355GTS replied to toy515's topic in For Sale (Private Car Parts and Accessories)
Ill take the r33 gtr ,power steering pump please. Pm me price delivered to cowes victoria 3922. Will arrange payment with u after that. Cheers -
Why are the gods so cruel??

Mine has the hicas locked out as well. I wonder what the system is really trying to do under heavy load with 4wd engaged....... I am definately going to install temp and pressure sensors to this system and give it proper monitoring under track loads. This will tell us the answer I am sure. Probably going to need something for datalogging now....ff$$$$$sake. LOL.

Is that cooler mounted front passanger side in front of oil cooler? Or is it in front of radiator? I will follow this setup I think Paul.

Great feedback guys. After consideration my way forward is: 1. Upgrade pump to reconditioned R33 pump. Lighter I am told. 2. Install PS cooler. What size do u recommend? Similar to RPM oil cooler size? 3. Recondition PS rack. Just because it hasnt been touched since I owned it. 4. Tight belts. Monitor on first shakedown at PI. Adjust if necessary. 5. Consider installing a temperature transmitter in PS system to monitor track day temps. Have I missed anything?

Roy, you mean to say that I put mega dollars into a racepace built car and it goes to the track with loose belts? Loose belts are usually obvious with noise. I am confident that is not the issue having pulled the motor my self I would have noticed as well. Roy, is your car always light on the steering no what how hard the 4wd system is working? Interested to know this.
-
Yes mine get heavy for no apparant reason. Some times it is like u have to wrestle the car at PI. I am definately going to do something funky. At the very least an mr2 electric hydraulic pump plumbed into the system. Maybe a full electric servo system like epas. This looks to require a whole new manual rack though.

Epas Power Steering Kit
355GTS replied to 355GTS's topic in Suspension, braking, tyres and drivetrain
LOL at the custard!!!!! I Didnt think of it in those terms. I noticed the bc auto car replaced his factory pump with a merc electric pump successfully. That gave me inspiration to do the same. Then when looking for a elec pump I stumbled on this. I dont have an opinion on it having never experienced it. Perhaps a simple electric hydraulic pump exchange is best? -
take her to PI paul. Cant wait to see your time there!!!!
-
Paul did u retain factory power steering? I am looking at a EPAS electric kit for my build.....any thoughts? Do u find the steering really heavy when tracking the car and the front wheel drive is engaged. Almost to the point of being exhausting after five or six laps at pi? Thinking the epas kit will strip a fair bit of weight and maybe give me a better overall steering package? What do you recon?
-
Hey all, anyone fitted one of these EPAS kits to their GTR? I am going to get rid of my r32 ps pump. I couldnt believe how heavy it was when i pulled the motor out. Looking at how else to optimise the power steering system. Any feedback on how good they work? How easy to setup for racing purposes? Issues with front wheel drive? http://www.ultimatepowersteering.com.au/electric-power-assisted-steering-epas-1/ cheers

Next I set to work planning out the custom jig pieces I will need to brace the car. Strut tower jigs were made first. I will get more photos of these next time I am home. I will show the fitted up strut tower support and chassis rail support. -

Not I checked the vertical baseline datum "0" point. I set the height of the chassis rails so that the top of this steel square tube represented the "0" reference point. I have two of these steel cross tubes on the jig. one front and one rear for reference purposes. I have marked up this chassis plan to show what I am refering to as the zero datum for height (x-axis) measurements. -

Here I have installed the car onto the four point holding system and removed the jack stands and timber I used to raise the car up. The car is now solely on the car bench and anchored in four positions. Next I need to look at designing the jig pieces required to secure the front end chassis rails and strut towers. These jigs need to be strong enough to ensure that the strut towers and chassis rails AFT of the engine mounts cannot move or be bent out of spec when I start the pulling/striaghtening process. I have measured the location of the strut towers and they are in spec(+/-2mm) according to the Nissan Frame Plan. I have measured the chassis rails behind the fire wall and they are in spec. I have measured the chassis rails AFT of the engine mounts and these are no more than 3mm out of spec. The chassis rails FWD of the engine mounts on both sides are way out spec in mulitple axis. See next photos of the horror story. Front Passanger Side Rail Front Driver Side Rail I took the paint off and some of the inside metal lining in the boot to allow access. the upper dents and creases are going ok. They still need heaps of work but its a good start. -

So first I had to raise the car high enough to get the CARBENCH underneath. This took a little bit of patience and care but I got it done in an evening safely. The bench went under and then I realised how bad the SIL RAILS were. They were so bad in fact that I could not mount the car to the Four point mounting system which clamps to the SIL Rails. So I spent about two evenings with 10lb hammer, T-dollies and also a slide dolly bashing them backinto some sort of squareness. I got it done and got the car mounted on the four point holding system. -

Oh...my....we have some work to do here. You can see the side panel is well creased. The very end of the rear chassis rail is also slighlytly bent downwards. -

This is a "snake" hydraulic spreader tool. It can be placed into hard to get places to allow the spreading apart of metal from the inside. -

This is the CARBENCH JIG I purchased off the Nissan Motorsport Team (Kelly Bros). $1100 for the lot. Great value I think. I have had to purchase a few extra add on items to support the use of the bench. these are the next photos. Several different clamps which are used with the pulling towers. There is one that bolts to the bottom of the chassis rail and another that clamps to the front of the chassis rail. Others that allow you clamp onto different connections to allow different angle pulling. -

Here is the new intercooler I purchased. Much larger than the previous. I am hoping to extract a lot more power out this motor so I am sure it will be needed in the heat of the Phillip Island Summer! -

Yes Paul, Space frame is definately on the agenda for some parts of the car. Will see how the chassis striaghten goes first. then decide whats best after that.
