My Jim Berry clutch is for sale. EASILY holding 265kW and still going strong. What no-one's mentioned is how cheap it is to have Jim rebuild them back to BRAND NEW SPEC.

$450 tops!

I want $550 ono for mine. Wont last long.

33 gtst.

Wierd thought i posted this before but here it is again.

Direct Clutches in Albion Brisbane are one of australias premier places for clutches. Some of you might not remember the judge and his high hp cars, well he used direct exclusively.

And i dare say his cars where making more power and torque than 99% of users on here.

You will not be dissapointed :P

im quite interested in the amount of pressure (power) some of these clutches can hold up to.

im looking at putting out around 350kws atw and have been told ill need a tilton twin plate with custom flywheel. is this necessary??

You should call Jim. But he said mine should hold about 800hp at the fly fairly easy, its his superdooper single plate one. If you do all the conversions you still have head room. But just call Jim better to get it from the horses mouth.

Jim usually rates HP on circuit applications so if you put slicks on the rears, rev it to 7000rpm & then dump it on a well-prepped track like Willowbank like I did, well....tore my carbonic down to the rivets. Ended up going to a NPC twin plate and it is bulletproof + only $200 to rebuild as opposed to $700 for a single plate.

Mine is ready to pick up from Jim now and i distinctly remember him asking me what i will be using it for even went down to percentages. EG:80% street, 15% circuit, 5% drag. So if you specify what you want to do with it he will give you what is necessary to do the job.

A mate with a 240awkw gtr got a heavy duty clutch (told it was good for 300awkw) off NPC and his first outing at the drags saw pretty aweful clutch slip.

I got jim's full monty, and upon asking him what it'll hold in my 26/30, he said it should see 1000+hp

Got a single plate Exedy sports tuff ceramic from western clutches was told itll hold 500-550 hp

Not happy at all done about 2000km and on the first launch it flared to 8000rpm all of 1st and 2nd gears had to back it off 2 times to make it grab in 2nd. In gears in dosnt flare.

I dont recomend to anyone this Shit clutch.Unless you feel like wasting $900 + the labour fees.

i live in NZ and shipping something the weight of a clutch probably wouldnt be worthwhile so i was just interested theoretically as various "experts" have such differing opinions.

I would ring Jim however the chance of me buying something off him is small and i dont want to waste his time.

There are second hand clutches galore around at the moment. If i was to buy a nismo twin plate how much approximately is the rebuild costs on something like that.

Cheers

Im thinking of gettin a clutch of jim.. however could someone please tell me how much labour would cost for installing this clutch?? cauz im in vic so i need to get it installed somewere else...

I've been quoted $250 labour to install a clutch into a GTR. Previously paid $300 for a GTSt (about 5 yrs ago). Cost of machining flywheel would be extra.

Both workshops in Melbourne.

Ive had a Jim Berry "race clutch" in my 33 for the last 18 months and it has never slipped and was running 300rwkw. I know have closer to 400kw and even a 6500 launch and slicks still didnt slip. They are awesome.

My R34 GTT needs a new clutch... was going to go for a twin plate, but maybe Jim is the better option? I'm in NSW so can he build it all for me, then send it here and I get it installed by someone else? It's for an R34 GTT and I want it to be able to hold about 265rwkw, does anyone have a rough idea on how much it'd cost?

Im in Tassie and i got mine delivered with a standard flywheel for less than $1300 but that was a while ago. I did have a Nismo twin plate and that was hard to press in when this clutch from jim is nice and easy but grabs hard.

how much was that?. i am awaiting a call from him tomorrow. mine made just over 700hp at engine and am wondering whether a single will do

cheers

Put me down as another happy customer of Jims, also got the full monty from him, have had it in the car 6 months now and haven't had any problems at all...

and as stated before alow at least an hour out of your day for the phonecall.. Jim loves a good chat

My Jim Berry clutch was so good it was as easy to drive in my 320kw gtr as my budget exedy was in my 185kw r33 gtst.

Just don't forget when ur getting a new clutch to spend the extra $500 and get a new flywheel with it

    • Yuck. But it's kinda the same principle, moving timing around to make car run bad but sound good.... I went for a more spirited tuning drive to iron out a few things. Car no longer stalls, and it loved to dip RPM low when you clutch in. After tuning this (and the 4-5 tables that HPTuners/LS1 OEM ECU wants for idle air correction) it's now behaving somewhat normal. All expected because there's a new TB, new Intake manifold and that new TB which is 102mm vs 78... has an entirely different IAC passage which is smaller because ????? Unfortunately at this point I went to make further fine tuning changes to avoid it flaring up, you know... _tuning_ the HPTuners dongle died. Well to be more accurate - The USB cable died in a fashion that anyone who has ever charged a phone will recognize. After the app demanding I resync it 50 or so times (which all 'succeeded' but all failed) the device does not want to sync and I've logged a ticket with support to see if it's fixable. US Support said it was a 'storage issue' but after removing the SD card inside it and formatting it/fixing it the issue does persist. Unfortunately usually the fix is "Turn in your old dongle and pay $700 for the upgraded one" it's cheaper because I get some free licence credits I unfortunately don't need. However I'm 10 minutes down the road from HP Tuners AUS/VCM so at least I won't need to post it, and logged a new ticket for support over here. Definitely drives different. My SOTP dyno believes it's probably making 310-320kw instead of the 280 before.  It scrambles for traction a little now whereas it previously different. It drives like a bigger cam car up top even though the cam is smaller, likely due to the cam not being advanced 6 degrees. The timing is deliberately low and the fuel is very rich so who knows if this will improve on the dyno. It may, imperceptably. Also funny is removing the pineapples definitely makes the car squat more and axle tramp less. So this behavior of having more top end, squatting more, and scrabbling for traction more makes me think = more power. But I could have just been sitting on the threshold of that kind of behavior before. Time will tell if my butt dyno is calibrated right. I need the exhaust leaks fixed before dyno tune for obvious AFR related reasons - I repositioned the pipes but I'm not confident it's fully sealed even if it is better. At least the car does drive around while I cannot tweak/tune it for now. And I have aircon again. medium success!
    • Don't use that manifold. Please don't use that manifold. Sunk cost fallacy is not worth the later pain. None of these will be relevant to the change that will come from the different turbo and manifold. As in, the effect of the exhaust will be nil, regardless of what else is changed. And all the cam and fuel system stuff is not changing either way, so has no effect. The turbo and manifold (and to a small extent the wastegate)....big change.
    • Just wanted to say thank you for your input   my man (lead mechanic by trade) and I have done a heap of work as you can imagine just to make the hot side work with the dump pipe, stupid massive intake on turbo, trying to get the waste gate on was not fun.  I’m kinda getting to the point where I don’t know if I try and make this work and not throw all this cash and time away or do I scrap the lot and start again? the Apexi I’ve got was tuned for a few slight differences:   Tomei pon cams (mine are stock neo) Turbo smart 38mm external waste gate (mines 45mm replumbed) with stainless screamer pipe  3inch turbo back exhaust with high flow cat Sard 800cc top feed injectors Sard adjustable fuel pressure reg
    • Out here E90s are the cheapest way into a sporty-ish car because everyone knows just how expensive the repairs can get. 8-10k USD for an automatic 335i.
    • Noted. Have noticed BMW are more 'high maintenance' for sure. They've attracted my attention as I think the used car prices seem reasonable vs other options, and the extra quality overall vs a commodore / camry / corolla or similar of the same vintage is appealing, especially the interior, and they are more on the sporty side whereas the others mentioned can be more cruising or economical A-to-B only.
