I think Stan's "salary ranges" are a bit overzealous.. reality is - most people leaving school will get $12 -$14/hr.. maybe more.. but I doubt much more..

Most uni graduates who I finished with were looking for jobs with $40k max.. most didn't get that.. only people who got graduate positions came close to $50k and most of those are working for large law firms and the such working a hell of a lot of hours..

Not sure about your research stan but reality says people will go for anything if that's what they can get..

Gimme a break mate, I'm studying at uni and working at franklins parttime. I get $18.37 an hour. There is no way that i'd work in an office doing shitty work for 12-14 an hour when I do the same shitty work for frankies at $18.37 an hour.

My mate owns a pub, heres a cruisy job for school leavers to give you an idea of what they can get

Picking up glasses in a pub - 18 p/h mon to fri

20 odd p/h sat

25 odd p/h sun

Easy money, always jobs going

and i'm sure working there will get you a long way into a corporate career.. my guess is you are on casual? is that what you want to do for the rest of your career.. in the end alot of people sacrafice pay for an oppurtunity to break into something like enjoy/want to do..

alot of people when working out there hourly rate would be on less than you are.. the fact is though that they work 35+ hours weeks and earn more than you..

good luck when you finish uni.. hope you get a job where they pay you more than 40k+ in an industry you like.. becuase 9 out of 10 people won't..

exactly when i was 18 i used to do demolition work. I used to take home in my hand around $1500 a week. that was pretty good going for someone of my age. but it was f**king hard work, and not all that regular. ie you have a few weeks work, then maybe nothing for a while. other people working in a job in an office (with some future of promotion) were taking home about $500-$600 a week after tax. but they werent absolutely farked at the end of every day, and had the potential to make more money in the future.

Yes, I am on casual, but I was just demonstrating that 12-14 an hour is really low. I've been working 32-35 hours a week during the holidays and bringing in 5-600 a week. Not bad for a week of uneducated/unqualified work.

I do however understand what you're saying about sacrificing pay to break into a person's desired work area. I'm currently studying law at uni atm and this would be one of those such areas. They know that students like me would kill to break into the law force and they take advantage of this and pay low wages.

However, I must also say that I disagree with you regarding 12-14 an hour for being a secretary/office bitch. What exactly woudl be the point of doing this? once again, just like working at frnaklins, this is a dead end job. It won't let you walk up the corporate ladder. So why be a secretary/office s**t for that when I can just work at fraknlins on casual and work whenever I like?

Love it, because the secretary & office boy have just a bought the condoms you just stacked that evening.

I'd disagree that it's dead ended.

I didn't go to uni, finished year 12 and went out and got a shit kicker job like that at an insurance company. After 6 years in the industry i clawed my way fairly high into a cushy job. I started on a measly $17K p/a and now earn 3 times that figure easily.

finally had enough and moved to another industry, but took alot of skills with me, so when I ended up in the automotive indusrty importing bikes for Harley, I got a decent amount of money and a job I like. I was even willing to take a pay cut for it, but they offered me more than what I ws previously on. go figure.... and it all starte with a crappy shit kicker job.

besides what looks better on the resume.... office job or franklins?

haha, so very true.

don't you get a day off every fortnight?

yes most public service agreements are for a 9 day fortnight.

and goldzilla, how old are you though? if you are over 23, and have been working a few years and know what you'r doing it is not unreasonable to expect 50 or 60 plus. if you are really good ad another 10 to that.

Yer go a goverment Job im in the NSW Railway and in my 2nd year i think i sould make 60k+ for doing next to nothing and some days nothing its great. oh and i cant even spell hahahah. Bad thing is shift work

Brad

edit; we work a 19 day month(28days) which works out 10 days one fortnight and 9 the nexted

where is this pub you speak of?

Well I've done plenty of well paid but ultimately dead end jobs but ended up being an office junior at 25. Two years later a promotion doubled my pay overnight and it has since gone up by that much again.

Anyway, I've found my junior today. Going to offer her the job tomorrow and discuss pay then. She was most happy to be looking at the opportunity to get out of the local IGA supermarket. Very smart girl. I hope it works out.

See, theres the problem. Redfern.

When i say theres always jobs going, not at this particular pub, i mean pubs in general, or RSL's, or clubs
