Electric Aerial and Airbag light: help!

also posted in general discussion, but nothing yet. so i post it here for the experts among us.

While fooling around with my electric aerial over the weekend, or should i say "that area of the car" I noticed something strange.

there's a metal resistor-like ceramic and metal doohickey attached to inside the rear quart panel next to the electric aerial, I had to remove/disconnect it to get the aerial out and stuff....put the aerial back in, and still didn't find WHY the hell it wont go more than halfway up.. grrr! anyway

Jump back in the car, go to drive off, and the airbag light is now on!!!....I don't think i bumped anything down there but still...

Back to the metal resistor/doohickey -- When I pull this out/disconnect it the car wont idle for more than a minute.

I start the car, everything is fine.. then 30secs later is stops.. cuts out completely. nothing. starts fine again, 30secs later the same thing.

Maybe it's unrelated, but now my airbag light is on. I've tried an ECU reset, but cant think of anything else to try eh...

HELP!

Don't want to be rude, but your a dickhead.

It sounds like you've f#cked up royally. First you have disturbed one of the airbag sensors, and secondly it sounds like you've managed to disconnect the power to you fuel pump. This means that there is insufficent pressure to keep the car going.

Let me know what help you need, and I'll try and talk you through it.

Dude, the car's fine hey. hence I'm at work right now..

Define "disturbed" an airbag sensor... bumped it? knocked it? I thought airbag sensors are only at the front of the car? (havent been up there)

as for power to the fuel pump...dun think so, i still hear the fuel pump crankin' it's all okay now as I didnt remove this resistor thing. and the car STARTS without it, just wont keep going.

thus, the reason it's back in :D

I just wanna know what the hell that thing is and what it does!

Oh yeh, and to work out what airbag sensor i have "disturbed" and how to fix it...

Hey metblue....

Nah, that switch doesn't do that on mine, it's been disconnected and re-used for other mods. The aerial is controlled by the radio on/off remote wire, and fully extends normally.

Just intermittantly extending all the way :D

grrr!

Most airbag sensors are accelerometers, but they need to be mounted perfectly correct to give a proper signal, so maybe yours is now at an angle.

With the fuel pump thing, yes it has power, but it doesn't know how much to pump, the resistor acts like a shunt so the pump is controlled by a small current signal. Anyway, leave that in, don't mess with it.

(i know nothing... nothing) <----- kEn stYleZ

P.S doesnt ur airbag go off no matter where ue been hit. hence there being sensors at the rear of the car. so thjat thing may have been a sensor and u took it off.... = disturbed. but then i prolly am wrong

    • Thanks @PranK for the updated member status, much appreciated! 👍🏼 Now, about those pics… Unfortunately I could only find ones that I took in the dark. I was soon to discover that underneath it wasn’t in the best shape, but it was mine and that’s all I cared about at the time 😆
    • Oh, and only having done this task yesterday, I've now driven the car ~60km since, and while it is hard to avoid placebo effect and confirmation bias, I reckon that some annoyances I had with the way the car has been behaving have improved. Which....kinda makes sense, I guess. If the bushes were really stiff and resisting rotation, they would have been contributing to the effective wheel rate. And if it was more so on one side (which it was, because one side was worse than the other) then.... you might imagine that the additional rate would be asymmetric, and potentially even different between compression and rebound. And so... the car has been twitchy at higher speeds - like freeway on ramps. It really shouldn't be. The wheel alignment is good and there are no (other) known problems elsewhere in the suspension. But at 90-100 on a long sweeping ramp, tiny steering wheel motions would make it feel like it wanted to rear steer. Quite nervous. At lower speeds it would heave about in a manner that it didn't use to. Didn't want to put power down, etc etc. Now...seems to behave better. Am going to have to concentrate on the various corners where it has exhibited weirdness, on the rare occasions when I can get a decent run at them without Methanial getting in the way in his D-Max/Ranger/LDV Van/etc.
