JimX, have you actually seen a rebuild BB Garrett turbo for 1K? I was looking for the right turbo for months, saw none at that price. I ended up getting one new from Japan as it saved me over 3K on the price from australia. If you have a look here: http://www.greenline.jp/catalogue/bblist.p...rand=HKS#engine they have bolt on (T3) HKS 2530 for $2226 AUD (79Yen:1AUD), add 12.5% duty ($279) = $2504, plus 10% GST ($251) = $2756 then you would of course have to pay postage. this is worse case scenario of you get hit by customs - I didnt. Compare GCG who sell a 380hp garrett GT25 BB turbo for $2750, that is with a gt25 flange not a T3. Or if you want to high flow, they will charge you around 2.2 - 2.4K exchange - so add another 300-450 for what you could sell a stock turbo for. I know that when things go and you need to replace in a hurry and are limited by funds you are sort of stuck - I had the same problem with a clutch, ended up costing me more 6 months down the track though when I needed to upgrade to what I would have originally bought given the time/funds to source it. And by the way I have seen HKS 2530 for 1.2K in excellent conditon second hand shame you couldnt have held off for a bit, because they can be had in good condition very cheap if you search around and do some digging. A bit of luck helps too.

If they are pricks, no one will go there - reputations carry far and wide. I found that most places in vic were actually really good (those places that were absolute sticklers, everyone knew about and no one went there), didnt worry too much if the car was a little low, or exhaust a bit noisey, minor bending of the rules as long as it wasnt bodgey back yard stuff.

JimX, The point of my post was to compare performance of Garrett BB turbos to HKS BB turbos HKS turbos are not cheap, but with the fall in the aussie dollar, even direct importing and paying full duty and gst (if you are unlucky) they are not much more than a garrett turbo. Check out the greenline website. As for replacing the cartridge, once again direct from japan about 1.4K (price actually paid by a mate who rebuilt his HKS GT2530)BUT you have a new turbo. If you compare a garrett ball bearing turbo to a HKS turbo, then things start to look very similar - alot more affordable than people seem to think. As I posted it boils down to choices, I chose to pay a bit extra and get the extra and I dont mind waiting a bit longer for it. Even second hand you can get a 2530 for under 2K in excellent conditon (rebuilt) - cheaper than a new garrett BB turbo. Choices. Not that I am saying there is anything wrong with going a different path.

Could be a good thing, as all you do is find a registered inspection place and they do the paperwork Like in vic, when I got a car registered at an isnpection station all they do is stamp the paper work, the inspection place checks compliance/legality, issues a roadworthy cert and all is good:D Here's hoping its part of the govt cutbacks, so they dont need to employ a heap of people at regency. How good would that be. Hippy in NSW if a car is over xx (cant remeber) years old, it must be inspected and a certificate of roadworthiness issued. The upside is that there is no way in hell that poor old regency would be able to handle these sorts of numbers of vehicles, therefore it would be outsourced - by by regency...hehehe

The guys name is John Hurley, 6 Little Rundle St Kent Town 08 8362 4906 For the life of me I just cannot remeber the name of the joint sorry. Make sure you let him know that you want the injectors flowed and rated comparatively, ie 1 to 6 and ask him to mark the injectors properly, I had mine engraved with a number so no confusion:) EDIT: tuning will most probably be done by D1 Garage (www.d1garage.com)

adaptor plate works, manifold (if made properly) works better. If GCG offer any guarantees about the wastegate then go for it. I am fitting a 40mm gate with HKS 3037 turbo, I think it should be ok, time will tell. Size of the gate isnt everything, it depends to some degree on the size of the turbine AR and how the wastegate is plumbed in relation to the exhaust gas flow as well. If they sell the gate matched to the turbo and manifold/adaptor - if it dont work, take it back. $600 for a new gate is pretty bloody cheap.

Good luck at Pritek, you might get lucky, also somewhere like enzed? I only found this place on recommendation of a mate of a mate - went to 5 different shops looking for the bloody thing. I think autobarn had the banjo connector ( I got mine off a mechanic mate, but while in autobarn looking for the hosetail connector they asked if I wanted one), but defianately didnt have the hosetail connector for the bottom. I am not sure about the placement of the pickup, just got it where the stocker is for the reasons stated above. I do know that I drove it on empty (57litres to fill her up) and absolutely no signs of surge so I am happy. Spose if the boys at nissan put it there, its becuase that is where it works best. I do know a couple of guys who have been getting surge problems with as much as 1/2 tank - and that was fitted by a workshop! so probably best be careful.
-
Is that with a manifold adaptor or manifold, or a second hand kit? Price the parts individually. The turbo is around 3K, the wastegate only 600? (seems pretty cheap) therefore they would have to be giving you a manifold worth 2.2K for 200?. If they did this every day, they wouldnt be in business very long. Not knocking what you are saying Lepperfish, so please dont take offence - you did ask what people think:) I think someone has been miss quoting things to you, or you have the absolute deal of the century.
-
Thats pretty bloody good for a turbo that size! You still running around putting down 280rwkw? If you are too worried about the internals, you could always throw a nice head gasket on there, 8.6:1CR, 1.5bar, sweet

