2011, in which he failed to reach the podium, even the Brazilian acknowledged he needed a flying start to this season. However, the opposite has happened. Massa has bagged just two points in five grands prix compared to the 61 - and one race victory - that his team-mate Fernando Alonso has achieved. This has led to rumours that he could be replaced some time this season. Massa, though, recently came out claiming that he has the full support of all at Ferrari and it looks as if that is the case as spokesman Luca Colajanni says the 31-year-old could even stick around next season. "Felipe has the full confidence of the team, starting with our president," Colajanni told Brazil's O Estado newspaper. "We have not decided who will be our driver in 2013 but Felipe has not been discarded." As for speculation that the injury Massa suffered during qualifying for the 2009 Hungarian GP has slowed him down, Colajanni says there is no proof of this. "We have no evidence that makes up think that Felipe has slowed down because of the accident. Zero," he said. This was a sentiment backed up by F1 doctor Gary Hartstein who acknowledges that while "such an experience changes you, you can't say that it is why Felipe has not won." http://www.planetf1.com/news/3213/7766983/-Massa-In-Line-For-2013-Ferrari-Drive- .................wtf? some kind of pick me up? or maybe they're not watching the races?

  15. Williams working to determine cause of fire, FIA says 31 people treated in total It is so far confirmed only nine members were from F1 teams but other team personnel were understood to be involved. Caterham said four of its members had been taken to the medical centre for examination, while another Force India mechanic had also suffered from smoke inhalation and was under observation. Formula 1's ruling body, the FIA, said a total of 31 people were seen by medical staff from the circuit. Seven had been transferred to local hospitals. http://www.autosport...rt.php/id/99605 no one seriously hurt that we know of terry. nice to see people form other teams helping them.

  17. McLaren now focused on points after Lewis Hamilton loses Spanish GP pole McLaren says its focus now is on scoring as many points as possible in the Spanish Grand Prix, after accepting the stewards' decision to demote Lewis Hamilton to the back of the grid. Hamilton was stripped of his pole position after the FIA ruled that he had breached the rules in not returning to the pits after completing his qualifying lap. The stewards who discussed the matter did not accept that a team error, which meant not enough fuel went in to Hamilton's car prior to his final run in Q3, was grounds for force majeure. When asked by AUTOSPORT for a reaction to the stewards' decision, a McLaren spokesman said: "We accept that the stewards did not agree with our interpretation of force majeure. Our aim is now to maximise the points we can score tomorrow." http://www.autosport.com/news/report.php/id/99565
  18. Hamilton loses Spanish GP pole position Pastor Maldonado will start from pole position for the Spanish Grand Prix after Lewis Hamilton was excluded from qualifying for not returning to the pits after setting his best lap. Hamilton's McLaren was found to not have had enough fuel on board to comply with the rules that demand a car returns to the pits under its own power after qualifying with enough petrol for a one-litre sample to be provided to the FIA. Only under circumstances of 'force majeure' are drivers allowed to stop on that slowing down lap - and stopping deliberately because there is not enough fuel to finish the tour and supply that sample is not acceptable. Following a meeting with the stewards at the Spanish Grand Prix, McLaren was informed that the 'technical' problem that it suggested was the reason for Hamilton being told to stop was not enough grounds to justify its action. The team explained that not enough fuel had been put into the car ahead of the final qualifying lap - which the FIA did not agree was enough reason for 'force majeure' As a result, the stewards ruled that Hamilton be excluded from qualifying, but would be allowed to start from the back of the grid. "The stewards received a report from the Race Director which stated that during post-qualifying scrutineering a sample of fuel was required from car 4, however, the car failed to return to the pits under its own power as required under Article 6.6.2 of the FIA Formula One Technical Regulations," said the stewards in a statement. "The Stewards heard from the team representative Mr Sam Michael who stated that the car stopped on the circuit for reasons of force majeure. A team member had put an insufficient quantity of fuel into the car thereby resulting in the car having to be stopped on the circuit in order to be able to provide the required amount for sampling purposes. "As the amount of fuel put into the car is under the complete control of the Competitor the Stewards cannot accept this as a case of force majeure. "The Stewards determine that this is a breach of Article 6.6.2 of the FIA Formula One Technical Regulations and the Competitor is accordingly excluded from the results of the Qualifying Session. The Competitor is however allowed to start the race from the back of the grid." The result means that Maldonado will start ahead of Fernando Alonso for Sunday's race. Speaking before being informed of the penalty, Hamilton reckoned that in the event of a penalty he could still deliver good race pace. "Looking at our long runs, I think our long runs were not too bad," he said. "The option tyre was not spectacular with the set-up we had, but we have made some changes so it should be better in that sense. "The long run on the prime was very good, but then again so was it with the guys just behind me. Overtaking here is very, very tough as it has showed in previous years, but we do have DRS. "I would hope we can overtake but I would doubt it – but I would do everything I could to move forwards. "Definitely the guy in front, the top two or three, generally have an easier job because they have a lot clearer air. But we will give it our all and we hope with improved pit stops as well we hope we can make steps forward." Revised Spanish GP grid: 1. Pastor Maldonado Williams-Renault 2. Fernando Alonso Ferrari 3.
