  1. Saw a dyno of the XTR3040, on Ben Ellis's car in the HPI mag - was very not impressed. Lag (EDIT: probably didnt help that he was running a 1.XX turbine AR). Also, I dont beleive garrett acutally make a 3040 - some shops just call them that to cash in on HKS turbos rep. Please correct me if I am wrong, but I have never seen a garrett catalogue that states GT3040??
  2. Nice wheels! dont want to do a swap with cash adjust do you?
  3. How many of their turbos are made in US?
  4. Have you checked the sensor is plugged in properly? Also, have you checked on the etc menu under sensor check - if a sensor is faulty it will be highlighted. If I could hear anything coming from under my bonnet I would be very very afraid. May be time for a second opinion. To just say its a faulty knock sensor, and not swap it out to make sure sounds a bit bodge to me. Dont even risk it - I was getting knock on a tune of under 190rwkw. My tuner said 'nah, its not high enough to worry about' even though it was getting up around 80-90+ regularly. I got it retuned and it never went over 40. meshmesh, why cant you get knock when you start the car?
  5. How did you snap the lock bar? thats scary
  6. Oh, and I wouldnt say HKS are THE best, just one of them:p
  7. Some good points there Roy. Just to clarify, Nino is Martin Donnon - a pen name (sorry if I am letting the cat out of the bag Martin:() Truth be told, I didnt look too closely at the photo of the engine bay, I tend to pay more attention to articles - good points about under the bonnet. Also quite possible that alot of the things they fit, they did because the stock ones werent up to the task, and they had to fit something to allow further developement - speculation of course. We are talking about jap cars here, so speculating as to what I would fit to a german or american engine is probably not so relevant. Having said that, I wouldnt overlook Jap performance turbos for any other car. Garrett are jap, and ford chose them for their XR6T. I think you summed things up nicely when you mentioned the use of Jap turbos, exactly. As you would know too well, when putting a package together, the more variables, the more places that need to be looked at when things dont go right (as invariably they do) - why make life harder on yourself? I was so glad when I fitted my HKS turbo, as when all the rest of things were done, and it wasnt doing what I wanted, all I had to do was look at what WASNT japanese made for the job and bingo - makes R&D so much cheaper for people like me with budgets. Bottom line with HKS (or any Jap performance turbo) SOMEONE does the developement - and someone must pay, the consumer. The beauty of counries with larger populations is generally the cost is less, as demand is higher. I dont think you are argueing - hopefully you dont think I am. Like you, I like to explore different opinions and look forward to having what I believe challenged:)
  8. Load is measured by the AFM or MAP sensor (whichever it uses) This is how maps are created, one axis is rpm the other load. Imagine if you are at 2000rpm down a hill, compared with 2000rpm going up a hill - you use more throttle going up the hill, as the load is higher. So both cases use the same rpm referrence, but different load referrence
  9. guys it aint rocket science - have a look and see what you can find.
  10. got through, the guy is in sydney and will be returning my call. I was also told that they are not in production yet.
  11. Easy way to get there - buy DoughBoys car, sell your car Will save you alot of money. Grepins 2835 makes an easy 280rwkw, with boost in quite early compared to GT30 or 3037. INASNT, have you posted up a copy of your dyno sheet yet? if not, why not?
  12. Jeez INASNT, I really hope you are joking.
  13. What did the mechanic say it would cost to fit one up? sounds interesting.
  14. Detonation - you dont need rpm, just load.
  15. Well done. Good to see someone not willing to just lay down and get screwed - even better when they have a win:) at a guess, the reason they didnt want it to go through is that if you managed to prove that you werent doing the alledged speed - the whole thing would have been thrown out and they would have had to start from square one again. six months will be over in no time - for now I suppose you will be spending a fair bit of time on the track:)
  16. Does the clutch engage at the top of the pedal travel? Have you checked master and slave cylinders are fully tightened in place? Checked the clutch pedal mounting under the dash? There should be enough adjust that you can stop this happening - as it sounds like the clutch isnt fully disengaging. A few things to look at anyhow.
