sorry if this is in the wrong section or if this seems like a pointless topic but its not...........

i have an r32 gtr with i think r33 brembo disks and calipers, my current wheels are work cr emotions 17x9's front and back with an off set of +17, i find that i get vibration through the steering wheel or steering wheel shakes.........could the off set be a possible cause??

i was looking at just getting some cheaper 17 or 18 by 9's are there any new rims around that look decent and wont cost a fortune?

my only concern with my rims is the off set...........can any one give me some insight into if they are worth keeping on or not???

thanks

Offsets in themselves cause shudder. It might cause tramlining and change the steering response because you're changing the track and the net suspension geometry, but if the wheels are in good condition to my knowledge it shouldn't shudder.

And the rim widths offsets you've given aren't completely different to other GT-R owners, or otherwise we'd all know about it.

In what conditions are you getting the shudder?

If its only under brakes, it could be warped discs and a light machining should fix it.

If its all the time, then have the wheel condition, balance and alignment checked.

But don't buy cheap wheels. They're heavy, which ruins the performance, and they're generally softer so they're more likely to buckle on you...which means you'll get the shudder again.

Thanks guys I have had the wheels balanced and aligned 2 times, the wheels are not bent or warped at all and are all true

The suspension im running is new koni adjustable shocks, and shorter springs, all bushes and suspension components are newish

It only happens when I hit around 100km other wise its not there………..pretty much as soon as I hit 100kmh it start to shake

What other things can cause this??? unbalanced Drive shaft?? 4ws?

its starting to get annoying cause as you konw these things start to become alive at around 100clicks

thanks again

My experience has been that 100+ kph vibration is ALWAYS balance. The first thing I do is swap the front and rear wheels. If the vibration moves from front to rear or changes in frequency then its wheel balance. A lot of tyre shops just balance the wheels on the inside. Skylines (4wd's in particular) need the wheels balanced both inside and out because of the wheel width. Check and make sure yours has weights on both the inside and the outside of the rim. If it doesn't then I would suggest going back to the tyre shop and asking them to check the inner and outer balance.

:P cheers :)

also check if the wheels need those little metal seat thingys that centre the wheel on the hub.......mine didnt have these and they were fine with the old tyres but as soon as i got new ones they were vibrating like hell at about 80kms p/hr.

i dont know exactly what the name of them is but they basically centre the wheel nice and solid to the hub ......

good way to check take all the bolts off and if u can jiggle the wheel on the hub then u probably need the seat things.

"HUB RINGS"

When you remove the rim, in the middle of the disks/studs there is a circular lip. If the diameter of this lip is smaller than the diameter in the rims, then the wheel can move off centre, causing it to vibrate.

If you need a good wheel place, i highly recommend Bob Jane T-mart, at Watergardens S/C. Speak to Mark and ask him to check if you need a set of hub rings on your rims. I just got a set for my rims (my rings are plastic). They also ballance the inner and outer of the rims :)
