BADR33
hi guys, im in the process of building a rb30de that runs vvt and has 10.5 compression using rb25de pistons. parts im using: rb30e short block $100 from a wreakers rb25de head that has been rebuilt and modifyed to fit rb30 and run VVT $1050 all up (i got lucky with the guy RIPS selling the part that he was going to use on his drag car) the mods were $500 with a braided line to run vvt. rb25de series one bought for donar parts $500 with flywheel. i am using the inlet manifold, injectors?, loom, coils, cam covers, cam wheels, oil pump, cam belt covers, alternator, crank pully, plus some other misc bits off the motor. rb30 water pump $110 (shouldnt have bought off trademe ) rb25de pistons 2nd hand $100 (didnt feel like stripping the motor down and wanted to keep some resale value* for gearbox im planning on using a rb20det or rb25de. but i have found a rb20det one that was rebuilt not long ago for $750 so i will probly get that. not too sure on what clutch im going to use. i have relocated the cam belt tensionar to the suggest spot and i will use the dyco cambelt along with 2 rb25de tensionars. things i have had done to the block so far is only an acid dip that cost $55 but in the next week or 2 i will be taking it to a engine reconditioners to get the crank ballanced and new bearings along with the rb25de pistons swapped on to the rb30e rods, a hone and possibly a decking, new head gasket and the head attached with new studs as i dont have any. i will also get the injectors reconditioned if they are big enough for what i require. i will attempt to do the rest of the work myself and with the help of a mate. and i will do most of the painting and polishing myself for running in im planing on using rb25de ecu and then once its run in i will get it tuned with a GTSlink plug in ecu. this is about how it looks now feel free to make some comments or reccomendations. some of these things may change once i talk to th engine reconditionars about it. oh and excuse any of my bad spelling, thanks, geoff Edited January 4, 2006 by BADR33 Link to comment https://www.sau.com.au/forums/topic/100540-my-rb30de/ Share on other sites

warpz0r
how much have you spent in keeping it N/A including the rebuild? Link to comment https://www.sau.com.au/forums/topic/100540-my-rb30de/#findComment-1854191 Share on other sites
POOMBAH
Looks awesome man. Do you have an idea or set goal for power figures? Best of luck with your project Link to comment https://www.sau.com.au/forums/topic/100540-my-rb30de/#findComment-1854308 Share on other sites
BADR33
ok well the engine hasnt been rebuilt just yet but looking at getting it done in a week or so. the only real difference in keeping it N/A verse turbo in the cost is the differnt donar motor i used and the rb25de pistons i bought off a mate for $100. the fact i used a r33 head would have addded to the cost cus i would have got it rebuilt but i got lucky with the head. so in theroy i have only spent the extra $100 on a long block in keeping the motor N/A. but im also saving 2grand on no turbo and 800 on a gearbox cus i bought a rebuilt rb20det one for $750 um for the power figures. im looking for about 140rwkw at the start once allthe problems are ironed out. if there is any. i heard rb30es are about 100rwkw with light mods and there is a 40% power increase with the twin cam head so thats what im working off and then ill aim for more with an aftermarket computer and cams etc. Link to comment https://www.sau.com.au/forums/topic/100540-my-rb30de/#findComment-1855276 Share on other sites
ebola
10.5:1 compression is higher than standard. Had a mate with an rb30de, made 100 or so (or was it 97?). Pod filter, 2.5in extractors, and pistons - I think it was to 9.5:1 (but I'm not sure, and don't know the standard compression). Either way, It was smooth. There was no torque curve. It made 100 Nm from 0 (well, almost) ro redline. I like turbos, I like power, but the delivery of that car was so linear it was incredible (or am I talking out my hat) Either way, 10.5 and a DE head (*with* vvt) should be great. I cant wait for your preliminary results Link to comment https://www.sau.com.au/forums/topic/100540-my-rb30de/#findComment-1855490 Share on other sites
BADR33
yeah stock is somthing like 9.0 or 9.5 from memory. yeah it should be great and should be a huge step up from my rb20e. thanks for the support guys. its so hard to find people to support a N/A rb30. im keen to see the results too. i got a price to get the long block assembled today. but ill have a shop around and ill decide early next week im a fan of turbos too, got nothing agaist them. i just like the smooth power of N/A. plus im not ready for the huge power of a turbo... or having the money for insurance and gas... haha its $146.9 for a ltr or 95 octaine fuel here now Link to comment https://www.sau.com.au/forums/topic/100540-my-rb30de/#findComment-1857547 Share on other sites
