Look on the firewall on the drivers side, there should be a little black box (about 10cm across) with a vacuum hose going into it and a few wires, check that the hose is still connected properly first. This is where its located on the GTSt so im guessing its the same for the GTR Red17

I recently had my timing reset from the mid 20's. I had been having detonation problems in the past and on the dyno my fuel graph's were looking dangerously lean. Since i did my dump pipe at the same time i cant exactly measure the difference its made returning it to stock, however the workshop did tell me they had trouble getting it to sit at 15 degree's. Apparently it was stalling and dying when they made only mild adjustments (maybe the aftermarket management didnt help). But its all ok now. I think with australian fuel its probably most advisable to run around the standard mark unless your going to highly modify things. At least then when you do turn the boost up your less likley to get detonation. Red17

Mayhem, Mine burnt not 1, but 2. On number 6. So it seems valve issues are becoming more common on Perth's 32's. Adam, what was the condition of your spark plugs? Mine had consumed an electrode. Red17

I believe the CA18DET does not have a bov. Red17

Gearbox rebuilds are generally labour intensive and therefore expensive (I would say between $600-1000 depending on whats required). However you have little to worry about until you start noticing the gearbox not performing, eg: popping out of gears, not going into gears, crunching on changes etc. Just let it make noise until it breaks. Mines the same, my input shaft makes noise at idle and it sounds like a bunch of tin cans when in reverse. I just put up with it. Red17

Diff & Gearbox Oil........HELP!
red17 replied to phat32's topic in Suspension, braking, tyres and drivetrain
I changed my box oil yesterday to Mobil 1 Synthetic Gear Oil 75W/90. I have no idea what was in there before, but the new stuff is ALOT better. Red17 -
I know plenty of people who have crashed their bikes and not died. Thats a GROSS exaggeration. While the death rate might be higher on bikes, to say youd be lucky to come out alive is a bit melodramatic. PVA, im sure the process has been covered in the topic now, but have you thought about bike selection? Personally if i wanted to get my confidence up and get used to being out there with no metal around me, id go for something like a ZZR250. My brother started out with one and theyre great little bikes. Because its a 4 stroke you dont quite have the power on tap, but it's still 14 second 1/4 mile sorta acceleration. Way back when, my bro picked a 91 model up with low k's and immaculate condition for 3800. Probably worth about 2k now. You could go a 2 stroke, but personally, if you want to go really fast, wait until youve got your big bike permit and get yerself something with 1000cc's and a jap name on the side. Italian bikes have crap electrics.... and besides, most other bike riders will think your a wanker for riding one Then once you can do a one handed nac nac you can join up with the Perth Extremes. (BTW thats a one handed wheelie with your legoff one peg and in the air behind you ) Red17

refv, did your flywheel really make that much of a difference eh? I might have to think about purchasing one. Whats the specs on yours? Red17

I use Silkolene Dot 4. Much better performing than the regular Mobil you can buy off the shelf at big auto shops. Try motocycle shops, they usually have a very good selection of performance brake fluids like Motul, Silkolene, Belray etc.. Red17

They certainly like to ensure Transport are also overworked by sending cars back to them that dont require it. Id just like to see police officers make decent and justified judgements on the side of the road instead of biased and unsubstantiated ones. In regards to the roadworthyness of cars I mean The other thread on here about the cop asking a GTR owner to adjust his carby is a prime example. We've got a whole bunch of traffic police out there who dont know one end of a car from another. Theyre always claiming education is the key to road safety.... how about giving the poor bastards some so they can do their job better! Red17

Questions from a foreigner. Help appreciated!
red17 replied to a topic in General Automotive Discussion
The R34 was not sold by Nissan in Australia, so you cant buy them new. The only GTR ever sold new by Nissan in Oz was the R32. And only because it WHIPPED everyones arse in the Touring Car Championship. Red17 -
Red Top / Silver Top RB20DET.. How can u tell the difference?
red17 replied to sLo-32's topic in General Maintenance
RB20DET (Red top) 134kw@5600rpm 225Nm@4400rpm RB20DET (Silver top) 160kw@6400rpm 263Nm@3200rpm Listed power figures on the net. I have no idea if these are accurate. Anyone care to englighten? Red17 -
ITC = Ignition Timer Controller.... 5 knob adjustable thingy that appears to be missing from Apexi's range this year. Not sure if theyve deleted it. Is the S-AFC the blue screen one? And what the hell is an SLD? Red17

