huum but what happened to those ppl whose got radar detectors before the law is passed..

see like carbom fibre, the law is passed on 1993 for CF to be illegal...so the cars manufactured prior to 1993 can have a permit for CF in W.A

I mean ppl have spent like $700-$1000 for radar detectors and they get them having in mind that they are legal...now it's illegal illegal.....so where the hell are they going to get their money back from...unless the gov willing to pay the amount for used radar detector...

so it's just bad luck $700 gone? next time they'll make import cars illegal..aww bad luck..there goes your $40 000 on imports...

Yes I agree!

I leave my K band on even in city/suburbs, many times driving in the metro areas it has gone off crazy! I look around and on the otherside is a cop car with a radar setup in or on the car as they are driving!! So watch out they still use them round the burbs!

Yep, turning K-band OFF is stupid. There is still PLENTY of cops, with vehicle mounted Speed traps that use K-band in the suburbs.

Sure as hell K-band beeps its ass off at every automatic door and petrol station, but for protection against vehicle mounted units, its a fair sacrifice.

Firstly multinovas are dangerous.

I spend all my time driving looking for them.. even when im not speeding its just habid. This means im paying less attention to the road... and more attention to the side of the road.

I had a Radar detector.. My car was broken into and everything was stolen im fairly sure because they could see where the suction cup marks on the windscreen.. Down goes about 2-3k of gear.

I just live with the fact the government is not so interested in road safety but is more dependant on the bottom line and the amount of funding the government can raise. Banning radar detectors is just the next step.

Here here!!

I mean $2k fine and who knows how many points (24 in NSW) and then theres drink drivers, the more dangerous of the two concerns here, and other similar D#$k heads on the road who really don't get a harsh enough penalties!!

I know cops use the in car radars in the suburbs.

The point is that if your radar detector is beeping every 5 seconds then your brain wont be switched on when its beeping for a radar.

Hence making it less effective then if it was setup to just detect multinovas, which are much more common.

If you have never been caught by any radars by leaving k band on and can put up with all the annoying beeping then good for you, keep doing what your doing.

Am I the only person here who doesn't have a radar detector and doesn't see the need for one? It is a simple thing to not go over the speed limit 99% of the time.

My opinon has always been that you can see multinovas in time to brake unless you are doing waaayy over the limit or not paying attention. They work as mock "bad situations" like a kid running out of and alley after a ball etc etc. You should be able to see that and stop/slow substantially. In that respect i dont mind multinovas. Handhelds on the other hand can ping you from a k away behind a bush in a ditch and even if you have a nasa developed radar detector its not going to beep until you are already busted.

You mean being able to see a black multinova, hidden infront of a tree with bushes around it, usually in a hard to see spot (although some of them are very easy to see)

I dont see how they can work as a mock "bad situations" thing when they are hidden. When was the last time you came across one on someones front lawn (were kids may be playing) The majority of the time they are hidden in bushes and quite well sometimes.

Whilst I do agree they are supposed to help save lives (and raise revenue to a point) I think its a big load of crap that they ban radar detectors, giving a $2000 fine and possible 24 demerits, hell i could go down the pub, drink myself stupid, drive home, get pulled over and most likely come off better (less points and fine most likely - both would loose your license though)

Instead of banning radar detectors, why dont they actually think about it, and concentrate more on fixing the roads, stopping drink drivers and dickheads on the road.

How is baning radar detectors going to help??

Dont worry Rhino your not the only one never had one never will.

Adam: it wouldnt be a very good bad situation if they made it obvious would it. I have noticed they often set them up near laneways around schools so that is justified. Plus there are usually cars in front of you that brake when they see them which get teh old spider sense tingling.

Banning radar detectors is not really going to help same as double demerits or any other stupid scheme that Michelle Roberts or any other of her cronies comes up with in an attept to justfiy her postion/salary but they have to be seen to be doing something dont they.

Nah your not. I don't have one. I just don't speed 95% of the time. That, and the fact I only drive like 30km's a week :|

I've only been caught ONCE where I know a radar detector would have saved me, and although the 4 points really did hurt, it sure didn't cost me $1000 that a radar detector would have.

Think you missed the point. if u get pinged by a Laser gun that country cops carry they have your speed already, sure it might make beeping sounds but they have your speed already, your busted. Multinovas can be detected but you dont see those often on country roads, they are usually hidden behind bushes near petrol stations and neon signs.

The detectors are useless against laser unless you get a signal from it while its pointed at another car. I got done by a laser a while back and braked as soon as the radar picked it up. The cop said he could see me braking from the speed detected...pointed to the detector and said we had you before you could react to the detector.

In city mode they are fine for driving around the city...X band beep is disabled so you dont pick up automatic doors and everything else and have the thing beeping constantly.

Was talking to guy from NSW, he said that they get fines up to $3k and they take 24 points away!! 24!!

And you can apparantly get detector detector units, which detect that the cops are detecting that you have a radar detector and it will shut it self off in time. But now the cops have detector detector detectors!! (Shite I'm finger tired!)

Also if they detect it and you deniy having one after asking you a couple of times, they can arrest you! (not sure how true that bit is)

haha detector detector detectors :(

I had a Bel 845 STI plus (I think thats what it was) before my car was broken into and someone stolen it. In Canada they use Bel radar detectors to pick up cars that have Bel detectors (or they did when I was there in 98). They leak Ka or K band (cantremember which) so when you drive past another car that has a bel your Ka goes off...strength of only 1 or 2 but enough to pick up a signal. Gave me a fright every time coz it makes you think a cop car is coming.

well, this morning coming into the city from the north, just as you get to the fork where you can off at james street or wellington street, there was a black or dark blue commodore station wagon parked just before the bridge going over james street with dark tinted windows and the rear drivers side passenger window down with what looked like shadecloth and some form of camera or similar type device behind it.

VERY sneaky if you ask me.

It appears they are gearing up for a full on war with people who are speeding and I believe we'll see some big changes over the coming year or two targetting speeders.

Speed cameras 'cause road deaths'

may have seen this posted some time ago.. dunno about anyone else but alot of my attention is drawn to the side of the road looking for the damn things rather than on the road. Reguardless of me actualy sticking to the limit, they are a distraction IMO.