  17. Ouch, cant be too happy, I almost cried looking at that photo. Hope the next rebuild goes a bit better.
  18. Hmm, very interesting. I think I will be giving them a ring, and perhaps experimenting. thanks for the links:)
  19. I need a phone number ASAP, I have a mate who wants to buy them but isnt a member of the forum - he has cash and can transfer to your account. Please either post it up or pm me Steve
  20. Why would Nismo use HKS? why would HKS use nismo - the whole sharing technology works both ways, so if nismo use HKS technology, they will badge it nismo and vice versa. I think you will find the N1 GTR turbos are almost identical to HKS 2530s for GTR - very, very similar (depending on housing combinations of course) the article talks of an OEM setup on the G35, if it was a HKS developemental car, it would have HSK parts all over it, it would be showcasing HKS products - what would be the point of fitting OEM looking parts if you are trying to sell HKS? the only real conclusion would be doing developement work for someone else. If you can think of a more likely reason, please let me know. But in this case its the same conclusion that Martin came up with. I am not saying Garrett turbos are no good, I am only saying that HKS turbos are not available, complete, from anywhere but HKS. And they are definately not just re-badged garrett turbos. HKS turbos are unique HKS items. Failure or no (I am not sure), Keir upgraded the turbos to larger ones in the hunt for quicker times. If trust turbos were not up to the task, why is he running them now? why is it that Keir himself told me he will only run Jap gear, as it is the best. and that there was not point stuffing around with other stuff? His results speak for themselves. I do want to reiterate, if you have the time to do the reasearch, it is possible to find very good garrett combos, that may be better suited to a specific application. But HKS turbos are unique, and for the average guy who just wants to fit a turbo and get good results, they are hard to beat IMHO. Many have tried to make their own combo and save a few dollars, but unless you have many years of experience, you will be throwing money away unless you are very lucky. Even GCG get it very, very wrong at times - and they are experts (by aust standards)
  21. Speed magazine in an article by Martin, to quote The article was talking about a 350Z HKS were developing an aftermarket turbo kit for, and a G35 coupe, that was in a developemental form, at the Kyuushu HKS factory. It was stated also that the G35 had a It was asked also to keep things low keyed with the G35 - more secrecy. why would HKS care if anybody looked at the car? why would an OEM looking turbocharged developemental car be sitting at HKS Kyuushu's factory, tucked away in a corner, and all HKS staff being very cagey about it, unless it was under developement? Obviously it was under developement. Why would a factory like HKS develope OEM looking turbo kits? well it wouldnt be for HKS to put on the shelf. an interesting article.
  22. Hmm, thanks for clearing all that up. NOT Nice research, but I dont think you quite went far enough. New cartridge ~ $1400-1500 New exhaust housing ~ $500-600 (bought over seas, in aust you will pay $880 for a HKS GT30 exhaust housing) So now we are over $2000 and we still need a new compressor housing, and compressor wheel - then we need to get the whole thing balanced. Not so cheap anymore is it. The fact that HKS use garrett CHRAs is not new - that has been common knowledge for a long time. Also, if you think the HKS2835 is laggy, perhaps you should tell grepins R33 to stop coming on boost so quick - it isnt laggy. Oh, and garrett dont make a .73, .87 or .61 for any GT30 turbo, why? because they are HKS only items - garrett have their own size housings that they make for as you put it OEM applications. I think that hit it on the head, OEM, not performance. And I must ask if you can explain, if garrett do all the turbo research, why do nissan give cars to HKS for turbo research, instead of garrett?
  23. craved, I am running a 40mm with 3037, makes 321kw at around 1.5 bar (22lbs). I have run up to 1.7bar, or down to .8 bar. It uses a 10 lb spring. the thread referred to for wastegate sizing is in the forced induction section - do a search for external wastegates and look for a thread started by SK.
  24. Joel, it may be worth taking the car to another shop and getting a quote to repair - then go and see them and tell them you want it done in a week, or else you will be going to consumer affairs/fair trading. It may also be worth getting the place you get to quote the repair to quote a full respray - may give you a bit of ammo if you need to take things further. My only concern would be if you let them fob you off for a month, they may then extend it for a customer with 'new cash'. Then it is possible you wont get the car back for weeks, as it took them a while in the first place. Very poor form, good luck. Oh and if you want a good place to go and get a quote - he does excellent work - go and see SAS paint and panel at the end of south terrace wingfield. Also, viva garage has a contact that will do a full single colour respray (tape up, not remove windows) for less than 2K - my mate had some word done there and it came up nice. I can get their details if you want good luck mate.
  25. Looking very sweet there JasonO, so when does she hit the roads?
