Turbo Rebuild Time

ive had a big bastard on my car for too long. its a TA34 (T04E) Garrett with 1.06 exhaust housing which sees boost come at around 4500-5000rpm which makes good top end but very little streetable power

i want to rebuild the turbo using the same compressor setup but smaller exhaust size which will bring boost down to around 3000rpm. im thinking a .63-.68 housing. but also want to make decent power. currently the car makes 270rwhp @ 14psi (RB20) and i want to have at least 250 by the time the operation is complete. other factors are dont really want to have to contract a welder or change oil/water lines/intake pipes etc. the turbo currently sits on an HKS manifold with an external w/gate

what do you reckon i should do? just change the exhaust housing, is this a good/bad idea? or is there an easier way around?

thanks

adam

Adam,

If you want my opinion then I would say that you should take your car to Grant at Per4manz. He will be able to properly advise you on sizing of housings etc, and provide a much more useable turbo.

Turbo sizing is a real art, guessing will lead to a poorly performing turbo.

but they charge more than a student can afford.

thats why im gunah take it off myself and take it into united. say it came off an RB20 and see what he does. itd just like a starting point first though, i dont want to walk in there oblivious of roughly what im looking for

Whos taking the turbo off? :D

As far as i know a .63 will do the job depending on your wheels sizing.

Unfortunately Postwhorepaul u need to take the turbo to someone who is willing to make what he can from the current setup, performance shops just want the dollars and they usually get people in who want to pay the dollars as well.

Adam already owes me :)

this is from tristan who owns the sw20 mr2 featured the *fear* rollaboyz website.

*snip*

Im not very familiar with the TA series.. aside from

knowing the fact that the big ones are REALLY big :D

basic principal though... would suggest that the

smaller housing would definately be the go. 1.06 A/R

on a turbo that size... with only a 2 litre engine...

I can see why its laggy! hehe. like I said.. I dont

know much about that turbo.. but if it is as big as I

think it is, I believe the top end power wont really

suffer much.

this process is the easiest way around.. should

require no modification of

manifold/exhaust/coolant/oil lines... and housings

are usually $200 or less if they are available new.

cheapest torque increase around!

hope that helps.

driftr33,

A t3/t4 setup can comprise of many combinations of compressors and turbines, and most of them will not function very well together. You really need to have seen one perform on the same car and get the exact measurement in order to replicate the performance.

Yours might be very good, so let us know the exact measurements then adam can ask for a turbo with those specs.

u can get the specs but u would have to get them from united , they are very well built they have built mine, shannons, and mackas and the times macka and shannon have pulled show that they go but i have heard a lot of stories about wrongly built t3/t4's i will not mention the comapanys name but the stuffed wassabis(miles) turbo and also mackas... but you also will get a warranty on the turbo from united.... best thing to do is call steve at united and he can advise you of the best thing to do....
