FYP I'm not sure of the volume this area has, but would there still be space/lane size issues between cyclists given the large volume? What happens when the recreational hippy rider is dawdling along at 5kph & gets collected by a slipstreamer doing 30kph? They both have the right to be there.......

Have you cleaned out the AAC valve???

I'm not really in a hurry to sell, I'd park it for a SERIOUS buyer........

A rego system would have to be developed through consultation with all cycling groups & lobbys. There needs to be standards in place, not just education, to aid in minimizing the risk to cyclists. Bicycles should have to meet a minimum roadworthiness (forget brakelights & indicators) for a bike to be on the road, just like any other road going vehicle. If a car has bald tyres or semi slicks/track tyres fitted they get fined. Bikes should also have tyre regulations in place, because as with a car, truck or bike, the only thing keeping you in contact with the road is the tyre.

There are always another few questions in the back of my mind: 1: Build quality - what, if any standard/ADR's are complied with? 2: Assembly quality - The average enthusiast putting it together? In the even of a serious accident, do crash investigators look at the structural integrity of the bike & more importantly, grip levels of tyres fitted? Now we all know what type of tyres are used on halfway decent bikes being pedalled that are capable of 30+ kph. You only have to watch the ride around frogland & you will see plenty of riders go down for no apparent reason whatsoever. Who polices the grip level road cyclists have? How many have gone down in traffic? if a driver doing the right thing runs over a cyclist due to a fall from insufficient grip, will all the cyclists cry foul that he wasn't given enough room, even though TECHNICALLY his bike should never have been on the road? Why is the grip level of a bike involved in a crash never mentioned?? Before anyone hacks me to death, I club raced for 7 years & used to train on the open road........

Well you must be the 0.4% they do anything about.

*SIGH* It happened again this morning. I was waiting to turn westbound onto the M4 from Wallgrove Rd. An old guy on a pushy was heading northbound towards me on Wallgrove rd. Lights changed, he slowed down, we turned on our green arrow & then, you guessed it, he continued on through his red light.

ROFFLOL! This statement is the best laugh & the biggest piece of UTTER BULLSHIT in this entire thread! The police cant even pull over a damn car doing the wrong thing! Don't make me list every time I've seen a police car present when someone in a car has broken the law & they've sweet FA about it! The only time a copper is going to give a shit about someone on a bike doing the wrong thing, is when they are on a bike as well. Be realistic!

LOL Dale, where do you find this Shiite? I think your buddies would have more fun on two of these!

Thanks JOC, you started an invaluable service. It's a shame that so many authorities turn a blind eye to what essentially is a criminal act of international proportions! That's exactly where the problem lies I think. It's too hard to prosecute for what is considered to be a lower end of the scale crime. When it is done on a large scale though, that's the game changer! -
Sorry Dale, I should have been more specific. I was thinking about the south part, past the Glenmore Parkway. It can be twisty & abit hair raising for a cyclist, with garbage trucks & Hr's with a trailers rumbling past doing 100. I was using that scenario as an example for Sydney siders who might know it vs many much hairier roads in Canberra I used to train on.
-
I agree Dale. I stand by this & I hope SOMEBODY pitches this to the NSW Government as the first SERIOUS means to IMPROVE SAFETY on our roads!
-
Mick, I agree with the main & secondary motive behind what you said: 1: PUT YOUR OWN SAFETY FIRST! What is it worth? 2: Cyclists where they shouldn't be. Riding the white line on Mulgoa Rd. Most motorways/freeways, cyclists are banned, that's why there are warning signs. It's the differential in speed that is the factor. There aren't too many places in big cities where racers/recreational riders can train at the uninterrupted pace for the distance that they need to. I don't know, there are many ways this can go. I've been on both sides of the spectrum in this argument, & I lean myself to each side. When I used to train on major & minor roads (some very dangerous to cyclists) at home in Canberra, I used to cringe & tense up at the sound of a truck or fast sounding car & wait for the shock wave of them going past as they pushed the air out of the way, BUT I KNEW REALISTICALLY I WAS SOMEWHERE I SHOULDN'T HAVE BEEN.

I was RBT'd once on my pushie Terry. I passed, laughed & jokingly asked if they would take my front wheel out if I failed. The response wasn't what I was expecting!

Whilst it is legal to ride a bicycle in a lane, it should be illegal to ride two abreast (side by side), as it is for motorcycles. Not sure if it's law, but it should be. Everyone has the right to use the road, we all need to share it. To say it's the cars & trucks fault is not really fair. When you throw peak hour into the mix, frustration after a hard day & narrow streets, things happen, there is a lot going on. It happens every day between drivers, so at some stage, it's going to happen to a cyclist. NOBODY IS PERFECT! Now, I know I'm lining myself up for the firing squad, but I believe every driver, regardless of age or driving experience should have to sit a refresher theory test every 5 years, at the time of licence renewal or when transferring from interstate. The amount of stupid, idiotic people, operating all forms of transport, don't seem to understand the rules. Question: When did anyone on here, who has held a licence for 5 years or more, check with RMS whether there have been any rule changes? I know I haven't...

When I was doing my license, cyclists had to dismount before using a pedestrian (zebra) crossing, if they didn't, legally you didn't have to stop! I very clearly remember this rule as it was very surprising. Dunno if it's still the same though. I wonder what those bastards the Pedestrian Association thinks of all this? Will they want a demerit point system to apply to bicyclists???
-
Lol, oh Dave, I do agree with the bit about over population. One part of Darwin's theory will get us, however, I don't think it will be survival of the fittest!
-
^ What Ravi said! At home in Canberra, they put in bike lanes on all major roads, which meant completely redesigning the slip lanes onto major roads so cars have to stop. In the Netherlands they have heaps of cycle lanes on major roads, & get this, at traffic lights, they get to have their own turn! They've made provisions for cyclists at traffic lights like pedestrians have! We admittedly don't have the volume of cyclists here, but its a good idea.
-
I agree with both sides of the argument. I club raced for years, My family background has cycle racing going back 4 generations. I'm ALWAYS very aware of cyclists (& motorcyclists for that matter, as I ride them too) & have blasted & abused quite a few other motorists for not giving way &/or enough room for a cyclist. But, as road users who are ENTITLED, as Dale stated, to have full use of a lane, they should follow road rules. I retract parts of my previous statement. If they bring it in, not everyone will follow it & how do you police it? Employ 20,000 Bicycle mounted police across the state? I don't think so........ The biggest thing I hate is ANY mode of transport running red lights. I was shocked when I first moved to Sydney. In Sydney, a red light means 3 more cars can get through. All motorists need to clean their act up,& the police need to crack down on it. I've seen police be in a position to book people, but they turn a blind eye to it. IT SUCKS!

Awesome!

A bit off topic, but, I had a 'discussion' with a boy in blue one day about petrol powered pushies. His response was that any mode of transport that has to be powered by anything other than a person must be compliant with ADR, pass a vehicle inspection & be registered. He had nothing to say when I asked him whether that includes old people on electric mobility scooters. I agree with bicylists who regularly use the road to pay a one off fee for a registration vest. The amount of them that run red lights put themselves, pedestrians & drivers at risk. A lot of drivers these days have dash cams, when they have footage & be able to identify offenders, police could help prevent future accidents. For recreational bicylists, who don't use the road, they shouldn't have to pay a fee.

Would have been nice to get a spot next to this yesterday!
