Hi All,

My first post on this forum....... :( .......so be nice!

My car is currently running a HKS FCon Pro V (still tuned for Japanese fuel) which I know there is a HKS dealer in NSW that can reprogram it, but I'm not interested in trucking my car up to NSW for them to do it. I'm wondering if anyone has the software for me to reprogram the unit or someone in Victoria (anywhere near Melbourne) that can tune this unit for me.

I would just replace it, but every man and his dog has a different opinion on what to use - Microtech, Autronic, Motec, Wolf 3D, etc - and everyone has a good argument why not to use some other unit - Motec = price, Microtech = unreliable, Wolf = too basic, etc. I'm also not too eager to rush out and spend mega-bucks, so I would ideally like to keep the HKS unit. All I want to do with the unit is program it first for a peak dyno figure and qtr mile run, then de-tune it for daily driving.

The car is running a MAP sensor (no AFM), ignition amplifier and (as mentoned) tthe HKS unit which is an add-on to the ECU which still runs basic functions like ignition.

Any advice appreciated.

Vincent

Perhpas its worth a call to BD4s in Sydney to see who they recommend in Victoria to tune your car.

If you need to replace it, then depending on budget and how modded your car is, thousands will tell you...the Apexi Power FC takes a lot of beatting.

Talk to a few tuners, get a feel for who you are comfortable to use...as liek you have experienced everyone has their favourites and will claim to be able to do with a product what others cant.

Better yet, look at the cars that have been getting around for a few years with mods and see who tuned their car...if your new to Skylines and the scene, then a good place to start is joining a club liek SAU-Vic. You will heara lot more in person form ppl then you will ever hear over the forum:)

simple answer.. no

bd4's can recommend no one, they are the only people that have the original software to tune the Fcon..

what i was told is no one has really gone to the trouble of trying to obtain the HKS software apart from bd4's due to the strict guidlines HKS set to be able to use it.

ie they dont want any monkey tuner using it

i have heard of people trying to copy the software but who is willing to be the guinue pig with second rate software. ive seen the HKS software and its very detailed.

my opinion.. take the Fcon out, sell it to someone in NSW and go buy yourself a PFC

...My understanding of around the bbq talk with ppl  that should know is there are Sydney shops that BD4s use to lend the software to.If this is no longer the case then pls post up:)

ive just stated whats the go, from the horses mouth.. lol

BD4s actually rents out the tuning software to a few other tuners on occasions (eg CRD), they don't own it themselves.

What about the Power FC D-Jetro? That uses a MAP sensor rather than AFM and it's plug and play.

In any case, probably best to speak to some tuners near you and see what they are most capable with. No point getting a whizbang ECU if no-one can tune it for you.

Hi Vincent, the first job is to get it on the dyno and check it out, Maybe the tune is fine for your purposes and you need to do nothing.

Next, there are a few levels of F-Con, and quite a few different ways to implement them, you really need to find out exactly what level of integration the Fcon has on your car. Once you know that, you can make a more informed decision.

The R32GTR standard ecu is easily chippable, so keeping the Fcon to run the MAP for AFM substitution and then tune the ignition timing and fuel maps via the chipped ECU.

;) cheers :(

i think it shouldnt matter what version of fcon it is as the software can be updated.

also i dont think u can half fcon half standard ecu can you?

the fcon does plug into the standard ecu, but im sure it only uses it for idle and something else i cant remember..

Hi Guys,

Thanks for the replies. Some other info, etc to better inform.......

1. Being a piggy back unit, the FCon apparently works in conjunction with the ECU, so you're right in talking about the level of integration. How intergrated it is I don't know, and again, I'm not too thrilled about sending the car to NSW (BD4s) to find out.

I assume it's pretty well integrated as it's running the ignition amplifier, HKS EVC (Series 1), HKS in-cabin AF ratio adjuster/dial, and the engine is very modified (Nismo crank, forged pistons, mostly Tomei engine bits, Apex RX6 turbos, HKS racing intercooler, 280 degree duration cams, solid lifters, etc)

2. The 2 reasons I need the ECU looked at in terms of settings, is that the car (in Japan) has been capable of over 2Bar boost, but here it is lucky to get to just over 1Bar. Also, it is constantly hunting for idle, so it revs between 800 and 1500rpm constantly when standing still. I've checked all the mechanicals (Idle air control, TPS, etc) to make sure that it was the tuning, and they seem OK. It could be a boost leak, but that shouldn't matter too much if I have a MAP sensor, right??

Anyway, I hope this sheds more light on my probs. Any further advice appreciated. Thanks again guys.

they fcon V is not a piggy back..

and fcon S is a piggy back, the fcon V only plugs in the same way..

im also pretty sure its is possible to run a Fcon V alone

quote from HKS

"The HKS F-CON V Pro is a fully featured standalone engine management system that connects as easily as a "piggy-back" fuel and timing controller"

again i think your best option is to switch ECU's

its really to much hassel and with a car with such nice mods you dont want to take chances...

add up the costs..

tune $600- 1000

and if u decide to send the car to nsw or something needs replacing?

or

PFC $950

and sell the Fcon ontop

Thanks for that. I'm happy to stand corrected as long as I'm learning something.

As the FCon is a stand alone unit, then the next question (as raised before) is what does it interface with the ECU about?

The reason I ask is that if it's sending and receiving data through the ECU, then would it be theoretically possible to alter the signals it gives the ECU? This would allow me to keep the FCon V, and yet tune the car to my liking through altering the data the FCon sends to the ECU by 'playing' with its chip.

Possible? Plausible? Anyone on the forum done it before?