Alot of cops have been quite nice to me whenever ive been pulled over for stuff. Always tried to come across as genuine and willing to accept their advice. Usually this has proven successful. However those cops who DO pull people over and give them the old speed lecture should think twice. I'll give them the story of a certain R33 that was in my friends workshop, it belonged to an officer who decided he'd like to do a top speed run down the freeway. Engine let go at 245km/h. Give him the bloody speed lecture. If ya get caught for breaking the law then wear it, no need to be a dickhead on the side of the road and just make trouble for yourself. As for yellow stickers... some officers who claim to be experts are really kidding themselves. Ive now witnessed about 15 yellow stickers removed from vehicles that have had NO changes made to them before going over the pits. And thats just from friends and family's cars over the years. In general us "enthusiasts" know better than to drive something dangerous, we all like to drive hard on occasion which means we look after our cars for that purpose. Id much rather see some of the old bombs being taken off the road, but apparently if your 45 and have grey hair, your unsafe vehicle is no threat to anyone. Red17

Anyone entering this event? Be nice to see some Skylines in it. Im considering entry at the moment. Havent done alot of cone dodging for a while so I might be a bit rusty. I was navigating at last years and I gotta say while the 2 days were alot of fun, there was also ALOT of waiting around. I hope this year they can manage to work in some more sprints into the sometimes 2 hour gaps between runs. And $200 for a navigator who is essentially spending a weekend being ballast is too rich for most i must admit. If any of you trek out to the airport for the event, keep an eye out for an R32 with "speedworks" in massive letters on the side Check out their website at: www.classicrally.com.au Red17

Am i right in assuming that STILL no one has applied to plate R32's? Does this mean apart from the 15 year ones next year the R32 import market in Perth is pretty much dead and buried? Red17

Sensible power target for RB20 project
red17 replied to browny's topic in Engines & Forced Induction
Meggala, Yeah ive read your site a few times and was set on the VG30 turbo until you stated it seemed to shift the power alot further up the rev range. Which is exactly what i DONT want to do considering the RB20's lack of bottom end get up and go. So the R33 turbo is probably a nice comprimise considering the target ive set out for. Just need to find one thats not been molested by its previous owner. Red17 -
Sensible power target for RB20 project
red17 replied to browny's topic in Engines & Forced Induction
My target is about 250ish rwhp. Im hoping to achieve this from: 3 inch exhaust from turbo back with dump. R33 standard turbo (slightly larger than the stock RB20 one and allows you to put 14 pound through it with less stress than when its on the 2.5 litre. Theres also plenty of R33 owners trying to sell them off after upgrading.) Nice front mount... possibly an ARE. You could also consider options such as GTR coolers or Supra cores. You could go japanese brand but most seem to be HUGE and flow mega-hp. Adjustable cam gear. 14psi of boost Remap ECU. Dyno tune Ive hit 220 rwhp as it is on 14psi with a stock dump, stock turbo and stock intercooler and massive fuelling issues (relating to aftermarket ECU more than supply). So im thinking the above mods should hopefully get me around the 250 mark... maybe im being unrealistic. Red17 PS: One of the generals finest? The piazza? -
My brother has started riding his GSXR to work instead because its more economical than his 180SX.... now thats sayin something considering things like tyre wear ($400 for something decent on the rear), sprocket and chain wear (wear out quick when you spend alot of time on one wheel), servicing every 2500km and fuel guzzling 39mm mikuni flatslides with a dynojet race kit and Yoshimura pipe. And its STILL cheaper than the 180SX? God damn wars! Red17

We have both shell and mobil. They just dont sell their performance fuels. And 95 percent of mobil stations were bought out by BP years ago. So theres only a few knocking around now. Red17
-
LOL Well the only person you'll really be hurting is the BP franchisee's. Even though they make next to nothing in terms of margin on fuel, it still matters. Besides they'll have less people buying dodgy meat pies and coke from them Perth is a great city for a fuel company to establish a base. Total monopoly on fuel sales. There has been many an investigation into them price fixing and so on. But they'll sell the fuel anyway to someone whether it be wholesale or retail. Still at least you eastern staters have a second performance fuel to choose from. We HAVE to buy Ultimate98. Red17
-
I know my front support has been cut away to fit the N1 vents in. Otherwise it seems to fit fine. Had it off twice to do work on the car. Red17
-
Sounds stupid. If your in Perth especially, all fuel in Perth is made by BP. How are they going to care if you buy shell or caltex? Its simply piped up to freo and mixed with the various ingredients which make shell and caltex different. At a wholesale level its still bought from BP. Red17
-
And if its such a crazy figure why give it credit by putting it in your signature? Surely you wouldnt put it in if the dyno had read unusually low Red17

Hahaha yeah right. Born in a nissan Die in a nissan Red17
