hey guys i have done quite a bit of research... especially reading past threads..

i thought i would quickly check with yall first...

i have a 33 with ems cooler exhaust new turbo manifold etc..

and want to upgrade my turbo... i have decided on a Garrett gt3071 with .63 exhaust and with an internal wastegate....

does this all sound like a good setup ?

A GT3071R , (real one has 84T 60mm GT30 turbine + 56T 71mm GT35 Comp = CHRA No 700177-23) would not be the most responsive thing on an RB20 . Works better on 2L four ie 4 ~ 500 cc pots .

The HKS GT2835 Pro S in .68 a/r turbine housing would be a little better with its smaller 52 trim compressor but the kit is not cheap .

All in all I reckon a std (ceramic BB) turbo Hi flowed like GCG's or a model specific HKS GT2530 sounds good for the road . You can go bigger but its getting not nice for a street car at typical street car revs .

Hay guys I have a GT3071R with a 0.63 turbine hsg on it. I have not installed it yet due to Christmas and New Year but will be hopefully on in about 2-3 months so if you can wait till them I will pm you with how it goes.

I have pm'ed discopotato03 about this turbo set up before and he mentioned that is was very similar to the GT2835. Please correct me if I am wrong?

A few people I have talked to that had them on there RB20s made 240rwkw and had full boost by 4000rpm so on a RB25 it will hopefully be around 3500rpm with a good tune.

Similar to a 2835 in that it has the same series of turbine and compressor wheels .

ALL of the GT2835 HKS's and GT3071R's are GT30 turbine based turbos , ALL of them use 71mm GT35 (BCI-18 series) compressors . The turbine is cropped in all of them except the propper GT3071R cartridge 700177-0023 .

Most of the HKS GT2835 series use the 52 Trim compressor though I have a table of HKS turbos that shows a 48 Trim compressor version rated at 380ps . 52T rated at 400ps , the 56T 410ps and the 56T Pro S at 420ps .

Garrett has a bad habit of only offering the largest trim compressor version in the turbos they market .

CHRA's

700177-0002 Cropped Turbine 84T + 52T comp

700177-0003 Cropped Turbine 84T + 56T comp

700177-0004 Cropped Turbine 90T + 56T comp

700177-0023 Uncut !!! Turbine 84T + 56T comp

I suspect the 48 trim compressor version is 700177-0001 but unconfirmed .

The middle two of the list above are what Garrett is fobbing off as "GT3071R WG or wastegated " . You are getting ripped off big time if you buy them or any of the HKS GT2835 series with the T28 flanged GT28 integral gate exhaust housings as the combination of GT28 housing and GT30 based turbine is a flop .

Also to save confusion , you will notice the first three have a cropped version of the GT30 UHP (Ultra High Pressure Ratio) turbine . Its major diameter is 56.6mm where the uncut version is 59.9mm . So the 84 and 90 trim versions of the first three are based on a smaller diameter than the last which is an 84 trim 59.9mm .

HKS/Garrett turbo unit numbers for the above cartridges or CHRA's

700177-0002 = 700382-0002 , 700382-0006 , 700382-0018

700177-0003 = 700382-0003 , 700382-0007 , 700382-0019 , 700382-0024

700177-0004 = 700382-0004 , 700382-0020 , 700382-0021

Turbo unit numbers vary because of differences in turbine and compressor housing style and a/r .

The last one (-23) is only sold by Garrett as a cartridge that you can select a number of housing options for . ATP Turbo (US) sell them as a unit with .63/.82/1.06 a/r GT30 turbine housings + .50 a/r TO4E compressor covers .

"The exhaust housing's I am offering have a T03 foot print and are cast by Precision Turbo's in the US. They use a Ford style T03 internal wastegate set up but are a proper GT housings"

i believe the housing was coming from a Qld Turbo supplier.

perhaps there is an option internally gated with the 60mm turbine.

ps. don't panic if you don't understand the above info. i have been getting my head around this info over a period of time, with a lot of patient help from disco. there are lots of threads that relate to the 'real' GT3071R' if you do a search you will find them pretty easily.

