Summary: Front Mount Intercooler Options & Piping Layouts
533 RYC replied to sl33py's topic in Engines & Forced Induction
That design is close, but no cigar! Design of the end tanks is as important as the internal core. As previously stated , the internal fin design between 'cheap chinese & expensive japanese' is vastly different & I'd trust the japanese have a much better grasp of Thermal Dynamics! That's another topic that should be researched by all intercooler swappers that want SERIOUS insight to heat exchangers. Efficiency is the key, whether it is street or race. The right intercooler for the right application is just as important as the right turbo for the right application. Bigger IS NOT better! Everyone knows what the general FMIC looks like. Most engineers with knowledge into thermal dynamics will tell you that they are not the best way to cool charged air. They cool small charged air for a long time, which leads to a greater drop in pressure. Whereas the intercoolers I have posted cool larger charged air for a shorter time, which has tends to have less pressure drop. These are all bar & plate design. Here are the pros & cons of tube & fin vs bar & plate. Tube and Fin Pros: Generally weighs about half as much as a bar and plate core of similar dimensions Generally less expensive Generally less flow restriction within the core than bar and plate designs Less flow restriction through the exterior allowing better flow to the rear of the core and to a radiator, AC condenser, tranny or oil cooler, etc. which may be behind it Cons: Those with less flow restriction than bar and plate cores offer less heat rejection Generally have more fins which means they're more likely to be damaged by rocks/debris which cuts down on cooling efficiency Charge air entry extends beyond core wall making it more difficult for air to enter the core cleanly Bar and Plate Pros: Generally off greater heat rejection than tube and fin design Those with turbulators offer even greater heat rejection Offered in tons of varying shapes and sizes Less likely to be damaged by rocks and debris Charge air entry sits flush with core allowing for cleaner entry Cons: Weighs about twice as much as a similarly size tube and fin core More expensive Blocks more airflow to radiators, etc. which may be behind it Those with turbulators have greater flow resistance to charge air Remember that there's a balancing act between cooling and airflow restriction within the core. The more densely packed turbulators are within a bar and plate core the more cooling will be done as the air passes through, but the greater flow is restricted. There are many crappy cores for sale on ebay and they are now becoming a common item at so called performance shops. In the product images they show the cores and you can see right down them because there are no turbulators present. Without these all you have is big chunk of metal with poor cooling. People are always saying the ebay ICs flow great. Sure they do, straight pipes with no restrictions do flow nicely. In terms of the core itself, some bar and plate cores use radiused ends (not end tanks) to promote flow. I made a quick drawing to illustrate this. You can see how the airflow will enter the core more readily when the ends are radiused rather than flat. Air is less likely to collide and swirl, and more likely to curve in. I made some quick drawings. Please try not to laugh. And here are some pics which illustrate what I meant when I said the charge air entries on a bar and plate sit flush with the core...and the tube and fin entries protrude: The last of my posted pictures is of an intercooler for sale by GKTECH on Ebay for Silvias. I would maybe consider it for my Stagea depending on the internal design upon inspection. All decent manufacturers/sellers, whether posting on Ebay or not, will have REAL figures of how their intercoolers perform under different boost pressures & delta T (temperature drop across the cooler at common given boost pressures), as well as boost pressure loss. I know this has complicated the 'ol intercooler swap, but, the R&D & resulting technology from automotive manufacturers & top aftermarket performance companies is very important to all of us. On my closing note, If you change your intercooler, GET IT TUNED!!! Larger intercoolers mean more airflow, whether longer pipework or not, mean leaner mixtures! Ask any top tuner!!!!!!!!!! -
Damn straight Wolverine....the only one to tune my Stagea!

RS FOUR S is hardish to find, they usually have most of the options & they were around $70-80K mark brand new, dual sunroofs, electric tailgate latch, privacy glass (all windows tint coated but the front doors & windscreen) etc.... I only have 72k on the clock & no dayz kit ( which is pretty rare for an S version!), but mine is lightning yellow, has dual sunroofs, electric tailgate, privacy glass, Black Racing 18in alloys (very hard to find aftermarket wheels), had an optioned Nissan double din head unit with sat nav & reverse sensor kit ( there's a weird looking pad like a non slip phone pad on the lower left hand steering column cover that has a speaker behind it) & it has the dealer STAGEA "A prestige touring wagon that is functional yet comfortable" body stripe, which seems very rare!! -
Scott Kerner at Insight Motorsport at Arndell Park (near Eastern Creek)! Excellent tuner & an electrical engineer to boot!! Have seen many great cars on his 4WD dyno (Dyno Dynamics from memory), including Glenn Seton's old Peter Jackson Ford Sierra RS500 touring car being tuned for a track day. Also a BA pursuit ute with an ATI Procharger punching 450+kw at the wheels on a safe street tune!!!!!!!!!! Don't know if he does Nistune, but he's an old skool Datto guy. He chipped my R32GTST spare ECU for $50!!!!!!!

I know the paint will be brighterish under the decals/stickers, I worked in the dealership industry for over 10yrs, & have seen this problem, but the new ones will go directly over where the old ones were, with tape applied along the outside lines, & with full measurements taken before the old ones are removed, which I will post up when the time comes.

What Is The Rarest Stag Part You Have Or Seen?