JimX, you dont need to put the pickup back in place, but it may help with surge on lower fuel tank levels, also, there is a filter on the pump, but I was told by a mate who is a mechanic that he believes that not putting the pickup on is probably the reason he has had to replace 044s in the past as they died after about 6 months. This is what he told me anyways, so I did what he said. Its not too hard, you just need the adaptor to go in the bottom and a hosetail connector to go onto that. Slide a short piece of 1/2 inch fuel line over the hosetail connector, put two clamps on, then attach the pickup. the other thing is that the pump must be placed higher up the bracket so that the pickup is in the same place as stock, so you will have to cut off the metal pipe, no other way around it that I could see, or I would have done it. the banjo connector is a metal fitting that goes on the top of the pump. the pump has holes in the side, therefore you cant put the fuel hose directly ontop of it. The banjo connector goes off at 90-deg to the pump, so you can attach a hose to it. this is why you need the 3/8in fuel line, as the banjo connector is too fat to fit the stock stuff onto. You will also need another hose clamp to fit to the fuel line where it attaches to the fuel tank cover, as 3/8 is a pretty loose fit, but nice and tight on the banjo connector. Have fun - I did. PS, as posted above, the connectors and banjo clamp can be gotten from a decent speed shop. EDIT: it really isnt a very noisey pump when mounted in tank, just a purr when ouside the car with engine off (when you first turn the key) during idle, I can hardly hear a thing, and my car is pretty quiet, ie legal.

Those priced dont come anywhere near greenlines. Jason, once again please pass on best wishes for a speedy recovery to Simon. Cheers

I have never, ever heard anyone say anything bad about HKS turbos, except the 2540. I have never, ever heard anyone who has driven cars with garrett turbos, and a correctly sized HKS turbo say they prefer the garrett. All the evidence, be it hearsay, points in one direction only. Choices are personal, but if everybody who has used the HKS turbos comments that nothing in the garrett range comes close, you would have to be a bit niave to expect different. Names mean alot in Japan, but generally the name is only established through performance. I find the japanese like to let their results do the talking. Merli, what turbine AR does your turbo have? and when does it start making boost and hit full boost (however much that is)? Cheers Steve

JimX, here is a copy of a post I put up for fitting 044, hope it helps a bit also, I forgot to add, you need to cut off the metal pipe that comes down to the old fuel pump, as the o44 has to be fitted alot higher than the stock one so the pickup is in the same spot. I would suggest tracing an outline of the stock pump before you remove anything, that way the pickup will be in the right spot when you put it back in. Sorry I dont have any photos.

Z32 is the model, 300ZX is the car. Just like you could have different model commodores, VY, VX, VP - the 300ZX has different models Z31 (to 89) and Z32 (90 on). So yes a Z32 is a twin turbo 300ZX. I have no idea about their fuel pumps, sorry.

Just another thought, what clutch are you running?
-
Yep, $100 in adeliade. If its a garrett core, not a HKS one, it just isnt the same. Although garrett make HKS cores, ONLY HKS can sell them. they put in alot of r&d, and want to protect that, and therefore have an agreement with garrett not to sell to anyone else. So unfortunately, were not comparing apples and apples. Probably still worth replacing that pipe though - couldnt hurt.

Should be getting well over 200rwkw with that turbo! What support systems do you have. Honestly, I have been in a RB20/HKS 2530 powered car that was putting down 230rwkw @ 1.2 bar and it pulled like whore. Another thing that it may be is have you replaced the pipe from the AFM to the turbo as these can suck shut as you start getting up in power. you should DEFINATELY be getting alot better power than 200rwkw. To get a pipe made wouldnt be more than $100 cos that is what mine is costing new.

Thanks for the offer Dean, probably take you up on that one:) Hoping around the 300 mark at this stage - similar to MattR's. Depends on how well the turbo goes (a HKS 3037S 56T) and how the bottom end holds up. I have a few other plans too, which will include a bigger turbo, but they are way off at the moment. N/A® I got them done by a place on little Rundle street, cant remember the name off the top of my head, got it written down somewhere. they quoted me $5.50 per injector, but it ended up costing a bit more (55.00) as they had to set up the machine for them (apparently there are dozens of differnet size/shape side feed injectors) then they had to pulse them for some time as the initial tests flowed 5% apart, which they werent happy with. He put this down to being new, and sure enough when they had been run for about 20 mins, they came up almost all exactly the same, just under 1% out on one injector, and a poofteenth out on two of the others.
-
Dean, Still got a way to go, a couple of weeks till the turbo is fitted, then head gaget, cams, cam gear, oil cooler, more handling mods, hoping to get my hands on some bride seats if I am lucky - it never ends. Hopefully all will be sorted in time for summer:)

The o-rings did come with the ones I got. The bottom o-ring, near the pintle fitted fine, it was just the top one that is supposed to seal between the collar and the fuel rail that was too thin. O-rings arent very expensive, only a couple of dollars each, but if you can fit the stockers, save a few dollars anyways. If you find a fuel injection specialist they should be able to flow the injectors for you.

I found a big stainless hose clamp, like on the intercooler pipes, works pretty well.
-
Have you ever seen what fuel will do to the sticky stuff on tape?

$300-$500 for a full respray? Is that right, and 2k if he does all the prep? Is standard Sydeny prices? that sounds so unbelieveably cheap - cost me $300 just to get a decent spray on a front bar - Maybe I need to go for a drive to sydney.

Anyone imported a 15+ year old car under new scheme?
Steve replied to esprit's topic in General Automotive Discussion
Joel, you still have to comply with ADRs, stuff like intrusion bars, seat belts, child restraints, ULP fuel thingy, tyres etc - but you dont have to buy compliance plates and dont have those associated costs. -
I got stuffed around a bit waiting for some stuff, suggest you enquire as to availability before ordering, may save sitting waiting wondering what has happened. INASNT - if you are worried, just e-mail Jason in Japan. I have e-mailed him before about stuff and he is usually pretty prompt with the replies.