I totally agree...

Step 1 is the hardest part...

I have to say tho choosing a turbo is alot like making a sandwich. I mean first there is the filling (size of compessor and turbine) then you got the sauce (housing sizes) salt & pepper (flange type) then the type of bread (brand of turbo)....

I get so confused some times that i reckon ill stick to sandwich's cause they make me happy too. ;)

But seriouslly i have been tossing up inbetween keeping the high flow i already got or a GT30 style Garret unit (probablly a .82 rear housing and a .7 front housing with an external wastegate setup) But yeah changing all the exhaust manifolds makes me also check out the GT turbines from HKS as their bolt on....

I guess for the cost tho you could get a full garrett setup for the same price as a HKS turbo....

i have an rb20 and put a gt-rs turbo on (400ps) internal wastegate.

full boost at 3500rpm with standard computer, mainifolds and blowoff valve.

great up grade but costly

around $3,500

what sort of hp you after.

mainly for street or drag racing.

thats exactly right - GCG highflow is the most cheapest upgrade ($2k) and it bolts straight back on, no adjustment to oil or water lines.

2530, you'll be spending $300 on oil and water lines, and lots of time and stuffing around... I've been there and done that, pain in the ass.

If I could do it again, I'd get a high flow. But, I can't do it again..

    • Pretty much what you'd expect at that power level. Hypergear turbo, long list of supporting mods, full Haltech catalogue, etc.  I'd say this goes for most drivers, suspension is still a dark art for most people. And it's really hard to convince someone how much better their setup could be...  
    • They are what I will be installing. 640s for me.
    • Hmm... From my experience you get about 0.25° camber change per mm of RUCA length change. So, to correct from -2.5 up to less than -1° (or, more than -1° if you look at the world as a mathematician does) then you'd be making 6-8mm of length change on the RUCA. From a stock length of 308mm, that's 2-2.5% difference in RUCA length. My RUCAs are currently very close to stock length - certainly only 2-3mm different from stock. I had to adjust my tension arms by 6mm to minimise the bump steer. That's 6mm out of 210, which is 2.8%. That's a 2.8% change on those, compared to a <1% change on the RUCAs. So the stock geometry already has worse bump steer than is possible - you can improve it even if you don't change the RUCA length. If you lengthen the RUCAs at all, then you will definitely be adding bump steer. Again, with my car, I recently had an unpleasant amount of bump steer, stemming from a number of things that happened one after another without me having an opportunity to correct for them. I only had to change the tension arm lengths by 1mm to minimise the resulting bump steer. (Granted, I also had to dial out a lot of extra toe-in in the rear, and excessive rear toe-in will make bump steer behaviour worse). Relatively tiny little adjustments having been made - the car is now completely different. Was horrifying how much it wanted to steer from the rear on any significant single wheel bump/dip. And it was even bad on expansion joints on long sweepers on freeway entry/exits, which are notionally hitting both rear wheels at the same time. My point is, the crappy Nissan multilink is quite sensitive to these things (unlike the very nice Toyota suspension!). And I think 99.75% of Skyline owners are blissfully ignorant of what they are driving around on. Sadly, it is a non-trivial exercise to set up to measure and correct bump steer. I am happy to show my rig, which involves nasty chunks of wood bolted to the hub, mirrors, lasers, graph paper targets and other horrors. Just in case anyone wants to see how it is done. I'll just have to set it up to take the photos.
    • What do you have in that bad boy ? Ill go with the 725cc since I'll be going with Nistune ( would definitely like more engine protection but Haltech is too far out of reach at the moment... plus, Ill probably have a pretty safe tune as its a daily, not gonna be chasing peak power 24/7 ahahah ). Are Xspurt a safe choice?  Pete's great. He didnt mention anything about traction arm length so I reckon it may be good. When I get some new wheels/tire later down the road I'll ask him about it and get his opinion on em. I heard from Gary that you've got the bilsteins too, are you running the sway bars too? and what other suspension goodies do you have installed or would recommend?