I have something similar, that isn't mentioned in these pages. I have the factory body stripe with"STAGEA" in it on the front guards, & up the back at the end of the stripe it says, "A PRESTIGE TOURING WAGON THAT IS FUNCTIONAL YET COMFORTABLE". They are metallic silver. Enquired at Nissan, & they are no longer availabe. They are alittle faded in some parts, seriously thinking of finding someone to do repros. Anyone else come across this option? I have started a thread on the repros subject........Check out my above pics!!!!!!!!!! -

ME Too!!!!! Top nomination for the GAYEST factory/dealer option for a Stagea ever!!!!!!!!! -
My factory Stagea body stripes are fading abit. Going on the hunt for a QUALITY business for reproductions, anyone interested? They look awesome, they break up the look of the side of the C34. They are no longer available from Nissan. They came in two colours/formats only. Light & dark (light for dark coloured vehicles, dark for light coloured vehicles). The dark ones are metallic silver (as fiited to my C34, see pic, but unsure as the light ones, as I have never seen another Stagea with them. If anyone out there has info, post it up!!!!!!

Agreed Stooge on all points especially the last two. Boot space is a premium when you throw two kids under two into the mix! As a previous RB owner, C34 RS Four S was the only option. For the money, Bomb-a-dores & Fal-coons were out of the question due to high km's & general options you don't get that come with an S. When you look at how much an optioned C34 S was brand new (around the $70 - 80K mark), Why would you buy local? My wife loved the Caldina, but settled for a Cube as an around town car!!!!!!!!!!!!
-
Absolutely awesome track car! Sounded wicked!!!! Very different engine swap too! Hope your rings held up, it started to blow some smoke there at the end! Good to see some ACT rego cars, my 533 RYC (SEE RICE, came with the car from the dealer LOL) will sadly be gone soon to ACT rego, althought I live in Syd, rego & insurace is cheaper!!!!!!!!!!

Top drifting today mate, me & the wife loved seeing it in action!!!!!!

Keen for the Wisemans run, just have to convince the missus it's a good day out for the kids!!! -
What a great day!!! Great to meet n greet afew Stagea owners. Even my 1yr old daughter loved the action! Great effort to the organizers & participants!!! Will hopefully get on the cruise next weekend. Thanks for the pics of my "SEE RYC" Wagon Boy!! LOL.

Did think seriously about reporting it, but I'd had a really crap day & didn't want to deal with the cops..........
-
Your bro is right. Dash out job, & heater cores usually run around the $800 mark new. If your going to have a crack at it yourself, get a repair manual from Ebay ($10) & read up on it, especially when it comes to airbags!!!!
-
Yeah, was just too weird for me as I was cruising the speed limit at 11pm, they stayed right up my but first time for ages (& I have QLD rego!) & I would come across them parked, half hidden, lights off etc..., def two people in it. Then I would see lights turn on the they'd haul up behind me & pass. Thought maybe the cops were trying something different as B FXR Falcon, Vic rego YRS.551 EVERYONE KEEP AN EYE OUT JUST INCASE!!!!!!!!
-
Cheers Kiwi 'N Dirty, didn't think it was a weird thing, no manufacturer would do 1.25 & 1.5, must have been done aftermarket. have ordered a set of 1.5's anyway, so I have a spare pair.......

Worked in the mechanical car industry for 10yrs, & I can tell everyone, I do as much as I can WITHOUT taking it to a workshop, even tyre changes, I just take the wheels in, alot of tyre fitters are worse than an apprentice mechanic!!!!!!! I just bought a set of "race" spec alloy wheel nuts (believe me I'm hesitant about using them), & will be checking they remain at 85ft/lbs (110nm) after every drive. My problem is that my front studs are M12x1.25, but the rears are M12x1.5.......My Stagea is a stock S2 RS FOUR S (LSD). Can anyone shed light on this (other that maybe it broke a stud or two & all that was available at the time of repair were the 1.5's before it sailed down under)?

Just Wanted Confirmation On Clutch For Rs4 S
533 RYC replied to sturb25's topic in Four Door Family & Wagoneers
5,000RPM, 7,000RPM dumps.........geez guys, no wonder there is clutch slippage, gotta expect that with that sort of load!!!!!! Hey Darrin, ever broken an input shaft with that sort of clamping pressure?? -
Silver C34 S2 RS FOUR with P plate saturday morning on Stafford St Penriff, then spotted white one, COP.003 parked on Jamison Rd as I lapped the block before my day turned to crap! Must have been a big target over my Stagea for idiots. Got road raged by a guy in a Falcon ute who was swerving at me while I was in the lane next to him. Then thought I'd have a nice quiet (speed limit!!!!) drive up the Bells to Lithgow tonight & some IDIOT in a new Falcon would overtake me (on yellow lines), speed up, slow down, then take off & hide, then do it all again once I'd passed, so I went home...............Time to leave it garaged for another week & hope all the idiots are well & truely out of town next weekend!!!!!!!

Autech M35 turning right off Old Windsor Rd into Powers Rd around 9.30am, I was in my work truck. Then, custom MNP S2 turning right off Vardy's Rd onto Sunnyholt around 4.45pm, I was in the Chararri......

Really, thought mine was the only one with the stripe! Mine's silver. Spotted Black S2 with R34 front (dunno if it was a Masa kit) on Conrad Rd Kellyville around 4pm.
