Larger diameter exhausts permit the engine to expel larger volumes of exhaust gas from the engine easier.

The engine's power will not taper off as much high in the rev range because it has to supply energy to push the larger volume of exhaust gas out of the exhaust pipe(s).

basically quite simple. bigger exhaust = more power and less restrictive = less work for the engine to push out the bad gases.