dondesoto
BADR33 Ive built an rb30de This is what i did . Bought a complete r33 rb25de with loom and ecu for $1100 . Put the rb25de pistons on the rb30 rods . new rings and rod bearings . fitted rb25de head after filling oil passage for the vvt . relocated cam belt tensioner and used 1 x tensioner . hooked up the vvt using external feed from the oil pressure sender . made extractoors using a set of rehashed rb30e ones , now using rb25det 370 cc injectors apexi safc2 fitted originally had an 68 mm xf falcon t/b fitted with all this best 1/4 mile was 14.7 now have 2 x rb25 t/b manifold fitted and does 14.4 for the 1/4 , but it really needs to go on the dyno . i,ve now had this engine in for around 40000 kms , gets great fuel consumption and idles smoothly at 800rpm . lots of low down torque too . really dont know why Nissan didnt build this engine themselves . BADR33
haha yeah it woulda been awesome if nissan had done that factory. cheers mate. yeah that sounds exactly like what im doing. my complete rb25de with computer and loom only cost me 500 tho then i sold that head for $150 to a mate. cheers. yeah i have a lot more things to consider once i get it up and running as ill have to do that before i go to a GTSlink computer. i wont have to have an AFM with that computer. that 2 throttle body thing is definatly trick. i like it and id do it if i had the skills and tools. for your extractors did you have to grind down the water gallarie lump on the side of the block? or is it a better idea to have the extractor flange modifyed? thanks, geoff yeah when are you going to put yours on the dyno? have you fixd that problem you have? or you just going to build a new motor? also how much did your cam belt cost you? i can get the dyco one for $70 delieverd. dondesoto
I used the rb25de cast exhaust manifold as a template for the exhaust place to profile cut a flange . so extractors flange is same as rb25 . my timing belt cost $65 2 yrs ago . well the engine seems ok after all , not using oil , smoke maybe was over rich fuel setting . hope to have it dynoed before i take it to salt lake speed trials in 7 weeks Link to comment https://www.sau.com.au/forums/topic/100540-my-rb30de/#findComment-1859345 Share on other sites

BADR33
damn that fuel consumtion wont be too bad then. thats about what i get now off my rb20e. this motor will be going in to this car in the pic. need a respectiable motor to make it a good car. its possibly the first rb30de in NZ and one of the first rb30s in to a r33 skyline in NZ too. BADR33
ok guys heres the pics of all the parts im taking up to the engine reconditioners tomorow or the day after minus the gearbox. you can see the braded hose for the VVT. they gave me an approximate price of $580 for labour to build plus the cost of parts so im budgeting about a grand. or if i get them to do the clutch as well a little more then that. the top set of pistons are rb25 and the bottom set are rb30. here is a pic of the difference in the piston crowns. they need to be cleaned tho. hopfully i dont have to wait too long on the parts to come as i want to get started on putting the motor in my car soon Edited January 14, 2006 by BADR33 Link to comment https://www.sau.com.au/forums/topic/100540-my-rb30de/#findComment-1866958 Share on other sites
dondesoto
do you know the pin hieght in the pistons is different . the rb25 pistons sit around .060" lower in the bore of the rb 30 on the rb30 rods . i run mine this way cos it still gives 10.5 -1 compression . you could deck the block to bring pistons up higher and get 11.5 -1 compression . Are you fitting new piston rings to the rb25 pistons . The top piston ring is different between the rb25 and 30 pistons . thickness rb25 1.25 mm rb 30 1.5 mm . The other piston rings are the same . If you did get new rb25 piston rings , where did you get them . When i built my engine i had to reuse the top ring allready on the rb25de pistons Edited January 14, 2006 by dondesoto Link to comment https://www.sau.com.au/forums/topic/100540-my-rb30de/#findComment-1867013 Share on other sites
BADR33
yup i also new that the pin hight is differnt but not by alot. i would run 11.5 compression but then i would most probly have to run 98 octain fuel and that is getting harder and harder to find here plus it costs 4cents a ltr more then 95 octain. plus wont that increase gas usage? yeah im planning on getting new piston rings. ill let the engine place sort that out for me tho. you should be able to buy new rings easy enough tho? wouldnt they be the same from the rb25det as well? ill let you know how much they cost if i get new ones. lucky i hadnt already pulled the rings off the pistons. Don what spark plugs are you using? Link to comment https://www.sau.com.au/forums/topic/100540-my-rb30de/#findComment-1867153 Share on other sites
