* Telemarketing will get you no where. (Low pay and no real advance in career opertunities)

* Real estate is good but you need to have boobs or a property licence. Also remember the gold coast is one of the toughest real estate markets.

* Office jobs in general as file clerks means you have to work all day for nothing. You have little chance of going anywhere in the future....

Most QLD's know i work for Harvey Norman...

My first large retail experience. Have been there now for 5 years this April. They have paid for education to this point and have no expectations of me staying. (Meaning i didnt have to sign a contract or anything)

But i want to stay due to the possibilities of future employment and promotion throughout the ranks (There are hundreds of steps to the top at Harveys). I mean alot of the best retailers boards worked for Harvey Norman at some stage in their careers.

I think the best 2 retailers to work for would have to be....

1. Harveys

2. Coles Myer

These are the only two with future promise in terms of growth. Any retailers in your area would be more then happy if you turned up with resume and were very excited to work for them. If you go to work everyday thinking im going to impress today then you will be noticed.

Then you get promoted and so on. Anyways enough from me.

Just one quick point....

The more jobs you have had is not a good sign... It means this guy is unhappy and so on... The saying "If it gets tough the tough get going" comes to mind...

You will be asked what you have done in the past. When you are asked word it like this....

"I worked at IGA but had to leave due to a change of address. I really liked it there. Then i got on board with a garden shop but they went bust, shame cause i really liked that job also. Had some time at a bakery but found it a little too simple and I need more of a chalange so i got into a gift shop casue i like people."

"Now i have made a big move and have had to leave the gift shop, but im very interested in grounding my self in your business and am willing to learn anything you are willing to teach."

Anyways go something like that and you will get your first interview hands down.

Cheers Col

Also found a customer service position at Coles (Front counter) at Surfers.... Would be a great start....

Pay at coles is like $14 per hour for a 17 year old....

be carfull of retailers big promises though, i recently worked for a big retailer and they fed me absolute bullshit the whole way, i saw like 4 people leave in a month just in my section.

retail is harsh though, well it can be if your in sales, like harvey norman and so on , u have to be commited to stay in the game, cant just half arse it. otherwise be a shelf packer

yeh colemyer is sick, 2nd biggest employer in aus next too the government, so lots or foom to grow

just remember to say all the bullshit like u love giving good customer serice and your there to sell the benfits in the product and all that crap

getting into retail is a peice of piss if u have like a thrid of a brain hehehehe

Hey Buddy,

My advice to you would be similar to what my advice would be to my little bro also 17.

Go to TAFE at Southport when you get here and make an appointment with a couseler and find a part time course that your interested in that will lead to full time work you will enjoy.

Once you are enrolled and know your hours of tuition, go and look for a partime job that will fill around the days/hours you have off from TAFE.

Just an idea, ive been on the coast most my life and I have also done telemarketing. Contrerey to what other people have said it pays well if you are good(and I was good hahah) as the bonus structures add up. So if you are a fluent speaker and arnt afraid to hard sell people give that a crack. Just be warned 30% of the people you call will tell you to get f@#ked!

Goodluck

150k for a CM manager??? nooooooooooooooooooooo way. maybe the area manager for the state but even then i'd be doubtful. 50-70k is more realistic. If you like dealing with people get into retail because it can branch off into a lot of different areas. you can become a CSO further down the track or move onto more sales orintated positions (which is what i'm doing) the social life is great.

another word of warning. Coles Myer dosent hire people full time (sales assistants) on policy. because you have to give them rights. so you might need 2 jobs.........but that's where telesales comes in! i managed to work at Grace Bros and a telesales job and it was a good life.
