Aftermarket BOV, performance or wank factor
Steve replied to hypntk's topic in Engines & Forced Induction
any more details? what sort of boost? did he say how much shorter the life was? I wonder if a big boost drag car would have the same issues as a mildly tuned street car? -
Aftermarket BOV, performance or wank factor
Steve replied to hypntk's topic in Engines & Forced Induction
I used to think a bov was essential, until I removed it all together. It was explained to me that for on/off throttle response, depressurising the intercooler and pipework was a bad thing. Not just for drift, but also a spirited driving where you might adjust the throttle slightly - as soon as you back off even slightly, the bov lifts and you have throttle lag. Much, much better throttle response once it was gone, the car feels quicker without it, and is better to drive IMO. As for damage to turbo, hmm, not sure exactly how it is supposed to damage the turbo, certainly dont know anyone who has had turbo failure that could be directly attributed to no BOV - I have heard arguements for and against on this one, such as the sound you hear is the air going around the compressor, not jsut slamming up against it, which makes sense to me. Does anybody have any hard evidence either way on this? or is it just one of those 'accepted things' that has never been tested or proven? -
Drkside, quite possible thats why they sent him out there, to check any cars that look like they have been modified - sort of like a defect station (as they have over east). did you end up getting a defect for the suspension? Speaking of suspension, I just re-checked mine today, as I fitted new coilovers recently and wanted to make sure the heights hadnt changed too much, or unevenly, which can happen when springs settle and sag after you first fit them..... 78mm off the ground, min legal in Aust is 100mm. So glad the guys didnt pull out a tape measure, but now my car looks like a 4WD (its back to 100mm)

Some people certainly just seem to be in la la land when they are behind the wheel, glad to hear you and the car are ok, and the seats dont need dry cleaning

Topaz, for each fine you have had, how often have you done the same thing and not been caught?

hmm, so do I need to buy a lotto ticket? this is the first time I have been pulled over in around 20 years, apart from the occasional RBT. In SA, I drove past a speed trap where they were doing a defect station at the same time (SAPOL love defecting anything imported, even if its stock - any mods and you are farked) - anyway the copper just about shat himself when he saw me cruise past, tried to pull me across 4 lanes of traffic, went red and just glared when I drove past. havent even had a sideways glance from passing cops here in the west - hope I dont meet any of the ones you are talking about damono. this guy was just doing a job, and wasnt out to win any ego points thank god.

Why werent you selling these when I was over there! I did appreciate the loan though - guys these are excellent rims, very light weight and easily worth the money being asked, new replacement would be thousands.

Well, I think I had a meeting with a couple of the most decent cops I have ever met last night! I was pulling on to the Reid hway onramp, put my foot in a bit hard, and the back end swung out. I pulled it straight back in, about 30 seconds later I had a traffic cop pull me over. He asked: do you know why I pulled you over? I replied (probably somewhat stupidly): not really (I did know why) He said: your back end swung out on the way on to the highway - thats actually classed as undue care, you also spun your wheels - are you aware of the new rules in this state (my car isnt transferred from SA reg)? I could confiscate your car for 2 days Me: fark, really? He then asked if I had any mods to the car, I replied yes, and he asked me to pop my bonnet. When he looked under the bonnet, he asked if I had permits in SA ( SA rego) for the mods. I explained that they dont issue permits, unless its something that needs engineering, but that everything I had was legal. He chatted for a bit, asking how long I had been here, if I intended getting the rego transferred. He told me to make sure I get permits when I transfer the rego, as its a $100 fine for any mod without a permit. He then said, well, you dont seem like the sort of guy to do it on purpose, if you had kept the back end out, or fishtailed it would of been a different story. He also commented that I stayed withing the speed limit. Result, $100 fine for careless driving - which is fair enough, I did have a pretty good idea that back end would step out. I thanked him, wished them a good night, and am still counting my blessings Bloody unbelievable - if this was in SA they would have taken turns in bending me over and seeing if they could make me cry. I love WA On a side note, his offsider (the newbie) did point out my tinker drift club sticker and said 'this wont be helping your case any' - bit of a smart ares, but I suppose what do you expect from newbie coppers that havent had a chance to learn how to be decent people I told him it was a gift from a japanese friend who belongs to the club - he just hurumphed (if thats a word) Made my weekend

looks bigger than a GT30 - maybe because its so shiny

dude, that looks nasty - t88 is it?

If you want octane boost, buy some tolulene.

