Ok, silly question mabey, but I have read so many posts saying 'I have just bought a skyline and want 200kw'... I an of the understanding that to achive a high top end output you sacrifice low down tourque ( I have driven a few cars which are testimony to this) but I find the low dow torque is a major factor in the driving experience, driving a high hp car around my favourite mountain pass is nice, but when you have to really drive it on boost to get the most out of it, its nowhere near as much fun as my near stock sky (which I bought a month ago). Now my plans are to improve the efficiency of the standard hardware - increase airflow to the pod/intercooler, mabey a waterspray for the cooler, and leave it as the entirely drivable beast she is. I think it could be just a shift in paradyme, as here in Tassie I cant think of a road that is straight for more than a few hundred metres, including highways, is why tourque is important to me, so my question is to those who have decided to chase a power goal, for what purpose do you do this? what type of driving do you do? I dont want to start an argument, I ask merely for information :P

Often though you are right dave.. sometimes you can see fairly stock skyline that is not much slower than one where somebody has spent a lot of money on to chase their 'magical' 200rwkw. It might be faster up top end (170km/hr.. etc.. ) but lower the difference it may not be so noticeable.

People often do silly things that can effect some aspects of the car, and dynos results are often put on the optimistic side.

200rwkw is at the maximum efficiency of the standard turbo with just about all other areas efficiency maximised eg FMIC, ECU injectors, pump etc, so 200rwkw's isn't a sacrificial power eg you dont lose any low down power

Personally i'd rather something like that where everything is maximised, than an all out wait 4 seconds for boost then see ya later, but i'd be happy with a turbo car right now, so i cant say anything

Ok, I dont think I really worded that question well, my question wasnt really about a specific power figure, but more why the power chase in the first place, why not learn to drive the car first, then decide what will make it fast? what is it about driving on the mainland that negates the need for development and straight to high hp? what type of driving do you buy these cars for?

edit: like satanic's reply, just the your reason behind the power chase, what does it for you?

it's fair to say a lot have done that.

i owned a stock HR31 for about a year. Then sold it. Brought the GTS-R and, started off mild then after a while more power was what i wanted.

As long as you set a goal, i dont see a problem. I wanted a fast street car, and thats what i had, now a want a response monster... so thats what im building now :P

I think (just my opinion) that perhaps dyno comps and the like have a lot to do with it. Just look at most of the car mags around claiming xxx car has yyy horsepower. Look closer and they are running 40psi boost. In reality, you are not going to drive the car around all day like that. If you do, someone with a low end set up will be a hell of a lot quicker around the streets.

I have a reasonably quick car. People always ask "how much horesepower have you got". I have some idea roughly, but it is more the driveability and what it is put together for. The torque figure says more for me.

I built mine up more specifically for track work, not drags, not dyno. It drives beautifily around town, doesn't make much after about 7000rpm, but comes onto boost at 2500-3000rpm with masses of torque.

I quite agree that a lot of people are chasing numbers that don't really mean anything so far as driving the car goes.

But then again - its their car and for the most they can do what they like.

This statement was discussed in the Whore thread a few days ago... I 100% agree with you; this is the progression my car has taken:

1) 156rwkw (stock)

2) 175rwkw (some basic mods)

3) 194.6rwkw (after tune with basic mods)

4) 230-240rwkw (after initial turbo upgrade)

5) ??? (after Auto ECU problem 100% solved)

I think I've chosen a good path to follow; one step at a time. It means I feel the difference each time I sit into the car after something has been done. Others jump straight into the deep end, but its all personal opinions.... there shouldn't be a right or a wrong here.

Have you spent any significant money on handling, tyres and everything else though?

A few years ago it was all about the HP.. but like maccattack, building a car to rip through corners, tackle the track, and have power available across the board is more fun.. and most of all, have trust that you can control every ounce of it.

Easy tiger, I have a plan in mind which baisically runs handling first, power seccond. I didnt mean to preach at anybody, im sorry if it sounded that way, believe me - my girlfriend is currently in India studying buddhist philosophy, these guys spend 6-8 hours a day meditating, then prancing around preeching how great it is to be serene - these cats have done brain scans which show a that the part of the brain which controlls happiness is way overactive - I can tell you why, and it aint because of any buddhist priciples, its because for 6-8 hours a day they dont have to put up with ar$eholes like the rest of us :P Now , you all know my chosen path to modify my car, but it seems that some guys choose chase the dyno sheet like the cars in magazines, I merely want to understand why they do it? Is it the thrill of the hunt (like satanic) the dyno day glory? its just in Tassie we dont have the same car culture as you guys have up in the sunny end of things, I just want to gain an insight into the emotion - not to debate the idea that you cant have tourque + power if you do things a cretain way :) thats all

HOT4's, fast n the furious and the people that own cars as penis extensions (the-look-at-me idiots) all want a figure or power to be better than the next guy.

It's just keeping up with the jones' syndrome.

I think that's true for about 90% of people who think of peak figure as what they want out of the car.

The remaining 10% are those who say for example, compete and they've set the peak figure as as an aim. Likewise are people who just want to get to a round number.

For example I've always wanted to crack 200 because it's a round number - these days it doesn't matter to me anymore the car is fast enough and that's what counts.. the figure is, afterall quite arbitrary (I've had from 180-198rwkw peak on different dynos).. the real enjoyment is the delivery and response. I drive my car for me not for the idiots who yell out how much kw is it, how many psi its running or does it smoke it up.

I've chased reasonable numbers for dyno comps before.

I find it interesting to see how much you can get out of a said package, only when its @ its limit do you know what you need to change next to go further.

Its similar to PB i guess in anything you set out to better your previous

Running up 369rwkw for me put a smile on my dial as the car was plagued for problems because of crap workmanship and stuff for many years.

It sure as hell didnt run that tune daily, and getting to the 369rwkw found what was probably the very upper limit of the setup.

I setout to achieve it with stock rb25 head, stock RB25 coils/igniton etc etc

So many people said it wouldnt happen. That for me was all i needed to know.

I did it and proved what i always thought was possible.

Without people pushing limits people dont know what they are and often waste money on things you might not really need etc etc. So i can talk from expirience

Pauls 32GTR running 10.3's with 2530's is a good example. As is the bigger boys who are into the 9's/8's with thier GTR's.

Then there are the guys doing insane times around the circuits, RPM GTR as an example

Its all about pushing it to the limit and then adding on from there.

I had just as much enjoyment running a 12.1sec pass (albeit sideways) as the guys running 10's, 9's, 8's whatever, as thats all i can reasonably afford, and thats all i wanted.

Medium Dave my reson 4 modding was to have a nice car

as stock it is a r33 wine red auto with gtr kit stock no wing with a sun roof

i wanted good mods so first was

3' polished stainless steel out of turbo hiflow cat with resonator sounds nice not ricey

next was hybrid fmic with turbo smart plumb back

e boost 2

next will be emanagement or safc ,cai and polished pipes under th bonnet

then i ither do a manual conv or get a shift kit and gear box strenghten

then a nice set of wheels

power pushing is more to boost 2 people who useually no nothen or so a v8 boy can sa his is 456rwhp but heavy slug to drive

mine is a cruzer tho and i like qulity not quantity in my mods

Although I coceed my question was a little confusing at first it was all in the last line of my original post (read it again) Why does everyone have to get so defensive?, cant we all jus' get allong?
