Whats up well its my first post,so might as well start with a question. I was jus wondering what type of gear I should get for having a go at painting my old VN.I know the basic stuff I need but I wanna know if there were a big difference in the different spray guns, compressors out there.

Im a beginner so I dont really need the professional top of the range stuff, jus something which will do a competent job. A rough price range would be handy as well.

Cheers.

I resprayed my dad's car a few years back, all I used was a decent sized compressor, nothing over the top, medium sized spray gun that was all that was available at the time anyway. Came out pretty good, just don't spray it on a wet day, after 10am and b4 5pm, thats the best time says my dad. Keep us updated.

If your a beginner Acrylic is definatly the easiest option. Most acrylics are cheap and you can paint loads on, make mistakes and the buff it flat.

If your pretty handy with a gun 2pack paints look about a million times better and last years longer.

I'd have to say painting in the morning is better than the afternoon, if your going to follow lingeringsoul's advice, start closer to 10am than 5pm.

Use a gravity fed (pot on top) gun with around a 1.8mm tip. You can pick up one of these for around $100 from supercheap or repco. Renting a decent compressor is probably your best bet, or better still find a mate with one. Rather than buying an undersized one.

And most importantly the key to any good spray job is in the preperation.

Good luck.

and watch out for freaking BUGS! they stick to the paint while its drying, and even dust or whatever that flys around.

make sure you use a decent tape when cover part of panels and stuff, so the paint doesnt run through the sticky tape.

youll also need news paper!

good luck.

I wouldnt use 2 pack paint in the open air , you need a spray booth to get a good resault and you need a very good mask , its deadly stuff.

You can use acrylic in the open air without to many problems as long as its not windy where you are going to do it .

If you never done it before, dont do it just try painting one panel first so you get some practice . As you are a beginer thin your paint heaps and spray it as wet as possible without getting any runs .

Dont forget that paint wont cover any imperfections on the panels ar sandmarks . Use primer filler to fill any sandmarks and rub it with 600 .

Any dood conditionpaint on the car just rub with 600 , only enough to take the shine off , you dont need to prime .

If you are painthing metalic top up with at least 3 coats of clear .

The next day cut back with 1200 then buff for a mirror shine that will last for a long time but of course not as long as 2 pack .

Rather than tape remove as much stuff as you can , like door handles , lights etc and dont paint mirrors and door frames unless they are in need .

As a minimum you will need a 8 cfm compressor and because you are a begginer use a small gun ( one that throws out very little paint ) . When you get more practice you can use a bigger gun so you can do the job quicker .

And never paint in the open ( even inside ) if there is moisture in the air , like cloudy weather or high humidity, pick a nice sunny day , not to hot or to cold ( not bellow 20 or above 30 degrees ).

    • What could be causing my clutch problem besides a bad master or slave then? Both those parts are new
    • Just came across this, but in QLD I start leave again in 2 weeks, if it is still available I might drive up and check it out Unless, @MBS206 do you live near here????, if so I could hit you up with a finders fee https://www.gumtree.com.au/s-ad/hope-island/auto-body-parts/nc-mx5-factory-hard-top/1328976391
    • My hold point for future mods is that I want a OEM detachable hard top first, but, finding one is a pain, MX5 Mania are looking for one for me, but, as hens teeth are more common, finding one in Australia is proving problematic  I can get a OEM one from overseas, hell, you can still get new ones in 'Merica, but, shipping is a absolute killer and I cannot justify the cost, or the risk of it being damaged during transport As for the aftermarket hardtops, whilst they do the job of being a hard top, and are fine for a track car, they don't seal well (read: leak like a sieve in the rain), and you need a plastic/poly rear window, plus they are a bolt in option only and not made to be easily removed I liked how the hard top on my NB could be fitted, and removed, by myself, in less than 5 minutes I know it sounds bad, but I'm waiting for someone to write off a car with one so I can swoop in on their pain, it will go to a good home though, so my guilt of this is tempered
    • I’ve got one on mine and it’s fine,
    • No, you don't want to plug the vacuum line, as that will turn that side of the booster into an air spring and probably make it feel worse. I'm not saying that the GTR master itself doesn't need a booster. I haven't paid attention to the GTR one to know what size it is cf the non-GTR ones. But when you think about it - they have to do the same job, which is to move a little slave piston a few mm to do what it is supposed to do, and that final action is the same on all the cars. So, it is very unlikely that the GTR MC is any different than the others, because it has the same pedal stroke and the same output requirement. The booster just makes it feel easier. I'd suggest you probably have an actual hydraulic problem. It's totally common on these old shitboxes.
