Hi Everyone!

I've just bought my first skyline. An R32 GTST 4 with RB20det. Its completely stock and un modified except for some dodgy no brand named BOV.

I am already thinking of what to modify on the car. I have a lot of experience in performing one of modifications and some tuning to imports(ecu installation and tuning, turbo swaps, header and intercooling system fabrication etc), but i've never owned one. So when someone says (tune it to 20lb) well I do, but I don't really know the limits of what the car can handle.

So, what are the limits of the GTST4?

I figure i'll have to put a decent clutch into it at some stage so that will probably happen first.

Then I'm thinking plenum, front mount intercooler, manifold and turbo and perhaps 15lb boost? Then perhaps an aftermarket ecu and a set of 550cc injectors.

So how much boost can I crank into this sucker before i start bending rods and smashing pistons?

How much power can I make before I start breaking diffs and gearboxes? I'm thinking i'll use a gradual electronic boost control system to ramp up boost gradulally after shifting gears so its a little more gental on the box.

All thoughs and suggestions are welcome!

it has heaps of useful information to the questions you asked.

its long, but well worth the read. i have found it helpful in modifying my rb20

Make sure its got the good oil! and check it every time before you take it out for a hard drive!!! I got myself my first skyline same as yours, after a month of ownership - I didnt check the oil one time and boom! new engine if you please  learn from my mistakes (sorry just fresh in my mind - currently tracking down a new engine)

Seems to me you have a good plan of attack, dont forget the brakes, you should have some big arse four potters - which pull up very nicely with some good pads, and put it on a dyno if you want to turn up the boost, a mech will be able to tell you the safe limits before detonation :D oh and look into some cold air induction. Have fun :(

The plenum works perfectly well. Some have tried an RB26-style plenum, and had to revert to the original item.

You are limited to about 12psi boost before you dramatically increase the risk of either sending the ceramic turbine wheel down the exhaust pipe, or ingesting it and giving the bores a free hone.

I've upgraded mine with a RB25DET, and the drivetrain is easily handling the 180kW coming out at all 4 wheels.

one of the better oils and the one i use is castrol 10w-60 good if you like driving hard...

otherwise a fully synthetic Motul oil is very good but gets expensive.

just change it regularly and she'll be sweet.