If the fuel cost 10c per litre more, using 40 litres of fuel per week will only cost around $200 a year. Worth it? How much does it cost to rebuild an engine? How much do mods that give a few rwkw cost? Knock, or pinging, or detonation is a spontaneous ignition of fuel/air mix in the cylinder before the flame front - it is an explosion. Normal ignition is a controlled burn, not an explosion. Detonation will smash engines, the more power and revs you are making, the more severe the effect it will have. The RON (octane) of a fuel is its resistance to detonation. If you dont think 98 makes any difference, with a stock ecu, fill it with 98, run it for a while, fill it again (to get ant 96ron out of the fuel system) - do a reset on the ecu and drive it around for a week, overtake a few cars, give the car a squirt - Then, fill with 96 and drive in a comparible manner, you will notice a difference. I drove my skyline from SA to WA, on the way I had to use 96 a few times, as even carrying 40litres of 98 ron with me, at times I could use nothing else. I noticed a considerable reduction in power around peak torque (4000 ish rpm) and above. Very, very noticeable, not just a little, the stock ECU was pulling out timing to prevent detonation destroying the engine - its self learned maps had been adjusted to 98 ron. Upon reaching pumps that supplied 98 ron, I reset the ecu and the difference was instantaneous and very noticeable. The higher the RON, the more timing/boost can be used before detonation will occur. If your ecu is set up to run timing appropriate to 96 ron, and you switch to 98 - it will make little difference because the timing hasnt changed, maybe only a little difference at idle, and run a little smoother, a little more power, but very marginal. Generally, you need to increase timing to gain the full benefits of higher ron. Higher oygenate fuels, such as elf LMS is different all together, not only is it less prone to detonation, but it will make more power because of the chemical structure of the fuel. If you tune your engine with 98ron, and run 96 it will make a difference. If you run 96ron on the stock ecu, it will not run as well as 98. If you upgrade to 98, you MUST reset the stock ecu, to take advantage of the higher resistance to knock. Any comparison of different fuels SHOULD have the cars tune adjusted according to the fuel they are using, then be conducted in identical situations, such as an ADR drive cycle test to be of any real worth. Even throwing the cars on a dyno would have been of more worth than just getting 3 different cars and driving them on the road - what a joke. Just throwing 3 different fuel is 3 cars is really a waste of time and money. sorry, starting to waffle on a bit now

:soap: finally, I get to use this little fella

dyno, expect to pay around 3-400 if nothing else needs attention. So, make sure you do plugs and fuel filter first - never hurts to make sure

I think I would like to ask how many people actually give a flying fark what anybody on the stand has to say. probably only good for a bit of free entertainment, pretty funny really.

take a look at this thread http://www.nissansilvia.com/forums/index.p...l=e-manage&st=0 gives a few q and a

Just to throw a curve ball, sorry - but have you considered the Greddy e-manage? It starts life as a SAFC, but can be cheaply upgrade to provide FULL management. Lap top programming etc. It really is a versatile ecu, cost a little more than the SAFC, but alot cheaper than power fc, especially initial purchase.

If you have a pod without a partition, the ambient temperature would increase the reading from the temp probe, and therefore change the reading. A higher intake temp gives a higher corrected figure. If the temp probe is sitting against anything in the engine bay, you may get an over inflated intake temp - as the air coming into the pod is coming straight through the open bonnet. By comparison, my intake temps were 26 degrees, but I am using a partition. The run was done within a couple of minutes of my car arriving from a long drive. Still somewhat interesting as the ambient air temp would have probably been closer to 12-14deg at the time. This is a good example of the fact it is almost impossible to compare dyno figures 100% accurately. I am quite sure the air going into your car was not 20 degrees warmer than the air going into mine. Dyno is for tuning - they give you a good idea of where AF ratios are at, how and where power is delivered and where there may be problems with the current setup. Peak power should be a guide only.

Road rage theory 101 If the guy is speeding, let him pass - do everything you can to let them by - two reasons. 1. there could be an emergency (not likely, but it may happen) and if you were in a similar situation, you would appreciate people getting out of the way. 2. if the guy is driving like a dick, and you make it more difficult, they are more likely to have an accident which could involve someone YOU know or love. And remeber, everyone does stupid things on the road at some time, to varying degrees, no one is immune. Tolerance Now, if only I could follow the above all the time nudey, you are a bloody criminal, and you deserve to get locked up for what you did. Then a nice gentleman by the name of bubba could show you exactly what he thinks of you beating up small children. You need some serious help, it would be a good idea to get some before someone else gives you what you deserve - no matter how big your ego, nor how good you are, there is always someone who is better. You'll get yours. Just be very, very glad it wasnt my kid, or you would be a cripple by now.

seen the same when a boss kit wasnt fitted properly - I know your case is different, but you did ask Lock your hicas, the car will handle better, you get the added bonus of weight reduction and you can just remove the light bulb from the days. I did this, much better to drive, never looked back.

Series II, good news, what mods did you have?
-
Great price, I got quoted 400 for a 180sx at my local place. Was that mates rates or standard price?
-
Weird, I had adjustable everything including front camber arms - I put them in to give more camber, as I only had around 0.5deg neg with the stock arms.

I can imagine it sold VERY quickly - someone got a bargain
