Private imports, any one familiar with this process?
saff_cossie replied to usuckpoo's topic in General Automotive Discussion
The legislation is continually being revised so it could be that it has changed. I bought mine in back in September and I know bits changed several times whilst mine was on the boat. Do as GTR V says and chat to someone in a compliance shop or email DOTARS. I emailed DOTARS a fair bit prior to mine coming in and they are really helpful. Address is something like [email protected] -
That is really cool. I take it the Porsche is a track car then.

does owning a sports car bring problems ?
saff_cossie replied to skylinedrifter's topic in General Automotive Discussion
Depends what the sports car is. A 2 door coupe may draw attention but mine didnt get me pulled over. Yes they can be expensive for a few reasons in my experience: Parts can be pricey especially on an imported vehicle Insurance due to previous statistics i.e lots of thefts, claims etc If you buy a sports car, most people at some point will have driven it something like that. I dont mean racing but maybe some harder gear changes, heavier braking etc. That can be costly if things start going wrong. -
Private imports, any one familiar with this process?
saff_cossie replied to usuckpoo's topic in General Automotive Discussion
I have never heard anything about imports having to be stock. Mine was modified when it came over. I have a friend bringing in a heavily modifed car as a personal import at the moment so there doesnt seem to be a restriction, just that it has to meet the ADR's here eventually to be signed off. Manual Lexus are available here anyway so wouldnt see that as a problem and not sure what the other thing is! The tests for a Private Import are more leanient than for a 15 year import anyway. -
Number plates removed. After all that I only have a couple of decent ish ones anyway!
-
I got a few of some cars if anyone wants me to post them and doesnt have a problem with plates being displayed?
-
Thanks people for the new posts. I have decided to opt for something a bit more tame for the moment so have gone down the path of a Lexus. I can get insured on that for $690 which I am happy about. I will hopefully do a few things with that and then look at a skyline later in the year when my insurance comes up for renewal. Feel free to keep the suggestions coming especially if it helps others. Cheers for the advice though guys and girls, appreciated.

AzzurrA that was what I did end up doing as I needed a car this week and it left me no choice. It killed me doing it but I will get another in a few years and get everything done in the UK as its no good relying on people to do it. Will make a fantastic car for someone with the time to get it complied. Sad day but look to the future

Seems your question has been answered but here it is from my experience when I did it. Stuck car on Ship in the UK. Paperwork posted to me in Aus. Shipping company made contact with me confirming the arrival date as it was only an ETA on the paperwork posted over. My broker who I knew personally kept me up to date so here is happened with him: The broker had to book a time to collect the container (which wasnt opened). There is only about a 48hour window to collect it in otherwise it goes off to storage and incurrs hefty fees. The take it to AQIS who do not know you from Adam so have to go through your broker as well. AQIS were not allowed to open it until I was there (I wanted to check everything was intact and nothing missing incase of an insurance claim) AQIS unpack it and inspect everything (in my case the car was packed full of personal belongings so they went through everything) AQIS normally take a couple of days to do this, they then inform the broker. I paid my fee to the broker including all taxes as they have already paid on my behalf to AQIS. Once all is cleared financially, I arranged a flat bed to pick the car up and take it to compliance. Job done. Well just about! About 7 weeks later I recieved another invoice for $80 from my broker who had in turn been invoiced by AQIS for "Addtional Quarantine Fees". This was crap and I argued it with them as for all they knew I could have moved house, left the country. HTH

Who can import me a 350Z?
saff_cossie replied to |PRESA|'s topic in Importing, Compliance, Modification Laws & Regulations
I looked into all this with importing a car from the UK. I also corresponded with a couple of people at DOTARS and I second what Predator says. It is virtually impossible to abuse the system but even if you have the option to, its not worth it for it could make it harder in the future for your fellow Japanese car owners revise legislation as a result. My advice for a legit import, go and live in Japan for over 12 months and then bring the car in that way as from my understanding that is the legal way. Having said that, I am not sure on Aus released cars if that is correct but maybe someone else on here knows. -
Sadly now sold

I have found a nice IS200 so was looking at the kits for that. Not a fan of the rear spoiler that they do but like the rest of the bits. Groundrun - you are right about the price!

Thanks guys, will have a look.

Hi guys Does anyone know of C West retailer in Australia? I haev hunted through google but not found any. If there is someone, can the contact details for them be posted please. Thanks in advance

beefy - dont have the R34 yet and at this rate might have to wait another year until I am 25. Just cars probably would insure me but I have several different policies with RACV and they have been very good with discounts etc.
-
Dreamer 33 - Imported it myself as it was my car in the UK. I like the every other young person have had insurance trouble with quotes on cars but thought I was virtually past all that, seems not with some companies. Anyway got a quote from RACV on an Integra Type R 2000 model. They will insure that and for $500 extra on my current premium. Could be the way to go.

Thanks guys for all the replies. SS8_Gohan - may have to take the option. They insure my girlfriends RX Liberty and said alloys and exhaust are fine if they are put on but the wheels must not exceed 7"?! I assume that is width but goes with what you are saying as well. I didnt really want to have to change companies as I have only just taken the policy out. Its $1000 fully comp for the cossie which I am not complaining about at all!

Hi all Following on from my post about buying an R34, I thought it might be an idea to see who would insure it. I assumed someone like RACV would but apparently not! I called them and they wont touch R33, R34, Silvia or WRX but do currently insure my 270bhp cossie! I am a rating 1 driver but that made no difference, it is the cars themselves. Short of driving a lada (no offence Jamezilla!), what performance vehicle can I drive and get insured on? Any suggestions appreciated guys and girls.

Thanks for the replies girls!

I know the first post says all are welcome but I dont see many people mentioning girlfriends. Is this more of a lads day or do I see if the girlfriend wants to come? She came to one before for a Ford group but there wasnt one other girl!

Thanks for all the replies guys. I need one ASAP really once the cossie is sold. I do IT work and have to get to clients and my car on an unregistered permit isnt really on! Would still be awesome to see yours SS8_Gohan and Snowman I may take you up on the offer! I will do a search of the ACT forum in a bit and see what I can dig up. Not desperatly after a drive or anything but just to see some R34's in the flesh would be good. Cheers all for the help and any other suggestions comments are welcomed Have been looking at Supras but really want a car 97 onwards and there dont seem to be too many of them.

Hi all I have decided to sell the cossie and venture into most likely Skyline territory. I have owned this car for 7 months and bought it over from the UK myself when I emmigrated. It isnt yet fully complied but does have some of the bits done and includes other bits. If anyone is genuinely interested PM me for more details. I am looking for $21,000 ono and will consider Skyline PX. The car currently has a stage 1 chip so puts out around 280bhp. It is a 5 speed manual and is the blue one in my siggy. The engine has low K's and the car uses very little oil. Would probably suit an enthusiast but thought I would try on here anyway. I have other pics if anyone is interested. Contact email is: [email protected] and location can be seen in my profile which is Melbourne.

calvintys - thanks for the reply mate. They are good points. I had a look at the S15 and they look good with some of the Japanese kits on but my girlfriend isnt really a fan! She prefers the Skyline which is fine with me! I am selling the cossie reluctantly but have been weighing up the Skyline (personal favourite), FTO and WRX. We already have a Subaru so probably avoid that one. I like the R33 but prefer the lines of the R34 and they seem to be well priced at the moment. riggap and KamikazeR33 thanks also for the replies. It seems a GTT is the way to go as I dont have the $80K upwards to spend. Cheers for all the replies guys Anymore for anymore?

So am I right in thinking the spec levels go: GTT, GTR, GTR V-Spec? Persumably there is something below the GTT though?
