Well, it depends on what you want.

I know someone who's had a standard rebuild for 4k, all he wanted was his stock engine working again and to continue to work without any hassles.

Ofcourse if you're building a track car you're going to need to spend big. But for a standard, good rebuild, i don't see why people should spend so much.

No way I'd lay down 10k for a rebuild! I'd expect around half that for a decent (not a big HP race engine) quality rebuild. I'd suggest you PM SXR and ask some questions. One of the Canberra guys had his RB26 rebuilt (inc R&R) with forgies, new W/P, O/P, shot/p rods, full balance etc for $5.5k.....

10K is eazy to spend how much do want to spend is the question and do you want it done once and once only

An engine will always be cheaper if you can do a lot of the work yourself. If you are paying someone to do the total job and it was done properly, you would be looking at $6-7000 for the engine plus approx $1500 to remove and refit it.

I've attached a screenshot below of what a nice solid RB26 is worth to build. Keep in mind that the engine is standard but stronger. I'm not trying to chase up work, I just thought it would save some guessing. This is from a customers actual bill.

Hi guys.

I am in the process of finding a workshop around brisbane to rebuild my r32 gtr engine.

I have had a few rough quotes up around $10000!!!!!

Is this about right or are the shops ripping me off?

One shop said the parts alone with forged pistons will be around $4400!!!!!!!!

How much should the parts cost and how much in labour is reasonable?

Any workshop recommendations would be great too!

I think the biggest problem here is your got to add more detail

Is this a drive in/drive out quote?

as a lot of people are only thinking of rebuilding the motor but to remove and reinstall etc will added like proengines said $1500 up to $2500 depending on workshop and hourly rate.

example of part prices ~

CP piston $1375

nissan bearing $300

gasket kit $300

arp rod bolts $100

block machining and decking $200

tomei block restrictor $15

timing belt $110

water pump $320(gone up recently)

acid bath $50

misc (painting,cleaning etc etc) $300

head servicing is a bit of and unknown till you see the head $700 the cheapest you could hope for and that’s with no exhaust guides (which in r32 I don’t think you would get away with tho)

It would be advisable to add

Crank collar $350

Oil pump n1 $560

Exhaust guides $?

so you can see why its easy to get $6000 plus engine rebuild when you add labour plus another $2000 for removable and installation so $10,000 might be a bit dear but if they allowed for installing forged rods that is all it would take to make the bill reach that mark.

$4000...wtf....thats what just the head cost to do.....good luck with your $4000 engine.

i agree, 4k for a full rebuild including labour? you'd be lucky to find someone to replace just your rings for that, good luck with the build.

proengines..I notice you added a crank collar but no new oil pump?

and do ACL make RB26 bearings now i know they where planing on making them but didnt have them when i had my motor built

The pump on the engine was fine, we just fitted the collar so it had a larger drive area.

Acl make race series bearings for the 26 now, we've used quite a few sets so far with no problems. They have the extra feed holes in the mains and are a proper performance bearing.

may i ask what blueprinting involves?

Blueprinting is probably a bit of an over used word. We use it do differentiate between a standard assembly job and one where some more time is needed. Basically it involves dummy assembly to check deck heights, end float, clearances between internal components etc. Ring gaps are all filed to the right gap, piston to valve clearances, bearing clearances, bearing crush in the housings, calculate compression, check rod lengths and equalise them and quite a few other small but important jobs (not necessarily in that order).

It really adds a day to assembling an engine, you dummy up, measure and correct any problems one day and then assemble it the next day (or night) I usually assemble engines at night or really early in the morning when the phone doesn't ring or people drop in, it's too easy to forget something if you keep stopping and starting.

It's really nice to have proengines on here to support some of us on the real cost of an engine rebuild.

As documented experience shows, a high cost does not always mean it's a bulleetproof engine, nor should everyone need the super track engine for just a daily driver so $4k is perfectly acceptable. RR as always adds a bit more but if included just beware that something must be missed so ask for a detailed quote.

At the end of the day it's the warped and thoughtless minds of the user that are primarily responsible for RB (or any other good engine) failures, mostly in the hunt for power.

It all depends on what you need done, and do you just want it fixed so that it is drivable or do you want it to be stronger and allow better performance?

My engine rebuild was $3,256 I needed a new oil pump, purchased my own N1 it was about $400 brand new. One conrod was bent, can't remember how much that was. New bearings, gasket kit and machining...There was a couple of other things but I forget what. The engine was left in the car for the most part. The $3,256 was the total cost for the entire rebuild - parts, labour, machining etc....Admittedly all payments were cash. No complaints as to the job done though :D

I regularly thrash my car and it stands up to it every time. 310ps @ all 4 wheels, 1.0 bar of boost, still overfueling and needing a re-tune as it hasn't had a proper one since it came over from japan....So yeah it is still fairly stock. My block needed quite alot of machining, which made up a large portion of the bill.

All depends on what you want / need....

just thought i'd kick this up again. I am doing a RB26 rebiuld, my mates a engine builder, or a mechienest, as he calls himself... his quote to me was just shy of $5600. (inc GST) I bought a head for $2000 thats is worth about $4000 (all the work and parts.) I also bought new turobs, oil filter relocation kit, Power FC, and billet conrods. thats over $13000 already. I am also thinking about getting my crank nitrated and ballenced too.

After, I have to sort out my fuel and air intake, thats going to cost around 2500-3000. I am aiming to hit 570-600 hp... not to mention my clutch and G/box, front and rear diff...

I just want to ask one question to all the owners of huge hp, is all the money and time is worth it?

Here in Canada it costs about 5-6K canadian dollars that is for EVERYTHING STOCK!

To get into the forged internals you are looking at about 15,000-20,000!!!I think that the Aud is worth about $0.10 less then the canadian dollar

Belive me if i could get a $10,000AUD motor with forged internals i would be all over it!

for me 10K aud seems to be a good price but i am on a different continant were there are only 100-150 Skylines in the country!!!

proengines...i see you replace the cam belt tensioner and pulley on your builds....good stuff. How's Richards donk going?

but he used a Gates timing belt and no note of replacing the idler bolt!!!

$10k is easily spent building an RB26!! People building them cheaper are either doing most of the work themselves or arent replacing much other than the bare essentials....

Anyone building an RB26 would be silly to not replace the oil pump with an N1 item as minumum, increasing the engines oil capacity and some sort of baffling and using an N1 water pump.... anything less than this and your not doing your fresh engine any justice!!
