hi there. i just finished starting my 1990 Skyline GTS-t Type M, for the first time in about 6 weeks. it's currently winter stored in my garage, temperature and humidity controlled. its cold in there, but the temperature is set for the cars health not mine. anyways the only things i did to it before storing it were top up the fuel tank, change all fluids, and over-inflate tires to prevent flatspotting. today i felt like hearing it, and since im not using a trickle charger i figure it'd be good for the battery to start it up.

when i cranked the ignition, it started up, then hesititated for abit which is normal since it basically landed and went straight into winter storage without a tune-up. but then i noticed the fan was on.....wtf? btw the engine is completely stock. so i get out and open the hood, yeah the fan IS on, and i hear ANOTHER noise...oh man.

from my exhaust, which is 3" from the turbo elbow back (still has a cat in there though) from just inside the tip, theres a flipping sound? you know how when you're a kid and you stick a piece of paper in a fan blade it makes that sound? its that exact sound.

and while im crouched by the exhaust looking at that, light, arid white smoke slowly starts coming out, about as much as a cigarette would make. it smells normal though, like 94 octane, 'feels' normal too, but my car never used to make smoke like this. when i turned the ignition off it was still smoking. my house is 2003, so its new, but now im wishing i had stuck steel wool in the exhaust tip to rule out the possibility that some misguided rodent hid in there and is now medium-rare. even when i turn the ignition off, something that sounds like its near the turbine and downpipe area gives a few lazy thumps before the car completely shuts off and stops making sounds...im feeling kinda down right now , the skyline's coming out of winter storage in about 3 weeks, and it'll go straight to a mechanic to be prepped for the spring. but now it looks like it might have some problems too. if you have any insight or suggestions please post up. :)

The 'flipping' sound from the exhaust sounds a lot like a gasket that is past its use-by date. Once they crack/deteriorate, exhaust gas will escape from the tiny hole and makes that sound. It should get louder with RPM as the higher revs mean more air is being exhausted therefore more is escaping from the leaky gasket. That is an easy(ish) job and you may well be able to do it yourself.

If you have a cat on the exhaust then any potential rodent would be stuck on the muffler side of the exhaust system.

With the white smoke, if it truly is smoke then I'm out of idea but it may well be condensation being vented through the exhaust. You know how a lot of cars blow white 'smoke' on cold mornings for the first few kilometres? Did it go away after a few minutes or kept coming out?

I'm sorry but I can't help with the fan, no idea there :D

Cheers

Mark

PS I'm guessing you're in Canada/US as Sydney had the second hottest day on record a few weeks ago :D

The clutch fan? It should always come on when you start up. When the motor warms, the clutch fan will disengage to the point where it still spins, but will be pretty silent. (and not sap any power)

And then it comes back on when the motor gets too hot. I'd bet the radiator and everything was still touchable before you switched it off?

i would be saying the same thing as cowie in regards to the white smoke if you took it for a big drive and it was still doing it then yea it might be a problem but it is probably just vapour disapating from the heat. the fan i got nothing though

    • I used to hate R31s, and any of the other Nissans that led up to it, and any of the Toyotas with similar styling, because of the boxiness. They were, and remain, childish, simplistic, and generally awful. I appreciate R31s a lot more now, but only the JDM 2 door. The ADM 4 door (and any other 4 door, even if they are unique compared to our local one) can eat a bowl of dicks. The Aussie R31 is also forever tarnished by their association with stereotypical bong clutching Aussie R31 owners of the 90s and early 2000s. I think the Nissans of the 70s (other than 120Y/180B/200B) are far superior looking to the 80s cars. The 240K era Skylines are boss. The same is broadly true of Toyotas. Hondas don't ever register in my thinking, from any era. Mitsus are all horrid shitboxen in any era, and so also don't register. Subarus are always awful, ditto. Daihatsus and Suzukis also don't generally register. They are all invisible. I think the SW20 MR2 looks fiddly. The 3000GT/GTO is like that but way worse. Too many silly plastic barnacles and fiddly gimmicks ruined what could have been a really nice base shape. Kinda-sorta looks like a big heavy ST165 Celica coupe (and I'm not sure if that's a good thing or a bad thing). I think the 180SX is dreadfully bland. It's not bad looking. But it has no excitement to it at all. It's just a liftback coupe thing with no interest in its lines, and bad graphical elements (ie wide expanses of taillight plastic on the rear garnish). The S13 Silvia is a little better - getting closer to R32 shapes. But still....bland. S14? Nope. Don't love it. S15...a little better. Probably a lot better, actually. Benefits from not being like a shrunk in the wash R34 (where the S13 was a shrunk in the wash R32 and the S14 looked like a Pulsar or something else from the stable on Nissan mid 90s horrors). The Z32 was hot as f**k when it came out but hasn't aged as well as the A80. Keep in mind that I think the R33 is the most disgusting looking thing - and out of all the previous cars mentioned is objectively closest to my precious R32. It's just....real bad, almost everywhere you look. And that is down to the majority of what was designed in the 90s being shit. All Nissans from that era look like shit. Most other brands ditto. In that context, the FD absolutely stands out as being by far the best looking car, for reasons already discussed. Going behind the aesthetics, the suspension alone makes it better than almost any other car.
    • If they just called it the "Mazda Tiffany", it would have been spot on.
    • Yup but for me its the HR ! Cut my teeth on the old holden 6s in the day ! And here's me thinking in the day it was also the 300ZX and the Mitsubishi GT3000 ! All, as well had good lines, but always seemed to need finishing off, style wise.
    • A 180SX has a much better look than a FD. The roofline is far superior being a fastback. It's popups look better. In a world where we all subconsciously add a little bit of low, and wheels of our preference, it's just more handsome than the FD is. The FD just looks 'bubbly' in comparison. It can come down to preference, sure. But "The FD is the BEST looking (on appearances alone) 90's JDM car without question?" Nah. Plenty of questions lol. I could think of 8 cars I think look fundamentally better, and probably a handful of ones that look about on par with a FD. (like say a SW20 MR2) I feel people like/overrate the FD because of it's mythicality/rarity, its rotary and it's unpredictable nature. It probably drives great, you can stuff a ton of tyre under there, has a unique sound, light as hell. I feel that people reading this thinking "YOU CANT RATE A 180 ABOVE A FD BECAUSE A 180 IS A CHEAP DRIFT BUCKET" prove the point about bias as to what the car represents, moreso than how it actually looks.. I feel the 80's boxy/squared off look is becoming better looking due to time, and 90's melted soap bar aesthetics have not aged well. (yet?) And this thread is purely about looks :p
    • A red or yellow S15 wins my vote, Ack that it just scraps in with the 90's cars theme, but they are great looking little sports car Next would be a A80 Supra (pre face lift), whilst the A80 has its own issues, I feel is the best looking larger GT car As for the FD, "I" feel that the reason it triggers me in a non-positve way when looking at one, is like looking at a high maintenance pretty girl who you know is mentally unstable and likely to explode for no apparent reason
