Maybe an easier option would be a list/thread of tools that people are happy to lend out whether other users rent it from that person or leave a deposit or something.

Much cheaper than actually buying all the gear and hence having to pay it off.

if there is some keen SAU mechanics im sure they would make a killing

doing performance mods/bolt ons for other SAU'ers.

surely it would be cheaper then seeing a mechanic that has nothing to do with skylines nor own 1.

the idea is from Satanic threads about doing brake calipers.

i can do dump pipes and cats:P ive also changed my turbo myself

but not yet confident to do it on someone elses car.

no tools to be lossed or stored.

if your able, just post where your at and what you can do for fellow Liners and maybe post a fee.

4 example, ill be doing a fuel pump change soon.but not confident to tackle it by myself, would rather someone there who has done it before.

It's a good idea, but that's only in a perfect world. Unfortunately, there is the issue of legal liability. e.g. if someone helps you with that fuel pump and the car leaks fuel and blows up, you'll then try and get that guy to pay it. or if the pump leaks and blows up another guy's car, he'll come after him.

Unfortunately, we don't have insurance.

I'm not yet convinced it would work but perhaps we should draw up a list of appropriate tools and then consider their pros and cons in relation to them being in a library.

Great idea, I've not yet gone that far as I was interested in whether guys were keen in the first place. There seems to be a few guys interested and there are possibly others that didn't post. Off the top of my head, a $500 pool from donations would be around the ball park. And we don't necessarily have to buy new tools either - eBay, etc.?

I can start a list by editing the first post. Establish setup costs and ongoings and suss it out from there.

I can't see why everybody wouldn't have their own jack and stands as they are so cheap these days.  Same with a socket set although if you are donating that changes things.

I agree with regard to common tools. If it were to go ahead, as I mentioned in the first post, it'd be with rare, one-use only tools. I'm happy to carry out a cambelt change but I'm stuck for finding a torque wrench that will tighten to over 400ftlbs or whatever the insane torque is on that bolt. I would rather have used a steering wheel puller the other week instead of doing it by hand. Other tools like a harmonic balancer puller (or whatever it's called, never used one) or a rattle gun with a few rattle sockets and things like that. I agree that a library of screwdrivers and hammers is a waste of time and effort.

An engine hoist might be alright although I know of a member who bought one recently and is hoping to rent it out for not too much to other members.  Maybe a decent air compressor and bits would be good but again the "it's broken" "it was fine when I gave it back" issue might raise it's head.

A hoist and stand would be great, available on a long-term(ish) loan. Decent compressors are over $500 but a cheapie that will run an air-ratchet and pump your tyres and run a small rattle gun would be great. It is fairly straightforward to establish a check/balance to ensure returned tools are in working order. Even just a test on return.

The club doesn't really have money to invest in this at the moment so the whole scheme would have to be cost neutral.  Could we really afford to risk having to replace a $500 broken spray gun or something?

If a tool library is established via club member donations and then spears in due to DIY mechanic negligence, then the club hasn't lost financially.

Does the club file a company tax return? I don't know much about the operation of clubs/charity groups/etc. and I'm not sure how they are taxed. If you are filing a return then the tools are deductable however then you're legally obliged to declare the income from renting the tools out.

Thanks very much for your input, I was just about to PM you asking you to have a read through the thread. Ultimately, I'd need some direction (yes/no) from NSW Execs before going any further as trying to resolve things by consensus would be difficult (as no one member may speak for the club).

Cheers Adam

Same as Jon(?)/silver suggested. I know what you mean dude. It might be a goer but I'd just worry more about loaning my own tools rather than knowing someone else is borrowing club tools.

With regard to paying it off, my plan was to call for donations of $20 (more if you can show your love/gratitude for SAU assistance) and use those funds to purchase equipment. $20 is half of dinner out and if you could somehow place a dollar figure on how much has been saved from your own pocket just by using the search button or starting a thread, suddenly $20 or $50 doesn't seem so much anymore. It's not even a full tank of motor juice. :P

$20 now, then $5 for a week's rental on a monster torque wrench and you're way ahead. $3 to borrow a breaker bar for the week? Anyway, you know what I mean, I'm sorry if I laboured the point.

