Hi there guys! Does anyone know of a good place for power steering related problems in the eastern suburbs.

I lost my power steering after drifting :) , it has become VERY hard to turn at

low speeds, but after a close inspection I cant see anything wrong anywhere.

If someone can point me in the right direction here, I would appreciate it.

Cheers

I know it sounds unrelated, but check you battery voltage, when mine started to sag due to a damaged lead the PS solenoid was the first thing to stop working.

Although my problem was intermitant, and a mate in his 180SX just lunch his PS pump after drifting, it's certainly hard on vehicles.

Doesn't HICAS run off the PS pump as well?

I remeber once I was checking out some noise uder the bonnet and revving the car while under the carport. I did this for a few minutes and when I hopped back into the car, I noticed that my HICAS warning light was on and the steering was difficult to turn. Turned the car off and went inside for about 15 minutes before heading off. Started the car again and off I went like nothing had ever happened....steering fine and no warning light ever since!?

When you were drifting, did you notice whether your HICAS light came on at any stage as this may be something else that you may want to investigate while you're at it.

Presumably you've checked the PS fluid and it is still at the correct level. If not, a leak of some sort would have been your most obvious cause.

If the pump has failed internally, would it be simpler and cheaper to replace it with a second hand unit or are they cheap enough to recondition? Anyone had to have a pump reconditioned yet and if so, what was it worth?

Good luck with it Richo

thanks guys for the replies.

The voltage is fine, so thats not the problem, the hicas was removed from the car in Japan, so I doubt that would be the issue,

I am going to take to Pedders so they can have a proper look and see what happens.

rememeber (on r32's anyway) power steering / battery condition / hicas / and vehicle speed sensors are all related. If one is farked it can stuff up all the others....

yeah this is true when my speedo cable snapped in my 32 the hicas went with it. light only comes on after about 5 mins of driving, call feels better without hicas anyway! :(

    • Nah no bearings, just slip fit.  Would be a reasonably challenging but not impossible job to modify it to run bearings but I'm hoping that's not necessary as I may have well built one myself if I end up spending hours modifying it!
    • Brumbys with good shells are bloody expensive, I've looked at 2 "cheaper" cars, and walked away from both,  plus after some research spare parts are fairly sparce I'm starting to think that I missed the boat on finding a clean one that is straight (ish) and without alot rust I'm starting to think about a old Hilux as panels and other parts are much more available as they sold tens of thousands of them I use to be indecisive but now I'm not sure

    • Picked up a new OEM boot seal for the MX5 today as the old one got ripped a bit by me being a idiot by seeing if I could fit a large metal tool box in it, it didn't fit, and ripped the seal with the corner of the tool box I am still waiting on time to get the cams and new balancer installed, as well as the repairs to the boot Time will not be an issue soon though
