Rd 3 report What a fantastic weekend!! From the perfect weather to the fiercely competitive drivers and the frighteningly fast track layout, drifting has definitely found its footing at Adelaide Raceway. As in Round 2, the top class qualifiers for the day were Tony Harrison (Marshall Tyres Commodore) and Leighton Fine (Yellow AE86) with solid performances geared to the judges requests of feint entries and use of full width of the track. Team Drifting again was a hit, with the all AE86 clan – Team Cheese - strutting their stuff with good proximity. From watching the 8 teams that entered this segment, it has become evident that good drivers don’t necessarily make good teams! A new feature introduced for this round was the Driftkhana, which was an absolute hit with drivers and spectators. The aim of Driftkhana is to navigate around short course made of cones in the quickest time – all while never attaining rear wheel traction!! Darren Appleton took the win here in his Nissan Laurel, although the next 8 drivers were less than 2 seconds behind!! Sunday brought the finalists together to see who would be the ultimate champion. A quick practice session saw most drivers only take a few laps as many were concerned with excessive tyre wear. Team Drifting was easily won by Team Cheese, although Simon Michelmore made 2 errors in their 1st 2 laps, the overall drifting ability finally came together on the 3rd lap. Simon along with Leighton Fine, Ben Cumming and Joel Fitzgerald will hopefully continue the all AE86 theme of Team Cheese in future events. Street Class battles were dominated by the top qualifiers with the exception of Chris DeJagger who was knocked out in the first round after a spin. His huge feint entries on Day 1 had earned him a top 4 qualifying spot coming into the battles. Darren Appleton managed to blow a FRONT tyre in his battle for 3rd place, so he retired to 4th behind Grant Frencham who finished 3rd. The final street battle of the day belonged to the 1st and 3rd place qualifiers, both in AE86’s, both hometown favourites, both from Team Cheese!! Leighton Fine and Simon Michelmore know each other’s driving styles back to front, and so close racing is always expected with these two. On this occasion Simon pushed too hard coming into the hairpin left, and looped and looped and looped to the cheers of the judges. Leighton was faultlessly consistant all weekend, as he has been since Round 1. He has run away with championship points with three wins but mathematically he can be reeled in by the end of Round 5. Pro Class saw James Mardle qualify 2nd between regular drivers such as James Vahoumis, Tony Harrison and Mick Tyler. The first round of battles saw Christian Pickering and Adam Trawhella sent back for TWO reruns, with Trawhella the eventual winner to the delight of the W.A. fan club in the stands. Tony Harrison made an early exit against George Spartalis after a spin while chasing. The second round of battles pitted points leaders Jerome Kennedy against James Vahoumis. An inside pass by Kennedy at the hairpin on the first lap put the pressure on, however technical problems from the D1 Garage car saw Vahoumis retire before he could complete another lap. A surprised Adam Trawhella found himself in the final against local driver James Mardle. The first lap saw very close racing with an even points distribution awarded to both drivers. In the second lap Mardle failed to use the full width of the track in the link between the esses and the hairpin, while Trawhella did so without losing spacing, giving him the points advantage by the narrowest of margins. Following presentations the Toyo Expression Session again lived up to its reputation as THE BEST drifting ever seen in Australia. For this segment the fabled AIR “bowl” was opened up giving drivers a 270 degrees of nascar like banked road to shred the last of their tyres. Sent out in quick succession, and only open to the Sunday finalists, this means that reasonably skilled drivers give an awesome show to those who stay to see the best. Channel 10 are unsure of how this sport will be accepted by the public, and if they don't receive a positive reaction, it will be a long time before we see it on Ch 10 again (which as we all know, is the "home of motorsport" hehe). So what we are asking of everyone here is if you watch Channel 10 News Channel 10 (5:35pm Thurs 21/4), Sports Tonight (Ch 10, 11pm Thurs, 21/4) or Trackside (Ch 10, 1pm Sunday, 24/4 - particularly the last half), and if you like what you see give channel 10 a call and let them know what you think, and that you would like to see more of it.