What about a tool loan thread....similar to the for sale thread....if someone is low gutted enough to not return (insert tool name here) they are similarly dealt with as a bad trader. Also having a record of the transaction/contract on here is as good as a legal document (correct me if im wrong Adam) in the same way e-mails are admissable. Make it a sticky with the first post a list of who's got what and their location. I vote Mark to be the moderator of such thread/section. Having it in the NSW members only section also gives a bit of added security as persons full particulars are known to NSW exec.

Just an idea to make it possibly happen, as the idea in principle is a great one.

actually i think pauls idea is a good one. nice and simple. rather than people posting up what they have, people post up: "i need a 6 foot breaker bar" then if you have said bar, and can lend it, you can say, i have one, come get it.

I agree, would achieve the aim with a lot less heartache. If we could bring up both ideas at the next meeting that'd be great.

And if you 'forget' to return my timing light I'll loan my breaker bar to your forehead :( hehe

Seriously though, a loan thread would prob do the trick. Additionally, that would allow all members to borrow tools, rather than just the Sydney guys. There are plenty of guys in the Newcastle/Hunter region.

On the issue of protecting your tools whilst on loan, perhaps we could draft quasi-contract with names/member numbers/agreement that the tool is in working order/etc. and go from there. For it to be a legally binding contract you would actually have to pay the person loaning the tool, although payment of $1 would be sufficient.

Have to bail, love to talk about the idea more though.

I think it's a great idea,,,but can't see it getting off the ground. My long departed Old-Man taught me 3 valueable leasons in Life

1/ Never lend your Wife

2/ Never lend your Lawn Mower

and most importantly

3/ Never lend your tools

They all come back rooted.

Neil.

Hi guys

Im Heath from Canberra, just moving to Sydney on the 12th so ill be a NSW'er from then on. Just reading a few of the ideas going and they sound great. I personally would like to offer an extra set of hands where they can be used....so perhaps (i think it was suggested earlier) if a group is doing some work on a line put a post up (or send PM's)cos i'd love to help out where i can so i can pick up a few tips and then transfer them to my line down the line. I have lots of spare time (very rare as an engineering student) and instead of being a bum i want to learn some basic mod stuff...

E.g. I am waiting to hear back from greenline to order FMIC, Eboost, Fuel pump, Fuel pressure reg, and from BOSimports -dump and magic cat..all pretty easy stuff to install but i'd like to help someone that knows what they are doing so then i am confident to do mine myself...

Well the offer is there, hopefullly someone takes me up on the offer to keep me from going out of my mind with boredom!!

Hi Heath

I have just changed exhaust on my R32. I thought everything went smoothly but I'll add that if the guy at the Auto One/Autobarn/etc. says you don't need gasket sealant with metal gaskets, just go right ahead and ignore that piece of advice... grrrr

Where are you moving to? Where in Sydney I mean. :)

lmao mine sounded like an old carby 5L without the gasket goo on the turbo to exh. manifold.

im in the process of taking my dump/front pipe off as i forgot to put the gasket goo.

you could lend me a hand if you like Heath.

just depends how far away you are.

ill be doing this tomorrow after work say 5pm,at work(near HITMAN at penrith)

give me a buzz if your keen [0410531540 aaron]

P.S on average what does AUTOBARN and places like that charge to fit up an exhaust on a skyline? just a rough price.

Would be happy to give you a hand, i dont move in to my apartment until the 12th of Feb, getting close now..im enjoying Cairns at the moment though. I have an apartment lined up in Alexandria (hope its an ok suburb to live in as i know NOTHING about Sydney) I dont have a garage to work in but more than happy to go to someone elses to do some work for them, provided its not going to take me over an hour to get there i spose!!

Cheers

haha, it takes at least an hour to get anywhere in sydney.

I don't know why you need gasket goo on any part of your exhaust unless it doesn't fit properly. I have taken mine off and put it back on numerous times with no goop required.

I'm sure there will be people around to help you Trooper. Post a thread.

The flanges on the front pipes aren't a very good match for the stock dump pipes ;) I'm going to see if I can leave the cat section bolted and just unbolt/lower/goop/refit the front pipes... just sitting here waiting for the exhaust to cool down. :)

Hey! More talk about a tool library!

I vote Beer Baron :)

Glad to hear it is sorted by the goop. I'm looking forward to not driving in shame, afraid to put my foot down. :)
