Yeah before i set my boost to 12 psi,i drove around with a fmic but with stock boost.I noticed there was a different in flow and my car drives smoother.(maybe its what type of cooler u choose,tube&fin or bar&plate).Not advisable to run more than 12 psi with the stock turbo.I think 12 psi is the optimum boost level for it anyway(correct me if im wrong).Hi flowing isnt a bad idea i guess?

Yeah I had this set-up but I also installed a boost controller. I found that with the standard boost setting there was more lag down low but better top end due to the larger FMIC.

Anyway, I set my boost to ard 11-12psi which was ok. I was told that the standard turbo can go to around 14psi but at that setting I had trouble with air/fuel ratio.

I think its better for your turbo if you have a custom dump and front pipe and better for your engine to have a safc or ems if you decide to consistently run higher boost (14psi) with standard turbo.

Everyone has some lag, but whether you experience more due to a FMIC I don't know for sure, my car seems more responsive with it, and it definately produces more power. If lag has increased then it is not a significant amount, but I have quite a different setup than most, so I don't know how this has affected my results.

The No.1 problem with cooler selection is incorrect size. It amazes me a little that people consistantly get fmic that are sometimes over 200hp more flow than required. And I am amazed even more by mechanics and tuners who make this recomendation to customers when they would never do such a thing with camshaft selection,head porting or carby size.

Just pick your HP and 'then' pick the matching parts.

I don't think I've seen a GTST with a stock turbo yet with a properly sized fmic.

Your right that most people have overly large intercoolers, but I for one don't wish to swap intercoolers everytime I do something to my engine. I have all my airflow side setup in anticipation of a larger turbo, therefore I currently have a larger FMIC than I currently need.

Not a problem. I assume you are already planing to get a turbo of the correct size for the intercooler.

This thread however is about the stock turbo. And many people are blissfully un-aware of the waste of money a larger intercooler can be if done the wrong way.

Look forward to seeing you rip it up with the GT30 on!

I think anyone that fits a FMIC is planning on a turbo upgrade of some sort, whether it be hiflo'ing or a larger turbo, as once you've done the fmic there isnt much else that can increase the power of the car but increasing the turbo (after ecu, fuel system etc). But at the same time once you start to play with the boost you really need to get a better intercooler to control temperatures. No point in fitting something slightly bigger than the stock one just to suit the stock turbo.

Rob upping the ic size and front location, is a good idea even on a stock turbo if you want that exra power or if your car is going to see sustained boost (like on the track).

The problem is that if I was to ask " how much HP does you intercooler flow?" Most wouldn't be able to tell me.

Then upgrading to a larger turbo, being good and all, will also mean the intercooler was not selected with a specific turbo in mind.

This kind of 'bolt on' mentality is the reason 80% of all the modifed street cars (including V8s and everything else) perform fairly ordinarily considering the amounts of money thrown at them.

What results do you think I will attain with my trust unit then? Will I get slower 1/4 mile times? I can see how moving the side mounted intercooler to the front would assist with air-flow, but at the same time the stock cooler can only flow so much cooler air to the turbo and because of its small size can only cool the air slightly. A friend of mine with a 180sx mounted a GTR cooler into the front nose of his car and even with the limited flow (180sx's nose must suck for a front mount as hardly any of it is exposed at the front due to it dipping off) he noticed the car running considerably better and actually found boost to come on quicker. Before the fmic he was running 14.1's with it he ran a 13.6 I think, no other adjustments. Anyway with the fmic and lower tyre pressures I hope to be biting at rev's heels :(

    • I am using Motec M150.  I am not working on the car myself actually.  My workshop is giving all these info, they are quite reputable in the industry and are very familiar with Motec and RBs and have done a few big setups with VCam and single turbo on RBs.  In fact, they built and tuned my engine from day one.  But they are stumped with my engine at the moment and cannot work out how come the compression is so low with the VCam. They told me that they have now swapped in some Kelford cams (without the VCam) and can achieve around 130psi compression and the low end torque is better, but now the engine is doughy as.  It boosts and peaks at more than 1000rpm slower, with twin HKS GTIII RS, it doesn't get full boost until over 5000rpm. I have always thought the VCam was a bit disappointing at the low rpm. To a point I had to ride the clutch a fair bit to get up a small hill from stand still.  That was when I had a clutch.  Now changing to a 8HP, I don't have that luxury and this problem has become a major issue. I am beginning to think the VCam never work since the day it was installed.  Maybe it was just sitting at the most advanced point, that is why it went good at top end but very ordinary at the bottom.  Therefore, with the help of the Holinger 6 speed and paddle shift, as long as it was moving, it drove pretty good.
