Ultimate Lame Experience - need my airbox engineered

Recommended Posts

I was defected in Wollongong for a open filter.

So I got a fiberglass box + a Apex'i cone filter.

Finished: http://www.nitroware.net/~tony/uas_box.jpg

Some of the places I went to called the RTA to confirm that they could sign off on a fixed 'defect'.

Apparently RTA told them I would need to go back to the original airbox or get my new pod + box engineered.

What a load of bullshit.

So I found someone who would do a dodgy and sign off on the new box.

I thought this would be relatively easy to fix but nothing is easy with the RTA and the cops.

It's sad isn't it....

Once I finish my car, I'm tempted to get the whole lot engineered. When I say whole lot, it'll only be the suspension, exhaust, pod and box, bleed and tint.

Just so I can show them the certificate and not worry about defects...

man how did you get the box to fit over the HKS ?

I've got the same filter with the same box and I literally cannot fit the pod filter inside the box coz it sits up too high.

Not only that but right where the tubing for the air filter is sposed to go thru the box it has a square and last i checked a square wont fit thru a circle.

Where you from maybe you could help me ?

Quieter.

Response is smoother with the cold air.

Also the Apex'i is a much better filter than the HKS which lets dirt in big time. It's better for turbo longevity to get rid of that HKS.

PM me Ben, I'll can tell you were to get it fitted cheap and good. They even sold me the Apex'i filter for a damn good price. And it's non-oil too.

as for getting an engineers certificate and jamming it in the cops faces, doesnt quite work like that as they can claim something has been changed after the date it was engineered, and if the RTA is present, the engineer certificates are about as useful as all those dockets jammed in your ashtray. But the situations where its just constable care and yourself, it more than likely does get you out of it and is probobly still worth it

Tell the cop to prove it if its a "Loud Exhaust"

What is loud ???

To me about 80dB is loud but to you 110dB might be loud ! How is he to know ?

Not only that but when they do use the dB probe-thingy to test your exhaust dB get out of the car and watch them do it.

I forget the exact measurements but they must be X cm away from the car and Xº to the right of the exhaust (think its 45º) and then rev your engine to 3,000rpm in neutral.

If you let the cops walk all over you they will.

benm,,,thats not quite right,,,the Police-Officer "By Law"only has to suspect that your exhaust is to loud or for that matter anything else on your car is in "His Opinion" illegal. He doesn't have to meter anything,,,he just sends you off to the EPA/RTA and they decide.

hahah me and my mate the funniest experience with cops defecting.

We got a call from a mate who said he was getting defected so we went down where they had a full-on defect party happening and we drove in in a STOCK AS mid 80's model Celica. The copper comes over and goes to my mate, "is this your sprinter???" he's like, "yeh" so he goes, "is that an aftermarket exhaust???", and my mate goes, "nah it's stock". Then the copper asked him to start the car and then comes out with, "can you rev it a bit mate I can't hear it". I was like WTF???? BAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA

Are you sure... the engineers certificate lists modifications, so will state " blah, blah, blah" and be signed and dated. You need one to get the car past the pits, so should be good for a roadside inspection

Problem is, even though im a qualified mech eng, and will soon have memebership to IE Aust, you need RTA approval to gain a licence to "engineer" cars . Membership to bodies like SAE helps with gaining the RTA accreditation.

There are quite a few guys around who can engineer cars, perhaps if a group of import owners can get together and approach one, say 20 cars, that 3-4 days work for the guy and may give a decent $$$$ discount:D

A friend of mine got defected for a loud exhuast, even though the car was fully engineered. Friend tried to explain he had an engineers cert but the cop just said 'I don't care'.

I should be a qualified mech eng in 2 years, how long does it take to get a license from the RTA to engineer cars?
