I was driving down near Bondi (night time), CD player started skipping, started fiddling with it while looking up and down at the same time. Saw the stop sign at the last minute, looked both ways and put the breaks on to slow myself down... yet still going through it at around 30.. :P

And it just so happened that there was a cop car coming from the left about 50 metres away... 6 points ( australia day long weekend )

I feel sick :(

Anyone know what the length of the suspension will be like for a Red P plater.. ?

^^

Just found out it's a 3 month suspension. That is alot better than I had initially been predicting. Although, the cop said double demerit points for AUs day weekend.. for a stop sign... yet...

On th RTA website it says

Double demerit points

Double demerit points apply for speeding, seatbelt and motorcycle helmet offences during all holiday periods such as long weekends, Christmas, New Year and Easter. For offences committed before 1 July 2005, other demerit point offences also attract one extra point.

well considering you could have been dead if someone had T boned you, it ain't too bad.

What they mean from that blurb is that if you get done for anything else, you get an extra point for that.

So for example... negligent/reckless driving 1 point... plus 1, failing to stop at a stop sign 1 point... plus 1 etc. if you get caught speeding, then its whatever demerit, times two.

well if the offence normally incurs 3 points, now it will mean 4 points, its sort of irrelevant as you were only allowed one more, so it will mean a 3 month suspension.

on another point, as i understand it when you have your licence valid again it will already have the points on it from before, so once again you will only have one point left to use, until you get onto your green p's.

bad luck mate... i guess now you will be more careful around there, im always around bondi late at night if i see a r33 with red p's coming upto an intersection ill be prepared to dodge u :(:D i am forever avoiding accidents around that area already :P

Werd. Consider yourself lucky........ Not unlucky.

- if negligent/reckless driving normally attracts 3 demerit points, it instead attracts 4 demerit points.

- if evading police normally attracts 9 demerit points, it instead attracts 10 demerit points.

- if failing to stop at a stop sign normally attracts 3 demerit points, it instead attracts 4 demerit points.

Since you only have 1 point left, it's all moot anyway. You're going to be hit with an automatic suspension 3 months :D

Actually I think this is incorrect. Licence suspension automatically takes you back up to full points. Extra demerit points are NOT carried over to your licence when you return from a suspension (Unless of course you opt for a good behaviour bond, in which you usually have 1 or 0 points for a predetermined period of time).

So therefore if you were done for speeding, running a stop sign and running a red light all at once, then the 14 points or whatever you just accumulated wouldnt actually be applied to your licence because you have simply exceeded your maximum, so therefore licence suspension is applied. You would then return with your full 4 points after your suspension period.

This was the case at the end of 2004 for me... So I'm not too sure about now as I think that a lot of rules have changed.

Call the RTA and ask them! Thats the only way to know for sure. Let us know if what I said is wrong :P

Primordial, you might be right, but i think the offence you commited that pushed you over the limit plus the next ones would be removed when you get off the suspension. i thought you only get rid of the points if you have some, then have your licence cancelled and get it back.

anyway ring them up and explain it to us, ignuz!

Not much you can do unfortunately, just one of those things. Always be careful with stop signs. Waverley council love their speed humps and stop signs, you've gotta pay lots of attention when driving around Bondi etc. Just be thankful you didn't have an accident or run anyone over. It's always tempting to fiddle with your stereo whilst driving but you've just got to tell yourself to wait until the next red light or stop, or even pull over before diverting your attention for anything that requires you to look down away from the road. I've had a couple of scares myself doing this, thankfully my new car has steering wheel controls and a stacker so I rarely have to look at my stereo when driving now.

Just be more careful in future, fines are one thing but running over somebody or having a serious accident 'cause you missed a stop sign or a red light is another thing.

I was a passenger in a car that got t-boned by a P-plater who went through a stop sign when I was down in Victoria last week. The stupid girl was too busy playing with her mobile phone to bother stopping at the stop sign while crossing a highway. End result is that my g/f's parents car got written off and we were very lucky not to be seriously hurt.

Stop signs are there for a reason mate.

I think you're getting off lucky with a 3 month suspension...
